Today we are announcing the FACEIT Quake Live Sunday Cup, a $125 weekly tournament on Quake Live that will be hosted in co-operation with e-sports legend Alessandro “stermy” Avallone on our platform starting in September.

I think this is fantastic news. I'm really looking forward to see how the platform works, with the streaming, tournaments and so on. We have seen different "integrated" platforms in the past, but they looked to me more like patchworks. I know it's early to say, but I'm really hyped about this, and at least the presentation so far looks very promising.

This is excellent news for anyone who loves quake.

Is this related to the cups of strenx? or do they plan to cooperate in a way. 2 cups are not necessary.

It's pretty sad how when they left to play Shootmania lot of people called them gold diggers (stermy and strenx), but when Quake really needs someone they are among the first ones to step up and save the day. I guess it shows they really love this game.

This is great news, even though I suck ill still be taking part every Sunday I can. The loss of zotac made me realise the importance of not only watching the cups but also taking part in them. I hope others who never used to play zotacs will play in these faceit Sunday cups just to show support for it.

Nothing to stop you taking part after all euro ctf teams have played in US online cups (and even done quite well) on 100+ ping :D But yeah I know....

These are the same people who will not play friendlies in CTF/CA, much less DUEL with anything higher than 45 ping, so I wouldn't count on it. Don't believe me, join the pick up chat room and see what happens if they have to play in a server that is not Virginia

What is stopping people in NA from organizing stuff? Oh yeah, that's right, these are the same people like higgs who need others to do simple things like make IRC channels for them. Without a doubt, NA QL (not NA past Quakes) is the laziest community with the most kids I've ever seen. Like, if people don't hold the NA community's hand and do everything for them then nothing ever gets done. EVER. As a part of NA, I can't help but feel happy that QL is only relevant in Europe. At least over there, big name and non-big name people volunteer and do something for the game

Great news. There's nothing much on the site yet but the concept sounds cool and it looks pretty good. Thumbs up to Stermy for stepping up for Quake again. At first I thought it's 2GD's replacement for Zotac so I wonder if James is gonna do his thing anyway. And with strenx doing his cups this might be pretty good time for Quake...

Incidentally, German gamescon news headlines are currently buzzing about how a bunch of games was to become "free to play", and how this and browser based gaming was a hot trend in the industry. Amongst others, they're mentioning 3 Ubisoft titles and a Command&Conquer installment by EA.

Would be kind of ironic, wouldn't it, if id turned out to be the fps genre's front runner in an eventually highly successful business model ...

Free to play games are definitely the future (look at League of Legends), though Quake Live's business model is far from highly successful, it's barely self-sustainable (well I guess if it had the player base of League of Legends it would turn out to be fairly profitting, but that's a dream that'll never come true).

That's why I said "eventually" and "business model". The latter to be distinguished from "business".

Of course, the model in any particular case will only be as successful as the game is. On the other hand, don't underestimate the effect of buzz, or hype for that matter.

A general recognition of id being an "innovator" - and I'd willingly admit that they've implemented a bunch of interesting stuff, reaching well beyond in-game advertising - could renew interest, attract sponsors supporting new events, which in turn attract new players etc etc.

I agree, although I think Quake Live already had its peak, and never going to get bigger than that. It's just a matter of keeping it alive now until a feasible replacement surfaces (like Reborn, Quake 5 or whatever it might be).

The gaming industry is particularly notorious in what is a general IT business habit, i.e. selling products by hyping them. "Oh gawd, we're so excited about our new product blah blah blah wetting our pants every other hour blah blah". But then, when ppl actually come to try those great new products, it's often enough a sufficiently sobering experience to make them start coming back to what they had. Like it happened 2008 with q4, where ppl/event organizers literally fell back to q3.

Also, ql is an incredibly mature game, specifically in the competitive fps field. Everybody, literally, trying to release something entirely new in this area will have a whole lot of catching up to do. id itself got trapped there with q4, when they released what was a basic framework of a multiplayer game, hard to mod too, to the public saying: "we'll gonna leave everything else to the community". Which almost inevitably resulted in a "too little to late" situation (fuckers!)

So really, as long as there is a sufficient interest in competitive fps gaming, I'm not seeing ql dying that easily soon, and wouldn't even exclude the possibility of a renaissance. Given the ppl running it don't expect it to make big bucks for them.

Fat should make tournaments with bigger prize money. He should host a tournament weekly for TDM (3divisions with prizes) and DUEL. If quake had this then quake scene would increase so much! Do all Soccer stars give some of their millions back to the sport? Most of them don't. And why should they? It's their hard earned money they can do whatever they want with it. They've allready given back enough by competing and giving their fans a good show (same with Fatal1ty). There are individuals who will support the sport but they are a small group (in Quake it's Stermy, 2GD and now Strenx) and that's perfectly fine.

In a simplistic view, there are two kinds of people. One kind sees the cake and fights for the bigger piece. Another kind tastes the cake, thinks of improving the recipe, and starts baking more cakes, sharing them with others and making sure they get what is right.

Most sports pros do some charity work in their communities or give some money to charity organizations, so yeah, that is a really bad analogy.

Would be nice if people actually signed up and played this. Zotac has shown that QL can rack up to 150-200 active players, it's just that most of them are too lazy.

Don't see why sponsors should bother if the players don't.

The only thing that worries me is that they want to run their own stream. There will be no problem if thay actually get some competent people to do this streaming and casting wise (wouldn't mind seeing some familiar faces if you know what I mean). Someone that community can trust to deliver. Otherwise: can't wait for that project to begin.

The casters in the Quake community should definitely get in contact with them. The would definitely be valuable assets for FACIT, and all parties should benefit from a cooperation.

i was worried about teams like lvl^ not wanting to stream under another brand and faceit giving you or any other organisation proper credit and freedom of methods. I'm sure any of these issues should be resolvable though.

That's something I've been asking myself too, especially whether said casters will get some money, after all they have to stream on their stream and the ad-revenue probably goes into faceit's pocket instead of the streamer's.
