I've got no opinion yet as I'm on a pro account. In a month or two I'm back on standard, but I don't think I'll mind the map rotation. Probably better for when playing casually now and then.

Suggestions
- Add 4 maps to choose from (in case all 3 might be tripe)
- Host competitive duel servers (allowing callvote and timeout commands)

Objectively speaking public servers are now empty, which affects both standard and prem/pro subscribers.
And even if you were lucky enough to find one chances are it's either sub-optimal ping-speaking or runs horrible maps, even tho it's generally both.


I won't even mention how long it takes to fill a premium server: they are indeed more populated than before, but for someone like me who pings 70 in .de (used to be 45 just a couple updates ago, but I'm fed up with iD blaming people ip providers instead of putting some pressure on level3, especially when my .de pings are fine in other games), and plays only the weekend, it's a pain in the ass to find servers in the .uk/.fr/.it area.

Most of the time it's either scrims or t3 players kicking you.

On a final note, it's not about not being able to find games.
That's extremely vague and not the point at all.
It's all about having half a hour to play and spending the majority of it waiting for someone to join you.

This truly makes the difference in a multiplayer, in my opinion: newcomers can't be bothered already to learn an elitist game like quake, imagine if they had to wait half a hour to get their asses handed on the top of that.

i wouldnt like for this debate to go on for miles here, but all i was trying ot say is... subs get more games with subs ... yes pub is poor as hell, but before u couldnt get a premium game going instantly, now i can. And having standart users as friends means they PM me for invites aswell, which i then usually give.

Anyways yes waiting half an hour is terrible, having a sub almoast eliminates that or reduces it to cca 5 min.

... having a pro sub brings its benefits in terms when you are making a server, u just add invites from your friends list and whacka BAM - min. of 2v2 is on the way.

The maps are worse and worse,they just put more "team arena" maps instead of keep true real CTF maps,no way to play on publics japanese,spidercrossings,troubled waters....
So you have to play reflux and shinning all the time or just play "team arena" maps as inner sanctums.

I allways had pro account untill this month,now i play more publics and i can see its just so shit,this makes the game worse and worse to new players and even to older.

Map rotation is a good thing. It gives the free user enough time to learn new maps, potentially to love them and potentially to subscribe in order to gain back access to it without having to wait.

The very casual player who doesn't care much about the maps will have more diversity as a free user. The free users who care so much about some maps that they'll stop playing if they don't have access to it are so engaged in the game they should subscribe anyway.

The other positive thing is that those who really want to play specific maps do so on premium servers now instead of standard servers. The sad part is that most premium CA servers are now on a strict dm6/overkill rotation >.> .

I wouldn't have taken map callvoting out of the normal standard servers though.

There are no very casual players in QL who don't care about maps.
Even beginners quickly learn that some maps are unpleasant to play, and others are much better.
Also, almost no one wants to learn new maps and diversity is only theoretical ideal, while actual players, especially casual players, are lazy and want to play only in familiar environment, since it's already a hard game as it is.
Map rotation only subdivides quake even more into free/premium realms, annoys players and not solves any problem that QL has.

You are correct, but they now have money at the expense of something that might kill ql just as easily. So it may be considered as a win only for id, and not for game and players.

We all know how important premium/pro subcriptions are for id, it is the main source of income for the game.
There is two ways to get people to buy premium/pro, either you add exclusive and interesting features for premium/pro users or you simply remove features for standard users.
Unfortunately id followed their trend of going backwards by choosing the latter, trend which began precisely when they decided to split the community of a dead game in half by adding the premium/pro subscriptions system.
I guess it makes sense since their free to play model has always been a complete failure, so they try to make their game pay to play a little bit more each day which is maybe the best option for Quake Live afterall.

That's also why I personally think that people who thought that they were supporting QL when they decided to buy premium/pro were actually contributing to its deadly fate, maybe if their premium/pro system didn't work out they would have thought of ways to make the game more attractive instead of making it more restrictive.

CTF is horrible.

I'm sick of playing two playable maps. And activity is all times low.

The lack of free content its the real problem to newcomers,if you play publics,you will notice its same maps all day long,i am not against vote rotation,its just about same maps allways,there's too lack of some features standard accounts could have and it doesnt cause most of this its for pro/premium.

I think people that buy pro/premium are really interested on the feature of spawn servers,join praccy games servers or even pickups.
Years ago,people used to buy the game and later they were motivated to rent server to play their games,i think quakelive could rent servers and some advanced features,that would allow standard users to get more free stuff not to pay for everything,but sadly quakelive its not working this way.

Fact is 99.9% of QL players are not willing to pay to get more/new stuff so they have to be forced to do so by removing content., and it worked.

New players ofcourse will not pay for advanced features,cause they never will play the game enough time to get "addicted",they see Quakelive its so limited to take care about it,so they quit after 1-2 weeks.

"Old" players are used to play Quake,they want play cups,pickups,praccy games so they could be interested on advanced features as spawn servers or rent it.

But the key to keep QL alive and more active its give more free content (NOT ALL) to new players,they will play it more and will love it.

