The physics are awesome. The dash gives you tons of creative possibilites. I liked how the styles really contrasted there - some people flying around, others took the movement more straight forward, aggressive, defensive or sneaky - main point is that all seemed to work if done properly. Every weapon had it's best distance and if out of it the weapon got totally destroyed. The fast weaponswitch sucked tho but that is minor.

It is actually really fun to jump around because of autohop and it basically is really easy to get a complete noob getting decent speeds after 5 minutes. Autohop + bunnyhop + dash. You don't need to explain strafe and circlejump angles and stuff.

I liked how i could paint the map the color I wanted and make the cross and enemymodel contrast it.

Quake is miles better, has 1000x the players, lans and online tournaments every day, and quake dueling actually involves thinking. Also in quake people actually play mods with items instead of instagib and ca, like I posted the other day (0 warsow players on duel/ffa/tdm/ctf/etc. at peak hours globally).

Could write an essay and all but non existing positioning and randomness are a very compelling argument, both caused by the game being way too amateur made and not thought and coherent decisions (after lets say 8 years they can't still decide what to do with weapons, respawns, timing and walljumping. That's absurd).

Also both are solid reasons why their "top duel players" are worthless in quake, and as we know "quakers" dominate every single fast paced fps game ever released (including warsow, voo) until the next thing comes and they roflstomp there once again.

Not really. This goes more with CPM than Warsow because of how the weapons work. They are harder to hit but on hit make high dmg which means you need good positioning to do dmg. +they kept the player movement acceleration the same as opposed to cpm where they made it harder to hit via speed and kept the weapons hit easy.

The weapon balance may feel funky, but I had more fun with the game than any Quake game before after I figuredd out how situation specific the weapons actually are.

I can't say how WsW could evolve with some proper competition, but I kinda feel that with right sized maps and motivated players it could evolve further than Quake.

And yes, the pros suck there because of no competition and you should play some duels past the 1.0 version.

While the game has some potential, if somehow 4m people started playing it out of nowhere and could go back in time 10 years from now, It took the devs like 8 years to finally remove strong ammo and more or less balance weapons. There won't be 8 years more to remove walljumping as I heard crizis is retiring from the team (him or some other big name out of the hundreds of devs).

The walljump isn't that bad because it has a cooldown (should be even longer maybe) and while being hit you can't use it. I really like the concept that you can plan an attack with using the dash at a certain key moment - whole another element. And that rl madness can be countered if you're patient enough to learn the game. I always like to bring the fly analog where you are centre map and he is flying around and you just pick him up everywhere.

Anyways, I think they screwed up the marketing with the 1.0 release. If anything it should have been on steam at least and with proper match making at the very moment.

But ah whatever - could have would have. Lets wait for reborn.

They reached their full potential anyway, as the 5 remaining players have been advertising warsow for years (reddit like 90 times, gog, several forums, universities, lans, cds, etc.) and 1.0 was promoted all over the interwebz.

This isn't a "could have would have" situation (like QL is): GoG and 1.0 confirm newcomers simply don't like warsow (reviews and players leaving immediately) and as we know we "quakers" don't like it enough as well, so no matter how much it is advertised as being better than free french fries it'll remain dead like it is regardless of steam and other efforts.

And the SM way of attracting players (hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes) shouldn't happen too because the man in charge does not believe in prize money.

edit: just to be on the safe side I checked both the server list and the master server, and like every single time there's absolutely no one in the world playing a mod with items rofl: the usual ca, instagib, race and bomb brave warsowians (in that order of players).

Same goes for reddit and others. It's the same 5 players promoting, spamming and overhyping the game all over the place, and it's not me going all raythenoob on this because it's posted on the warsow forums that they are mental about this and have been doing the same at other times.
A funny one I remember is they were trying to put wsw in one famous french gaming site so they started spamming votes for months by changing IPs rofl. Actually if you take a look at who's creating warsow threads and posts here constantly it's no more than 5 users.

if uve played wsw cpm should be relatively easy to learn. just keep in mind that the cpm community is fairly polarized in terms of experience and skill level. theres relatively old school players who are all fairly good and then newer players who are just learning. so if u play duels u are likely to get raped in a few games.

