yeah, I follow that by stream as much as I can. However I'm to bad to participate myself and I usually to busy to attend to a one day cup. Therefore I would love to see a league where you can play 1-2 matches each week or something (and in a division 3/4/5 or other low level division).

As far as I know (as I didn't play q2 duel) there are different spawn systems, but just tell us how the default one and the used on this tournament works (so that's 2) and an example of forcing respawns on q2dm1.

I don't care how much it weighs, as long as everything is included (no need to include the base q2 paks to avoid potential legal issues). Don't want the paks or cfgs separately, want the full game/folder with everything included so I just double click and play, just like you do.

It truly is the most difficult game to configure and it takes a lot of time to have everything done, so a decent already configured version would be nice.
I have tried the ones that careem posted years ago and lots of paks over the years (including the ones Purri posted here last year, somewhere), but I just can't be arsed to spend a whole weekend configuring a videogame. Just share the whole folder.

You've got pretty much ready-to-go Quake downloadable from here : http://q2full.glt.pl/ . Just choose the version that looks the best for you and click "Pobierz" next to screens. You shouldn't need anything else, maybe just r1q2 update when you already unpack it, but I haven't played q2 for ages, so not sure if they didn't introduce something new.

Thing is I already have paks and all that, but I'm not configuring all that again. That's why if Jehar (or Purri because he has a good looking q2 too) just uploads his entire q2 folder it would make like 5 people play again. These days you can upload that (at most 1gb) in a night.

Jehar said something on stream that he can't upload his Q2 because he was asked by the guy from whom he got it not to distribute these models and he also uses some modified linux client for streaming purposes only.

Upload everything besides the client and the models then. It's very easy to remove that from paks and folders.

It's absurd how everything in q2 has always been so reserved. I can get qw, q3, q4 and ql running with a decent config in 2 minutes, but in q2 people simply don't share their files (only game in which it's mandatory to change more than just cfg) and/or it's absurdly complicated and time consuming to get things going.
Only known exceptions are purri (paks and cfg) and clau (paks only) but in both cases it means configuring the game anyway.

Actually I think I have those models. We could trade, lol.
Edit: If I remember when I get home I'll just upload those anyway. I just can't believe people don't want to share what they did for q2. I have some other unreleased stuff as well.

The other solution would be getting purri to upload his whole q2 folder (it only takes one night to upload...), or keep the game dead as it's been the last 7 years or more.

- I never really got r1q2's net configuration. I just want to not get stuck while jumping.
- are players using timers?
- are players using the "walk" bind? I remember it still made step noises
- what are the r1q2 commands to have picmipped walls and regular skins? (I know those are fullbright by changing files)
- can't remember if the "hum" rail noise is only heard by the holder or by both players (like q3). If it's the first one then I could remove that sound (changing file), like I'd do with the ammo hud icons (only grenades is necessary as far as I can remember)

I'll answer what I can here:

Timers are incredibly difficult to enforce in general terms, so it's always been a little ambiguous. However, q2 is one of the games where timers are least useful, since weapons are 30, armors are 20, and mh is qw-like. It ends up being incredibly easy to time internally, so the need for timers is almost nil.

The client I use is aprq2, specifically this build: http://jdolan.dyndns.org/trac/wiki/AprQ2 If you want exactly what I have, there's no way to get around compiling it yourself. This client has de-synced picmip between entities and the world, which is really important for broadcasting when I have to use picmip. The fullbright models are also a cvar included with this build, and not due to any extra files.

Railgun hum is indeed audible by the enemy, though the culling in q2 is always a little weird.

You can workaround fullbright models by changing skin files and by using the modulate trick. No idea how to use picmip without picmipping everything else; maybe a r1q2 command? (not familiar with that client)

Timers are always useful. Knowing when everything spawns to the very moment (not second) is quite an advantage.
Also the actual numbers don't matter since the proper way to time items doesn't have to do with the number ending in a 0 or a 5. It works just like a multiplication table: you remember that X number means Y (so if you take mega at 0:35 means 1:10), without adding or subtracting anything on the fly.

Or actually why not upload the client. I understand those things might had been an issue before q3's release, but picmipped walls and fullbright skins (which were available in q2 like a month after the game's release anyway) are a feature in q3 and prior games.
Probably it's still discussed in q2 whether to force models (male or female) or not.

tl;dr : The client is not readily available because jehar compiled it himself - that particular cvar is in a bit of a grey area, the anticheat would kick him if he wasn't a streamer basically.

There is a timer. The q2 hud system being what it is, it's horribly small. Now, as Jehar said it's easier than in q3 to get a feel for when the items are spawning so you don't have to rely as much on it as you would in q3.

Download the kicker. Spend 3 minutes tweaking your binds, setting picmip and shit in the cfg and you're done.

I don't care about the client. Release everything else in one folder ready to play. I already thought of an easy workaround that should pass through the outdated anticheat.

It isn't that easy and you know it. You could spend months before configuring it properly, because it's not only about cfg (which has more necessary commands to tweak than q3/ql) but also about files. There are literally thousands of options on the interwebz. It isn't q3.
Think of it as configuring QW from the very scratch, if you have experience with that game. What they did is releasing nquake and other packages, that come with several options, tutorials and others btw, and the problem is solved.

It's called the kicker and jehar made it 3 if not 4 years ago. If you don't like it make your own nquake style q2.zip and stop whining.

I know I'm a bit pissed off about this, but I just can't believe that after more than 15 years there's still not a single well made easy to play q2 executable.

It's been available for qw for years (nquake and the other that configures it to look like q3, among others), q3 (quake live) and no one cares about q4, but even there it's just writing /exec toxjq.cfg and there you go.

It simply requires a well configured q2, for example tastyspleen, purri or clau (there are several), and upload the entire thing.
Even 1gb is nothing these days, so I just can't see why it is still almost impossible to play q2 without it looking like shit or filled with obscure cfg problems that game has but that only few people around the world know about.
There's a reason why there's only one new top player in the scene and why no one on the stream knew how the spawn system works, not even streamers.

I just remembered that around 2004-2005 there was this unreleased texture collection that was made publicly available around 2008 or something. That's just one example of how they keep everything to themselves there.

I can answer the ones Jehar didn't already adress.

The spawn system is voteable in the otdm mod, but the default behavior is "totally random but avoid the spot closest to where you died" (or the attacker, not really sure)

To avoid getting stuck, set cl_async to 0 and cl_maxfps to 120. It's possible to get it working with async 1 (asyncronous network/rendering fps) but since i don't use it i don't know what settings would be good.

In europe, and especially at the top level like this game, practically everyone uses .wav timers. It's always been like this and it's hard to change people since it kinda became a part of the game early on. Personally i think it'd be nice to get rid of the timers, but it's just not gonna happen.
