xonotic loses at stability, it has a wank engine that will have serious fps issues, while wsw will have solid 125 fps. I like the visual world of xonotic alot more tho.
i dont know why but i always loved icewind dale more than bg, it had that amazing atmosphere and music, bg had too much text for a kid and it was boring :(
The "too much text" means you have living characters and chance for proper role play. That's why it's called RPG. : P
Best of the genre (on PC):
-------------------------------- Fallout
Fallout 2
Fallout 3
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2
Planescape Torment
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II
On a side note, Final Fantasy VII and VIII are also awesome. Vast gameworld, good and complicated story, hundreds of hours of gameplay, nice CG and the characters are sooo living - but it's rather and adventure-RPG, than a classical one.
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is crap in terms of character interactions (it all begins with topic-based conversations, lol), but you have the opportunity to properly play a role, if you are a hardcore role player and have the attitude. But if you try to judge the game on it's own, without the player's emphasis on role playing, then it's quite bad - otherwise fun.
I played it through and it certainly IS a hack 'n slash. Maybe I can call it "action-RPG", with more emphasis on action and less on role playing and character-world interactions - which latter two defines a "true" RPG.
For example; if you want, you can win the whole Fallout-game without killing ANYBODY. Or if you have the needed INT, CHR + Speech skill, you can talk the last boss into suicide - you make him realize, that his ultimate plan scientifically is a complete bullshit : D, and he decides to end his miserable existence on his own. And so on.
On the other hand, you mentioned Planescape too. That's also a real RPG.
Though one time, in the first Fallout, after finishing the game (except the last boss), I started a holy crusade and butchered EVERY LIFEFORM across the entire map. Every living and mechanical creature down to the last one. Just for kicks. >: ]
I will never forget that epic jiffy, when my ultimate anti-hero (lvl 21, karma -1500) entered The Hub middle-town and the elite guards in combat armor immediately fled to the four winds with friendly "He's here! Run for your liveees!" shouts. c|8]
Or dealing a 137 dmg critical against a super mutant eye with a BB gun. Poor guy...such a humiliating death.
Or...
You can kill your overseer too, if you're clicking fast enough to start a combat round before the ending sequence starts. Dat old faggot had to die.
But in general, playing a "real" character and don't caring all that much about stats and xp is way more fun. Especially in Fallout, with the vast amount of epic and hilarious moments it has.
Warsow definitely improved in 1.0. Played Xonotic for the first time in a while last night, it was more fun than I remembered. Both seem equally "active" though, heh. :|
