cons : it's about that ctf map i dont know (it's been a while i haven't played quake) with this "blender". the casters should have found a more glorious name than just " blender". i was thinking about something like " The Kenwood Chef of Doom " :P

- advertised 60 fps (being a temp location I personally wouldn't advertise uncertainties)

- Volume discrepancies (not a game changer just annoying, most commercials and scary movies on tv are bad for this heh)

I think it's all basically been bad. It's probably the worst quakecon tournament I've ever followed.

I totally agree. I was about to compare this year event with the Qcon 2011-event in the introductions of this thread but I thought it would be too harsh.

watched yesterday the stream about 5minutes, had to stop watching it due the stream giving me headache, it just looked so bad and my eyes hurt.

also im not really able to find any PROPER brackets or whatsoever, havent really looked neither but usually been on top of newspostes etc etc

Temporary Cons (issues that were fixed eventually)
- stream lag/tearing
- audio issues, including things like having music unintentionally playing while casting and audio levels going all over the place

Cons
- none of the playoff matches streamed until like 2am EST when they did voice-over of the demos
- the casting during the Quarter Finals was, frankly, awful. so many awkward moments and half the time they were talking about shit unrelated to the match at hand
- Carmack's keynote not streamed (or did I miss it? idk)
- Day 1 VODs not available yet

Pros
- imo the stream HUD/cfg is decent, especially the score bar they added for Duel
- some decent matches
- Quakecon twitter account has been up to date
- casting overall decent (not amazing, but decent)
- a shitty tournament is better than no tournament at all I suppose

ESR is esports site, so we focus on and discuss the fucking tournament part of it.
Why should it even matter to us that there are things besides tournament on QCon?

Because if the people who are actually organizing and hosting the event don't treat it as a tournmanet and/or don't give priority to the tournament aspect of Qcon then it won't be covered as such. As a result, the largely insignifcant ESReality community would have no basis for whining. Contrary to what you might think, the ESR community and eSports followers do not rule the world, and their desire to see "tournament coverage" out of an event that is not treated like a tournament by organizers will not magically transform it into a tournament. Simple, really.

As what QCon is treated by organizers is totally irrelevant for ESR, because if they announce big LAN with big prizes, they inevitably arise big expectations from esports community. If they don't fulfill those expectations, it's automatically a basis for negative criticism. Also, it does ACTUALLY mean that id software doesn't care about esports and/or QL if they treat it as unimportant, so it is perfectly reasonable for ql/esports community to express their negativity.
Size of community doesn't matter. Even if it is one person, so what? His expectations are ruined, so he has all the reasons to curse, even if he is alone and others don't agree with him.

Pro:
-the shoutcasters : lvlup tv guys are not bad,jehar is good as usual,he allways make a game look nice
-the picmip 0: it is really nice to show the world that Quake is a good looking game ( for ppl who care about graphics more then about the gameplay )
-Lan : guys,this is a Quake LAN,we dont have much lans,do we ? be happy that there is still quake on lans and players still care about it
-John Carmack : you guys hate him because of the long key note,they should have made two streams,ofc,but this guy is the one who was after Doom and Quake,without him,you would not be here talking shit about him, it is nice to see him talking about gaming and future plans ( i couldnt watch it,but i would have lestened to him if i had the chance to )
- High-level : well,i think the lvl of the games is high with alot of pros playing,i even think that the lvl is higher then dhs ( personal opinion )

Bad:
-own3d tv steam : the stream is un-watchable for me ( maybe cause i use a v old laptop ) but it is really un-watchable and alot of ppl have already mentioned it, streaming on Twitch TV would have been better and the number of viewers would have been much more high
-only 1 Stream : people couldnt watch some games cause of John Carmack's keynote,would have been better if they made two or three streams,so everyone will have what he wants ( re-broadcasting games is not like live games,since you already know who will win and even the score)
-Coverage: idk but,in this,DreamHack is better,with almost live pics of all players and some fun stuffs and interviews.

-that it exists;

-some enetertaining ctf matches (haven't seen almost anything from duel yet:/);

-Disrepute, Zoot, Jehar (he's getting much better imho). Fear: not my cup of tea, but valid effort, that I appreciate (but I don't want to hear phrases like 'hallo rail' or 'lg tickle' ever again:]).

