The point you are trying to make is that the majority of americans are x% irish, which is a total bullshit faux fact that you either you have come up with it yourself, for whatever reason, or one of your relatives has told you it out of sheer ignorance and you haven't even bothered to verify it.

I'm guessing it's the former, and the most likely explanation is the following: The *majority* of americans that you personally have encountered in Ireland have probably mentioned that they are "x% irish", the explanation being that the main reason an american goes to Ireland in the first place is because he/she is of Irish descent, and has gone there to either visit relatives or just feel proud to be Irish and know they have *some* kind of established ancestry, a thing which the majority of americans are lacking (we all know how pathetically engrained some "cool" aspects of american culture are upon the habitants of US, having italian/irish/jewish ancestry being one of them).

Every other "type" of american is more likely to have their holidays elsewhere. It's like some italian saying that the majority of americans are x% italian based on the amount of italian-americans he has encountered in rome mentioning this.