Yes, it is, strategical and tactical, if you want the highest kills per minute ratio. When you watch k1llsen play ztn or aero against noobs you will see a very clear presentation of it. It wont have much depth but it's there.

There is a difference if you're just running around and raping or following a system/structure. As i told, it depends if you're going for max frags (for example) or not.

The depth comes in how your tactics are challenged. Against noobs you do not need to change anything and can milk the same concept. If you get really used to playing a certain way it doesn't mean that there aren't any tactics anymore, they are just onedimensional.

i know cpm sucks from ql player's pov, it's obvious, but i 'grew' up my game in this mod so it's like I can't be fucked to play another one, there's no real reason why i would change, for example I don't stand a chance to be in the top, so fuck it cos I won't get to enjoy the going to lans and no traveling with good excuse.
If there was a bigger game inside this genre, at the scale of LoL and sc2, I'd be playing it for sure even if that one was the worst for me.

I think that's where warsow failed massively quality wise. Every single aspect is way too amateur made therefore they don't know what they want in the game in first place (weapon balance and strong ammo are a prime example), then what's good and what's wrong.

Throwing every idea in is as retarded as removing them all: in warsow's case "more" actually makes it a lot simpler. Then there's the millions of little and major annoyances, the moments you facepalm and so on. In the end it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, like why I'm playing this instead of QL or cpm, which is one of the reasons warsow literally died the moment QL was released (the other one is it has 0 players). All quake clones are worse than what they try to copy.

their marketing lacks focus. they needed a huge surge of new players and incentives for people to play it (kinda like QL had at first), but just like QL it was free for public already in a halfassed state, otherwise known as beta, and people dvindled away from it for various reasons. just as QL it wont have the same initial freshness factor ever again. my point is that neither of these games have potential anymore. reborn on the other hand.

Reborn will be good/awesome because there's knowledgeable people in charge, both as devs and as players. In warsow on the other hand...

I don't like comparing cpm with wsw because both share the same problems lol, but cpm stood the test of time better ("better" as in 50 players against 0, 50 more playing defrag with cpm physics and every quake player loving cpm frag/defrag movies yet not playing anyway).
QL is the better comparison because that's the direct cause of warsow's demise. There are threads on their forums about that.

I don't think QL's problem is the community or even the core game itself but its developer. 0 advertisement (which isn't the case with warsow as that's all over the place and failed anyway), destroyed their 2 opportunities to shine (network issues that didn't let people play because the absurd queues before joining quakelive.com. On the other hand in wsw the devs itself upload the servers), not enough use of q3 community-made content and 0 usage of the in-browser advantages to this day, decent matchmaking and other features every current game has, the little yet big things like the server browser showing half the servers with the default settings, etc.

Even when being severely limited by id software, the community has done so much anyway but all that is invisible to regular players because it's not on the website. Lots of great tutorials (2gd's are the best for beginners), scripts and utilities (greasemonkey, spawns, huds, configs), lans and online tournaments, streams, qlranks, etc. etc. and esr itself.
If id software just let the community get in charge for 2 seconds they would have twice the active players and the game would be 5x better...like all their prior games (vanilla q1, q2, q3, q4 multiplayer were all mediocre at their release); but then again that's nothing against QL's wasted potential (QL was bigger than LoL at some point and I think with the correct decisions it could be right now the most active fps game, but they fucked up massively) so this genre now relies on 2gd working on the game instead of drinking vodka (ohshit), which in the end is the same as the community stepping up once again.

edit: and on reborn, why isn't there an indiegogo fundraiser yet. If it has decent rewards (like the purepwnage movie) I'd give them $500 if not more.

There is no scene at all for this game in NA last time I checked. The only active servers I could find at the time were race servers. Every once in a while maybe a CA game would pop up. I think I idled an empty duel server for about 30 minutes and never got an opponent.