Cons (here we go):
-late announcement prohibiting many players from attending (yes, they knew there is gonna be a tournament, but details are kinda important if only for traveling from Europe to USA);

-unusable site (schedules difficult to find, yesterday's tournament stream link not provided etc);

-delays;

-own3d (WHY?);

-only one stream on thursday. completely broken;

-abysmal sound quality;

-silencing Zoot (seriously, they were told to keep it down) and dictating which game is supposed to be streamed in the middle of another, pretty decent match;

-crappy group stages of duel masters tournament and of course my favourite: PLAYOFFS OFF STREAM. Seriously. WHO. THE. FUCK. thought it was going to fly? I understand that they don't give a shit anymore, but forcing casting crew to cast over demos? Really? which brings me to my final point:

-very strong feeling of a giant fuck you to hardcore quake community. we need to realise we don't matter as much as we used to, even to id: the company that fans like us (I'm newschool, but I love the game to death so my point stands:]) rocketed to the status that they vacate right now. I know they owe us nothing, it's obvious and would be stupid to think otherwise, but id themselves are stating that Quakecon is about the appreciation for the fans (it certainly used to be that way). And that's the best they can do? For me it's apparent not a single fuck was given this year. It's a shame, because I (as I'm sure many people were) was excited for Qcon. I thought: fuck, late announcement, that's stupid, but there are some prizes, hmm lvlup crew to cast... maybe it's gonna be cool afterall. And the whole thing turned out just... lame.

Man... so much whine coming out of me recently. And i just want to run around with rl and shoot people in the face. But the past two weeks were just so demoralising.

Whine or not, this is really obvious to me too.
I'm here for the first time, and I've seen the following things:

- nobody knows when the tourney broadcasts are (or cares)
- in some cases nobody knows that there is a tournament ("what game is this?)
- halo kiddies literally saying "oh my god stop camping" while dahang is sitting with 50/0 stack holding a flag
- dahang, rapha, chance and others walk through the halls and nobody bats an eye (if you went to any MLG event, every SC2 pro gets mobbed nonstop for autographs and bullshit)
- every finals match is rushed through as fast as possible, to get back to what really matters: marketing console games and guys with tuxedos handing out sausage rolls

The grand finals games were pretty excellent, but it's obvious that quake is rolling over to die (while games like SC2 have a thriving esports community because they actually try). There doesn't seem to be anything we as enthusiasts can do, either.

Ah well. Time to go work on my SIIIIICK case mod for next year and listen to dubstep.

There are no pros. Laggy stream, barely seen any games, ID disabling callvote for non-premium users. Gtfo

Pros: zoot, disrepute, jehar and that CTF dude have done a very nice job of casting and this tournament is probably one I've watched the most out of all the recent QL tournaments and enjoyed every single game that I have seen, exciting CTF lineups and matches, seeing CZM do good (i'm a fanboy :D), while zoot is away I am ganking his beer & food. Sorry bro but if anything in the fridge is within 7 days of expiry, it is a "health and safety hazard" and i'm "throwing it out" c=

Cons: the "spinning logo" now has id logos as well as 3 Bethesda and ZeniMAX ones. People are critical of id sofware, but this was a great reminder that they themselves do not have the leverage of arguing with the suits, and they are not the root of every bad decision ( I of course, don't have a direct idea of how it goes in their board meetings and i don't have a direct idea, but however imagination paints a picture of something between a HIlter Youth rally and a McCarthian anti-red trial), the casters being told to switch streams mid-game, etc

The point was highlighting possibly the lowest scene in quakecon history (fire, 8 hours quasi-online stream with the spinning logo) as both a reminder to how negative things could get, and set the transition into an actual negative point from this Quakecon (which was a stark reminder that it's not id software firmly in complete creative charge anymore and there are 3 additional entities tied in as far as decision making goes).

As far as John Carmack, he gave an interesting (but prolonged speech), but however why would it be negative? If you (hypothetically) don't like any certain aspects of your job, then a public press interview or keynote is the worst fucking place in the world to go on a rant. That's what common sense is all about). Additionally, I mentioned above that I am not aware of the room temperature of intra-office politics of that company (and who outside of the id software/bethesda/zenimax spectre of influence would know or give a shit enough to find out?), but recent changes in both mentality and certain business decisions could be attributed to the takeover from a spector's point of view. Notice words like "would" and "possibly" indicating speculation and opinion rather than fact.

more like hiring people based on friendship. Otherwise there's absolutely no reason why mattcom and syncerror are still working on id software after several years of major mistakes.

The hatred towards syncerror shouldn't exist honestly, he's not the project manager of QL, nor does he make the shit decisions that have been implemented into QL. From my understanding he's more of a mapper, and does more actually, but no one should be hating syncerror for QL related problems. Hate the people in charge and "the suits", not him. When I met him at Quakecon he was nice, and we had a players meeting with him and someone else (I honestly can't remember his name but he worked on the QL project too). They liked our ideas, but I doubt they got approved for the funding or time for it by management. Legally he can't show dissatisfaction for QL, but no doubt he's not happy with some of the decisions that have been made (I don't know how he feels at all, just assuming/taking a guess).

Mattcom lost my video interview, as well as many other ones, because XX months later when he tried to get them the SD card didn't work. A simple copy-paste at the event would of prevented this, but what can you expect from someone who can't upload something because the tournament network doesn't allow it. Yeah there clearly isn't a shitload of other networks around he could upload it to.