Your idea is already dismissed: what they learned in those 2 years (with more content just like you proposed) is most quake players are cheap asses.

Of course we all want it to be free with all maps available therefore more populated servers, but it won't. And don't think 2gd's reborn will be free or that doom4 will be pirate-able.

You talking about 2008-2009,that's last year of quake 3 just when Quakelive beta came up and people played it free,you must look at first years of quake3,it was total successful,big comunity with growing numbers,big tournaments......so you wrong and quake 3 was so mutch bigger than Quakelive ever been.

QL does not have potential. From 2008 to 2010 it was completely free relying on advertisement, and even then it was less than 50% q3 players by 99 and 2 companies went bust because of how that business model failed.

ca is not quake so ca players are not quakers. It's like saying the game relies on instagib and spacectf players, but we "quakers" simply don't care about them: they don't exist.
This update made some people use their premium accounts and play mods with items, which is a good thing, and the ones that left are ca/instagib/etc. only players so it's not a loss.

Problem is most ca-only players are starting to like black cathedral instead rofl.

its absolute shit. pub quake is so dead now. over the course of an hour i find maybe 2-3 duels. finding a game outside of duel on pub is just too dreaded for me to try. since standard vs. prem patch ive basicly only played ca's with people on my list.

i even fucking play tdmpickups because rest of quake is too dead

Before rotation, at least there was "common ground" where you could just almost instantly have a game, i.e. duel on ztn or ca on campgrounds, without worrying about anything. Everyone has different preferences, but generally those are few maps that are liked pretty universally, and servers with them are easily populated with players. There was some kind of "default" servers with ztn/dm6/etc where always was some games going on, and if you couldn't find a game that suits your specific needs, you could at least fall back to that "default" game.

With rotation, id removed some things that were at least "gluing" small community together, and now it's a lot harder to actually play. The fact that new system caused a lot of premium accounts actually made situation even worse, because it means much less available players in free scene, but still not much in premium. Now there are very few server choices that would universally attract players - free map won't attract premium players, premium map won't attract free players, some custom server setting won't attract people who like normal vanilla ql, etc. So it is now much harder to find a suitable game than before.

I remember that 1 year ago, whenever I opened QL, even in the middle of the night, there was at least 1-2 servers running that for me were perfectly fine to join and play. Now I open QL, and don't want to join any servers because they all suck (lame map or lame settings or have 2/8 players so you have to wait 30 mins for it to populate, etc).

I had the same problem last week, first time in a while (5 months) that I felt like playing QL, but the server list was absolutely horrific, all my desire to play was instantly gone.

I also have a pro account and still play the maps I want to when I want, but this rotation is working out a lot better than I thought it would when they started the idea. If I can't find a game real quick with a friend or group I end up playing something that I don't normally play with other people in public. It mixes things up and keeps it interesting.

Pub servers seem dead, but personally I am only seeing benefits because I don't remember the last time I played on a standard server...Seems like there are 2-3x more active premium servers, and like 10x less active standard

Map rotation should be done, atleast on 14 days basis. To make it more diverse, i think.

if there is no call vote make sure the server map pool only consist maps that are actually popular and players like to play it, currently many server is just wasted resources.

i quit the game because of that patch.

what they did to QL is simply unforgivable. their handling of this game through beta and up past release is just atrocious, to put it bluntly. it will go down as one of the biggest disasters in gaming history.

(actually, in reality, this whole thing was fumbled by id from the start. they clearly didn't care about quake as much as they should have, to put such incompetent people in charge of a groundbreaking project like QL in the first place. it starts at sync, and goes alllllll the way to the top in id, and most likely also zenimax.)

well said. and yea it is pretty sad how it all went down for QL. I can remember being such a wide eyed and naive newby in 2008 heh. Its kinda mind boggling just how badly it went, never wouldve imagined this 4 years ago tbh. But I hadn't really gotten to KNOW id as a developer until then or maybe I wouldn't of been so naive. :p Up until 2008/quakelive my battling with game developers was all vs Valve during the time they were patching tfc still :)

its small but they play a shit ton of pickup games spread out amongst 3 or 4 channels I think (most are private, one or two is public tho no doubt). Prob varies from chan to chan, you won't be good enuff to play in the priv ones and people are still prob jerks in the public ones but w.e. I don't think there is anymore public server activity so these pickups are the only way to play really now. There is def some low skillers playing in them so you wouldn't totally stick out.

I would guess that the attitudes would be a bit more accepting than ql but not by much, the game is 13 years old afterall :)

Don't know when the last time he played was, but the last time I did (back in early August), there wasn't any premium servers populated. Unless you mean private ones with altered settings. This is in midwest na.

5 players in a Premium CA server in NY
10 players in a Premium CA server in VA
1 player in a Premium CA server in TX
1 player in a Premium CA server in TX (yes, another)
8 players in a Premium CA server in LA
2 players in a Premium CA server in VA

Disclaimer : I can't see the potential T3 and below Premium CA servers.

My thoughts? The idea is not bad but the limitation is slightly too drastic. Maybe allow callvote nextmap and put 2 or 3 more maps in each game types.