I'm old and casual these days, if I have to get on IRC and find somebody to play with I'm just going to go play something else instead.

I love warsow and play it with my gf from time to time. Small communities makes me happy ("everyone knows everyone") but warsow's is a bit too small :/

When I want to play warsow I have to play the gamemode that the only active server is playing. Some hours only CA is active and then I can't play FFA. Duel in warsow takes too long before, or even if, you find a player who you enjoy playing with.

In the long run, warsow is casual (short term fun) and I enjoy FFA the most. Compared to Quake, there is no competition (long term fun) in warsow at all.

I'm not a super great Quake player (started with QL), so I'm curious as to why you think this.

There is competition in Quake. You feel good when you notice how you improve. Warsow, to me, lacks that feeling. That could be due to the small community. You basically have nobody to compete against.

To me, Quake is more like a lifestyle, a hobby, than a game. Warsow is "just a (really fun and great) game" that you can play when you want to kill some time.

CTF is pretty active, if you are willing to play pickups. CA never was dead really but the gametype is broken because of maps. TDM, hmm there is some 2vs2 here and there but not much more than that.

I get about 20 fps in Warsow compared to the average 90-100 of QL.

I like too. I have played it when it was still in beta... I know lot of changed.. If we didn't have quake, for sure I would play it. Or we had weekend cups and 2-4 lan events in a year.

Love the art style, it's my favourite of any game. The new account registration stuff is great, it's deathmatch gaming, wall-jumps are cool too.

Hate the quick switch weapons, and how fast paced the game is personally. The sounds don't feel like they have any 'umpf' for me, small community, no competition (I originally started playing Assault Cube and Sauerbraten, somehow Warsow is smaller).

Wish the game was more popular.

I currently play Sauerbraten (coming from Quake, I'm already in the top 10% of the community after playing only 1/5 of the time of most other people), I still can't believe Warsow's community is smaller, it's a much better game.

Warsow is actually a very good game but some things are annoying me.

And quakelive with the many updates it had is now a very balanced game, with almost everything you need for competition.

i've played warsow alot over a big time period and this is the conclusion that i came to.

warsow's big innovation was the dash+wj which as you can deduce from the comments around here, is a really gratifying addition, its the reason most people still play i think - its also quite clear from the popular gametypes (instaCA, CA and Race) that this is what keeps people coming back.

the rest is basically quake3 though, and whilst the movement is brilliant fun, fitting it into the more classic quake gametypes and map design philosophy is a bit like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole - the simple fact is that in these respects the movement creates some gameplay issues that most dont feel have a place in a 'competitive' game - the response to this has almost invariably been to tone down or remove movement abilities in certain scenarios (such as when having taken damage you can no longer really walljump for x amount of time).

personally i think warsow's awesome movement on its own warrants further development and then it could have carved out a niche of its own rather than having to share a niche with about 5 different very similar games. but if that had been the case you guys probably wouldnt be talking about then it would no longer be a pure quake derivative.

I know one of the main reasons I play Warsow is because it runs quite well on Mac OS X, unlike QL, which allows a lot of my friends with Macs to play it with me.

The Warsow developers are very open about being tired of working on the game and dealing with the community, so don't expect much fleshing out unless it comes from the community itself.

First the game play needs work - I'm not talking about tweaks but rather a significant redesign, the movement, weapons and maps need to mesh together better. I also think the quakeness needs to be less obvious - wh- a rethink of how the weapon set is organised would be a good start imo.

2nd you need to make new player induction easier. As it stands there is nothing, new players get dropped in at the deep end without even any indication of how the movement works, let alone giving players a setting in which they can practice (defrag maps dontI count).

Couldn't explain it better really. The movement is really fun, but the competitive gametypes are not. That's why most people on Warsow play race, I guess...

All the guys I used to play with and which were in the scene back in the 0.3 - 0.5 days stopped playing and the community was the loveliest part of the game for me... that's why I stopped. Also I don't enjoy playing duels in Warsow anymore. :S

I very enjoy the pace of the game and the almost infinite skill potential of the game and try to improve everyday.

