what annoys me is that I play with high ping a lot, and it completely under-rates me for local matches sometimes.

This happens to me, too; and the days/matches in which i have stable/lower ping, i easily overaim my opponents, that thinks i'm a tier slummer;
Sometimes, against the same opponent, same map, during a rematch the ping goes to whores and start to jitter, to spikening on the lagometer, etc; the opponents, that precedently lost miserabily, now start to win the lg fights, and to put some rail in without being sniped; so he gain control, until he win easily; they must be thinking there are different peoples playing on the same pc

iirc the quake live skillmatching system has a pretty small memory. So if you won some games recently and they lost that might happen.

Even if I did won (my elo went from 1400 to 1500 at best) and they did lose (their/his elo wasn't below 2000) for some time now, it's highly unlikely that 2000 elo should be considered grey for me.

if it does.... then you should set it to be a lot less volatile. Because the last few times that I lost a map to a guy 'ranked below' the site suddenly put all servers I play on as "extremely difficult"... even vs players I usually beat and were 'less skilled' servers before.
Also remove people who are in 'spectator mode' from the equation for use on the site ;)

if you don't win high enough vs a tier 3 player he's going to go into the high 20s and you will be dropping mad

I think QL takes into account how badly you beat your opponent so you being at the top skill bracket of course you will have much closer games. Someone in the mid range if they blow out some one QL will give them a lot of credit they don't deserve.

QL gives lots of credit for blowing out a tier 4 dueler even if they aren't very good.

The tier system is very broken too. I am probably tier 2 or 3 dueler and my friend who is tier 4 dueler let me have close game I still lost and it put me in tier 4.

I told the qlranks guys that it would really help the community if they fixed some sort of matchmaking system, as ID doesnt improve their so called matchmaking. Apparently that was a retarded idea and was dismissed very fast. I think it would have been pretty sweet. I used qlranks for finding opponents for a long time. But it only worked since I aimed to play the top elo players online.

So QL matchmaking not relying on ELO isn't a terrible blunder on id's part? ;)

how do you want ELO matchmaking to work? considering we can query a person for ELO, I can write a script to do it.
say you have a set of players, do you want it to be sorted by ELO and then divided by two closest players into pairs? is the goal the closest match?

Uh? Did you just say that when it's 1500 vs 1500 then winner gets +1 to his ELO score? Am I missing something? If I'm not then it's about +16.

Anyways, I imagine the system could be so that you'll have to enter an ELO range that you want to play against and if there is a player that meets that criteria and whose range you meet then you get matched.

yes, you're right, what I said is the wrong way around, if the elo range is too large, its 0 change. I think the point still stand, that you can't have clusters of players. I'd like to hear some ELO expert on this though, for clarification.

the divisions/pools is what QL has? I don't think entering numbers is very convenient either, if there is an interface, it should be automatic.

The point of elo system is that it doesn't really matter who do you play against. If there are two or more groups of players who don't play each other eg. european and na players then their coresponend ranking is useless but it doesn't matter for match making purposes since... they don't play each other. If someone heavily abuses the system by playing exclusively newbies then it still doesn't matter that he is worse than other players with similiar elo because he doesn't play them. And if he starts playing them his elo will get quickly corrected.

In short: elo ladder using data from all pub matches doesn't mean much in terms of actually ranking players (as we can observe by looking at top 100) but it's still good for match making. elo ladders used to rank players for example in chess use only tournament matches as reference.

elo system is smooth and I don't see any reason for introducing divisions (other than keeping track of ones progress but it's already there). Just match ppl who are in some arbitrary (or dynamic depending on players distribution) range for example +-200 works ok on my level (1400 elo).

edit: but I don't see the point of match making by qlranks without strictly integrating it to ql site by id software. People know about qlranks and use it in browser and in game - word went around. I don't get unmatched games anymore unless I want to since qlranks was introduced.

Hmm I play on the most populated servers - Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
Atm (very good time for duel) there are 20 duelers on these servers, 10 of them are in my (1200-1600) elo range and I recognize 0 of them from esr.

I can get a skill matched player by joining empty server and waiting up to 5 minutes.

I think that current system with in-browser and in-game scripts is convenient enough for players who have already set it up.

The actuall target of dumb-easy solutions are newcomers because this is all they are using - no external rankings, no esr match making. And they are there is a big chance of losing them due to bad first impression.

+0/1 will happen if k1llsen blows out some 1200 ELO dude with 40:0. Two players with equal ELO should get something within the range of +16/25 from my personal experience.

I would want a match making where I can set the target ELO range. Presets could include:

- Fair match: [-50; +50]
- Easier Opponent: [-200; -50]
- Stronger Opponent [+50;+200]

This way one could chose what type of match he is looking for to match the desired training.

Altenatively, I'd like to have a "player browser":

You would get a list of all players who recently played (or are playing) at one location. You would read their names, their status ("idle" or "playing (ETA 2:35)" ), their account type, have an "add friend" button, and a way to either join their game, chat with them, or invite them to your game.

and I must say it is pretty accurate. in beta i could guess someones skill within 5 points out of 100. cause i got around so much i played with nearly everyone. i watched and tracked my skill as i progressed form a lvl 25 in beta to skill 70 now. pretty much reached my plateau.

I know i'll never be skill 80+. which is what tier 5 was in beta. which is now tier 4 lol.

The thing is the skill rating system is amazing.

its just that we need THE SHUFFLE BASED ON THE DAM SKILL RATINGS. LMAO.
