work on your strafe jumping, it will save you countless of times.
don't be too happy to get into fire fights, damage doesn't mean much, it's all about your k/d numbers

Mic instead of speakers, but you need to be agressive and movement speed doesn't that important as dodging. Sure you can be dodgy motherfucker who gets himself +50 but his team was raped and you loose. Teamplay skills are more important.

You win games by being aggressive, just team version of aggressiveness. Join fights that your mates fight, even with MG. Cess down people who have dangerous weapons (RG, LG).

Remember MG has really long range, so you can help your mates with their fights, dealing damage while not sharing the damage they're taking.

If you cess with MG and one of you dies but enemy also dies dropping weapon, it's a win in the long term. If enemy dies not dropping weapon, but taking 3 weapons to his grave, it's still a win. After all, you only lost spawner with MG.

If you don't have weapon and it's time for RA or Quad or whatever else your mates call you to, fucking go there! It doesn't matter that you only have MG. Your mates may share something and even if they don't have anything, enemy WILL come and they WILL bring weapons with them. Weapons for you. Just be there with everyone and you will see.


The main problem is, if you play cessy game with people who would rather close themselves in LG room and spend winter there, the team will fail. You will get much worse net than them, but it's their loss in the end.


Even Grim Dungeons can have ultra-cessy moments with great results (everyone running into RA room with MG until it's secured, then proceed to rape incoming opponents), but for this, you need whole team to play like a unit.


Oh yeah, and yes! If one out of 4 players play ultra-campy, the opposing team will probably allow him to keep positive net even though the team loses by 80 frags. It's only logical to rape spawners instead of losing resources on fighting camper who won't even come to quad :)

I've been playing a lot of TDM lately as well, and am also trying to improve. I notice that at the end of a lot of games, I'll have the same damage as the top scoring player on my team, but his net will be 3, and mine will be -15. After I noticed that pattern in 3 games in a row, I went into the next game focusing on survivability. Trying to only do free damage instead of exchanging damage, and only sticking out fights I knew I could win. I did less damage than normal, but ended up with a positive net.

Knowing when to be aggressive and when to +back has always been something I've struggled with in duel as well.

I also find that in tdm, dodging seems more important than aim.

without knowing the specific circumstances, i have to say this is more a choice than something that is be default a good strategy. the thing you have to realize is that someone on your team has to do the damage output. if you have 4 guys who all focus on just surviving and not giving up kills, you will ultimately lose control of the major items and get caught completely out of position for the powerups (assuming the other team isnt all idiots).

the key is knowing when you need to push and do damage and when you need to be in survivability mode.

That's good advice. I still play a lot of CA (I know....I know.....but come on, I want to play quake! Those are the games that are available), and I notice that I die fast in CA, but out damage everyone else on my team by a LOT. Everyone else wants to bait, or run away once they get railed, eat a rocket, or someone starts to LG them. I don't, I just stick it out and make sure I get 400+ dmg output before I die.

I think this kind of thinking is what makes me give up a lot of frags in TDM.

Yes it does! I'm battling the same issue right now. I really can't hold out on being aggressive which leads to massive minus nets. but for instance I usually have a positive net damage.

Pickups are different for me, I have the need to stack up and don't hold too much for teammates since everyone needs to keep his own track of items and powerups. That also leads to teams losing games because you generally have 1 or two guys that don't attack where they should and when they should.

Getting better at tdm will require playing pickups to get the map knowledge needed, like good angles to do free damage, routes people take to secure items and how to counter them, what are good and bad areas to be in, or what is the positional advantage on maps you can get, how to secure certain areas etc. That is what pickups will give you. The problem is that not all maps are played in pickups, also not all pickup players are good.
Because of that you need to get some people you like that for instance have a really solid aim and want to extend to TDM and form a team, start by entering lowest divisions and looking for practice games emphasizing you are looking for low skill clans to play with.
You will run into troll teams that will want to play you and that are much stronger. Records demos of this games. There are tools like U2DDV that will help you and your team analyze what happened when you lose the game by a large margin, also secure a pro account for one member of your team making it possible to control the server with mercylimit 50. You will avoid wasting your time when stronger teams comes to tier slum you.

Everything else comes down to time you play tdm and playing pickups when not playing organized, you will start notice significant improvement in map knowledge and when you put in enough hours with your team playing together you will ntoice how it becomes more natural that you guys are tracking same items and are going to same places making it easier to get them. Improving in results etc.

public tdm matches is not tdm matches, it's just team ffa. are any pickups in australia or new zealand?

I see absolutely no difference between premium public and pickup.

Oh wait, there's a difference: there's more assholes in pickups and the premium pubs are smaller community which gets together more nicely :)

So yeah, if you filter out tier 3- players, public and pickup are the same level of tactics (simple well-known strategies from start to end, all about teamplay aka team FFA).

Clan games are where it's at. There you get proper tactics, whole team changing strategy in response to enemy activity. Also some lovely rage on Mumble sometimes :)

The difference is, sometimes the same players play on premium pubs and in pickups. On premium pubs the players usually stay 3-4 maps, so they behave better than in pickups, where most guys just play one match with ego-attitude.

Unless you are referring to some higher skill pubs which I haven't seen form on their own. Pubs usually end in 1 or two guys leaving @ around 16 minute mark is the score is dominated by other team, also pubs tend to get unbalanced fast and players joining usually make 4v3 teams which makes pubs chaotic.

Pickups do have a lot of ego, you need more time to push your own ego with the rest of the players there, most of the times that doesn't work, but then again, you don't play pickups to win exclusively (or for your own ego), you play pikcups because they guarantee a certain stability in games and auto teams usually makes it more fair than a shuffle on public game. You play pickup to learn about maps positions and timings.

Yes, there are sometimes australian pickups with good teamplay.

Learn to 50%+ with hitscan weapons, time your share of the items, instantly become TDM legend. If the first is beyond your reach, drop hitscan weapons to someone who can, be carried to victory. Jesting aside, TDM is pretty fun.

post is kind of an oxymoron :). i agree with the first part as far as ql tdm is concerned. the difference for me is that thats what makes it less fun compared to say cpm or qw tdm.
