any non-steam competitive game must have a good social/buddy/stats/achievements/etc system at least like QL, BF3 and so on
warsow doesnt yet and it won't rly grow without them
game itself is pretty good
They can't. Iirc crizis said something along the lines of "a game on steam has to be profitable in some way" whether it be through microtransactions or a direct charge for the purchase. Last I asked the devs they weren't willing to do this.
one problem i think is that they do not capitalize on their own momentum.
if i'm remembering correctly, the last couple patches they'll create a bunch of hype with something on the front page like a trailer, but then they don't release it until many months later when most people have already forgotten.
There's no potential in a 7 years old game that was always a very unpopular niche in a niche genre, especially in warsow's case.
Main problem they have is they are amateurs without a clue about developing a game. That's why it will always have core issues in every aspect, such as advertising (non existent), gameplay (been 7 years and they still don't know what they want, for example removing the ammo system after all that time, nor realize current walljumping is the main reason they still can't fix game balance), PR (they literally curse players) and so on.
Considering the game's severe lack lack of players, and that it's been hinted some developers are stepping out of the project very soon, I consider it dead. Not saying that it is too late to fix it, if the devs somehow realize they have to make game-changing modifications and additions, but it does not have a future.
edit: I've always found weird everyone supposedly likes the game but their biggest duel cup ever had 22 sign ups including the devs themselves (who knows how many showed up), and that if you check the server browser (both versions) not a single person plays basewsw or even mods with items but only instagib, ca in q3 maps and bomb&defuse, in that order.
One of Falckys cups had 60 sign ups and 40 played if I recall, not so long ago. Think it was one of his..
And you said: "their biggest duel cup ever had 22 sign ups including the devs themselves" And you're wrong in that case, because it wasn't the biggest cup warsow ever had.
there always a copy of quake 4 on ebay you can get for £2, you torrent the iso to each other, update it to 1.4.2, download http://nullnuke.netai.net/download.php?op=details&lid=23 so you can play online without a cdkey, and make maps and models for q43a
warsow movement is just ridiculos awesome. So many possibilitys to keep your speed. Its even better than cpma since you can do a 180 dash and keep your whole speed. Walljumps are just great
They're trying to - ClownFart highlighted me in #warsow.na the other day for a suggestion of websites to talk to in order to (What I would presume to be) promote Warsow 1.0. I couldn't think of a few names that he hasn't heard of.
Tried it out yesterday and I must say its really good :D might be coming back duelling some if it wasnt as dead . I m in a server alone from 20 mins :(
Wsw has been around for so long, why should it become big all of sudden? Unless some generous person invests lots of money I don't see how it could possibly grow out from being a niche game. Like Ischju said it's not enough to 'steal' players from other quakes (and clones), you must also draw interest from new players and get lots of them to play your game.