Implementing some community ideas would be nice, but what killed QL was not acknowledging the traffic it was obviously going to generate at those 2 moments (infinite queues to play). His incompetence is the sole reason why 20% of accounts tried the game and the rest didn't even once.
Add to that the absolute lack of advertising and lots of missed opportunities (today included) and it's clear he simply shouldn't have been in charge of any game.

No excuse for the small prizes at Quakecon, I watched them give out over 200k dollars in prizes. The car should go to the masters duel winner. The rest can go to the raffle but they should make the cheap people who just want free stuff at least buy raffle tickets and the raffle funding goes to the tournament prize pool. A woman winning a video card worth more than what Axema won and an individual member on the CTF winning was a complete joke. I can understand lack of sponsorship money for events like DH they do the best they can Quakecon just does stupid things with its sponsorship. Give away all the sponsorship money to people who were probably playing LoL at Quakecon.

PROS: Some of the best grand finals with exception of CTF at any major event in the history of quake.

I know you mean well but you can't really expect any of the parties involved to go through the hassle of having the car delivered to the EU should the winner be a European. You'd have to have the car modified etc. (e.g. red signal lights aren't allowed in germany, you'll need a mph/kmh conversion, I'd imagine that most of EU countries have similar laws)
All in all the costs for a European could easily go into $10-$20k to import a new car.
I don't know for sure but I'd bet that Ventrilo wants to give an actual car away live because it has a much bigger promo effect, this is more the sponsor's decision than Quakecons I'm sure.

This just seems entirely not true. If you think QC goes out and purchases merchandise from sponsor money to raffle them out you must be borderline retarded. Sponsors are generally quite happy to hand out some of their products but reluctant to give actual cash to fund the prize pool (the duel masters isn't even Intel sponsored anymore). Just take a loot at the Intel sponsored events

2011:
Duel - $14k
TDM - $28k
Brink - $5k (Intel/Bethesda open, probably not all of the money from Intel)

Total 2011 - somewhere around $47k

2012:
CTF - $7k
open Duel - $2k

Total 2012 - $9k

That's an 80% drop in sponsor money from Intel, id/Bethesda stepped in to sponsor the duel prizepool.

Lets ask Cypher which prize he would rather have. A car he could sell for 30k + extremely easy or 9k. Also am I wrong they exclude Europeans from having raffle tickets for the car? I sure didn't see any of the car raffle ticket winners pulling out American ID so I'd bet Europeans weren't excluded.

what shocked me the most is nr. of viewers. 1000-2000 everytime i tuned in. even in the finals. the keynote had 4-5k tho, i guess mostly coders, videogame journalists etc... last time iirc it was at least 3,5-5k constantly (which is still very low). meanwhile in 2gds sc2 stream: 15k-40k. and in theory this was the biggest QL event.

simply just sad. not a sponsor in their right mind will give money to gain exposure for 2k people. at this point i guess its obvious casuals just dont care and many regular players has given up on QL (myself included). there is absolutely zero chance to get new players / viewers etc, pretty much this was the last opportunity they had.

as for CSN: i thought they will do something like organize small tournies / cups among casual BYOC visitors, like ffa, domination, 1 flag ctf, showcasing the game for viewers that its not all about the hardcore stuff. but no: call of duty, a cartoony game i dont even know the name of and god knows what else... glad i didnt donated, it just stinked from miles away.

and yes, not like it would matter anymore but this fucking shame of an event has nothing to do with and gives bad name to quake.

although, id like to thank to lvlup for the top level commentary, as usual, and congratulate to Jehar for his improvement in casting (at least compared to last time i heard). all casters did good job.

No one in Europe had any reason to watch other than Cypher. Sponsors are spending money for Quakecon, ID is just managing the money very poorly. Timezones were also a problem for people from Europe who wanted to watch it was like 5 am for them.

i felt so bad for these guys man. at least when i started in beta.... i had played years ago so i knew what i had to do. but i still couldn't move or aim well at all...no way i was above lvl 25. Now i can hit lvl 80 sometimes on a very very rare day. and also started in t2! and worked my way up with a sense of progression and with a much bigger player base too.

I mean i just feel bad for these guys having to start in t3. I couldn't even stomach it any longer there was so many i tier jumped to t4. I hope some of these guys stick around till they drop down to t2.

And i don't trash talk the newbs and votekick them off the server like an asshole. It walways kills me how thats way more common and acceptable then votekicking some new suspect alt that made his account today and is slumming t3. I kept telling these guys after 20 matches they will be tier placed...but I dunno if they even believed me.

I figured maybe it was cause qcon ended that some people decided to try some quake again. I was begging some of them to stick with the game till 20 matches in ql. but i dunno.
