Constructive post in which you thoroughly describe issues and flaws and present suggetions and improvements - doing this on a private level (contacting the devs) is a nice move as well for quick questions.

I do not approve of a lot of things that QL team does, I have my own grudges with QL and frankly, the game does need a step into another direction if it ever wants to become bigger than it currently is - apart from that, people that know sync personally are aware that he's working his ass off for this game, he also jumped around like a maniac on qcon to make things go as smooth as possible.

I'd love to see some changes and more interaction with the community, but this is not the right approach and I don't think cpsin is a good messenger for our thoughts.

Sure they could change those things if they wanted to, don't believe they couldn't if they wanted and the thing is with them, they have no clue what's constructive and what's not. But it's hard to make it profitable by giving everything for free.
They're still updating the game, alas not on a frequent basis and maybe not every update is 10 new maps, lan support, gtv and other stuff, but as far as I know the QL team is really small atm with a very limited budget, you can't make miracles with no moola$$$

Doubt the budget is so low that you can't do anything.. They're updating it all the time and creating more bugs and implementing bad features and getting the money for it. If they made the user-end experience better (= game better) it would profit more. And that's very easy to make it significantly better and I don't think it would require much work at all..... I don't think there's anything better for us to do than make threads like this, another option is just to step back and watch ql suffocate. Yea the callvote thing I just can't get it, how does that help QL or id? Haven't thought of over-all strategy for them, just noted down all the major and minor flaws they must fix in order for ql not to fail

The idea with the callvote thing was to drive subscribers away from the standard servers to make them play on premium servers. A large part of the complains we've seen since the introduction of subscriptions was that premium servers are left behind since everyone plays on standard ones.

premium map change system isn't working well either and ffa/etc mods are unplayable because of that std mapvotingthingie

I've paid them 50 euros so far and doubt they're getting paid more than 25€/hr so in two hours they could already fix half a dozen of those minor flaws that piss you off by time

well, since carmack repeatedly made a point of staying independent from id, he finally sold out to zenimax.

it's a fair assumption that id was in some financial trouble and now with zenimax pulling the strings you can kiss funding for a project that can't turn profit good bye.

Weeks ago I thought the same, so I started playing other games, but that was a big mistake! It all ended up with me waiting for a hopeless pickup that never started for days. Despite actively searching I was only able to play one single competitive game during the whole fucking weekend. All that waiting while #tdmpickup had 3 pickups per hour and duel Premium servers was full.

This weekend I, and 3199 other viewers, have been watching pro Quakers compete for ~ 8000£ worth of prices in an epic duel and TDM tournament! How is other competitive FPS games going? Well 1.6 is officially DEAD (0 pro players), SM has 10 viewers and TF2, the FPS game under Quake in terms of popularity, has "only" 1000 viewers on big games.

Don't bring that Quake is dead shit. It's just as silly as the fact that SC2 players QQ that SC2 is now dead (their community really thinks so, lol).

Also, new faces and the small change in the map pool blows some fresh air into the small, but extremely strong, scene!

Syncerror has not given up on QL, clearly. Among other things his here regualry answering, which are quite often, dumb and meaningless questions.

One could say that id has given up on QL and gave up on the whole Quake series for that matter.

This. People seem to forget about q4 and how syncerror was very in touch with the community then. I don't think he deserves the blame.

I loved alot of raven games btw, but quake4 was just wut.

What bothered me about that whole deal was how, prior to the release of Quake IV, id Software kept emphasizing how involved they were with the development, that they were making sure it was done right, etc. That seems to be a forgotten bit of information, nowadays.

Then again, it was probably just marketing speak.

Syncerror really did great job with solving all the technical issues q4 had due to the failures of raven. Sadly it was too late as most people already moved over to different games..

But even in ql development it's not his fault that there is so minor man-power for the development.

What does any of this have to do with Syncerror? I don't know if any of you guys understand what a 'lead programmer' does, but it is not making marketing decisions, or managing server locations, or policing hackers in the game.
Every time Syncerror takes the time to come here to esr, or hang out in irc and answer to people's rude demands, he's doing it on his own time. That isn't what he's paid for.
Every time one of you slugs gets B& and goes on irc ranting and raving about how 'syncerror fukt me', that's not him. If he takes the time to speak to you about your ban, that's him using his own precious time to help out the community.
It wasn't syncerror that decided to institute a 'standard map rotation', that was marketing and management. ( hint: NOT HIS JOB ). Syncerror's job is to institute and facilitate whatever changes to the game design and marketing see fit. Yeah, he does other small things. But read again: MANAGING THE FUTURE DESIGN DIRECTION OF QUAKE IS *NOT HIS JOB*.
I feel sorry for him if anything, I don't know how many of you have ever worked in software dev, or web design, or graphic design, or any other field where you work for clients and for better or worse, have to make their inane wills into tangible artistic objects... but it can he hell. In essence, it's his job to program whatever dumb idea Zenimax might have about Quake.
I doubt he gets much of a say in the future direction of a game that he clearly at one point or another enjoyed. For all we know, he might disagree greatly with the new directions of QL, but considering he's a responsible adult, probably wants to keep a good job and doesn't hiss and foam on esr like everyone else does.
Although I find some of the programming changes to QL questionable, the netcode has been getting steadily worse, that's not entirely his fault either. Syncerror has given himself the most difficult position of being both programmer and community liason. I'm not here to kiss the guy's ass, just to correct a glaring oversight from the community here.
He actually deserves some respect, since if you were unfortunate enough to be banned by a real idiot ( Ordus ), and you went on irc to try and get some answers, Syncerror was kind enough to help a bunch of people out and give them a second chance when he certainly wasn't obliged to.
