Dead Man's shoes is one of the hardest films I ever watched, from director Shane Meadows (This is England).
British but not gangster, Never Let Me Go was one of the best films of 2011.
Slevin is not british but it fits your description. Plus features Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley and Bruce WIllis.

Well... yes and no. Yes because his style is close to what i'm looking for (obviously), no because Ritchie tends to go a bit overboard with the sillyness (except in Revolver but that movie has it's own problems).

Gonna give Dead Man's Shoes a watch, Never Let Me Go doesn't really sound like anything i'd want to watch honestly. D: Also it's quite the coincidence, i've watched Lucky Number Slevin just yesterday and yes, it's fairly close to what i'd want to see. Decent movie, too, didn't like the ending though and the twist was a bit too telegraphed.

Dead Man's Shoes is pretty heavy. But it is really british and has (Meadows' signature) beautiful shots of rural england.

Serbian Film desensitized me to the point i can handle anything any movie can throw at me, haha. The synopsis sounds great, although it seems it's more of a revenge flick than a typical gangster flick. Looks promising though, thanks.

As far as I remember layer cake wasn't humorous at all albeit a good movie. But it reminded me of "The 51st State". It doesn't have the same atmosphere as Ritchie's films but I recommend it anyway.

Defintely see The Business. Ful of funnies.

Maybe green street and football factory, its footy violence, but its the same sort of underworld.

Love honour & Obey is a really underated one too. Really quirky with lots of colourful characters.

Also try Ravenous and Outlaw.

A real gem and one you probably never hear of is LOOKING AFTER JOJO with Robert Carlyle. Its an old multipart on youtube and only about 3-4 hours long but its really really good and gritty about drugs/scummers/crime in Scotland)

The director nick love seems to do those types of films too, about dodgy backstreet life in london, so look at what he's done.

I was going to suggest Rise of the Foot Soldier but thought it might be too dark for what you were looking for. Seeing other people have mentioned it now, I have to recommend it as well. In Bruges is good too.

Some solid suggestions already here. But please, dont watch Revolver. Really terrible movie...

I would also recommend "The Long Good Friday" from 1980. Classic brit gangster movie.

Also check out "Croupier" with Clive Owen.

Not really gangster, but along the lines of scum.
Definitely worth a watch if you liked scum. Interesting lead character and impressive acting (Young Tim Roth-Pulp Fiction) for a 21 year old to take a lead role like this.

I would add: The Guard, fits into topic and maintains quake spirit :)