1.0 has not seen players stay due to UI having major issues
1.02 fix the most critical ones but server browser is still funky

when quakelive appeared some ego player who were no competition anymore to new generation of players just left for more slow paced games such battlefield3,LoL,quakelive,...

if u are old & pro u can very well be satisfacted with current warsow activity :

- idle #warsow #warsow.pickup and your national warsow federation channel minimum

- find/form a team

- play all cups

the future of lan events in warsow is in private events made by players themself (average age of players is 25yo)

I see this game as a CPM knockoff with annoying graphics and sound, also it doesnt adds anything to the DM genre that would make it interesting for me, the walljump/dash is just another unnecessary gimmick. As long as theres anything else to play i'll stay away from it.

I think that Necrophag1st described it best when he said that gun fights in warsow is the #1 reason why people are disenfranchised with the game. It's gotten progressively worse with the update, since now that we have an over-buffed plasma gun and rocket launcher that kind of dominate the weapon arsenal, in exchange for the riot gun being brought in line.

On top of that there's not much of a scene going on right now. Nothing lasts forever, and the activity of warsow falls in line perfectly with that sentiment.

I can't say I didn't get anything out of playing in it, it was/is a fun game that even now is proof of how much an indie development group can acheive with the right initiative. I think that Warsow is a wonderful game, and is one of the best games in the arena FPS genre. Opinions of me from Quake diehards be damned, I really enjoy playing this game. The graphics are, in my opinion, fairly unique, and I love the movement physics. It honestly saddens me when I tell people about this game and they throw shit in my face and say it's bad that I like this -- that makes me uncomfortable and insecure. Then again, if I really love this game, why should I care what others think? I should play what I have fun with. And I have fun with Warsow.

its not ql or ut but the game did introduce something different and its the destructible environment that makes it stand out from the lot. battlefield atmosphere is impressive thanks to great gfx and awesome audio. no wonder its popular.

People always see it as either or, I play both Warsow and Quakelive, also started a bit with Quakeworld as well. No need to be limited to only one game.

So true! Unless you are a pro player or want to become one you can play as many games as you want. If one of the two mentioned above is true you should stick to the game you want to be good at, because playing other games at the same time could fuck up your main game. But 90% of ESR aren't even close to top 64 of QL so why bother with sticking to QL only?

I dislike the sounds, they're irritating to listen for long periods at a time. And it feels a lot like there's some kind of delay left over from the q2 engine, in how shots fired are handled. I haven't played it in a long time, so they may have changed that, but that's what I think about when I'm considering playing warsow again.

why not Painkiller HD? better graphics with same easy movement (press jump to gain speed) + a cool singleplayer

PK is cool aswell, but suffers from massive netcode problems plus strange physics imo (you can do some absolutely retarded shit in it).

To keep you updated, warsow devs said the game is never going to be on steam, steam greenlight and similar. Since it's been everywhere else, promoted by its brave 5 players, now we can say it is not only dead but also it'll never be alive.

we know you dont like warsow, but is your glee at its relative unpopularity got anything to do with the dismal failure of quakelive?

you quakers got everything you ever dreamt of: a high profile (there was plenty of promotion and hype in the gaming media - id is the granddaddy of FPS gaming and q3 was seen as their MP masterpiece) F2P rerelease of quake 3 with modern features. yet somehow it never managed to break even let alone get close to the 'millions of players' as imagined by carmack.

warsow is by no means perfect and decidedly amateurish, but they have got some stuff right obviously - the movement systems keep players playing, the engine is very smooth, functional and decently good looking enough (thanks to jal and vic's work on the prediction and rendering), the website profiles and ingame profiles are now connected (with lots of neat little additions such as linked server demos to game records etc) and a quite brilliant plug and play gameplay and gametype modification system. all this from a bunch of amateurs with no experience of professional game development. thats a pretty credible achievement to me, despite its other failings.

So you prefer to play the allegedly worse quake clone instead of the proper thing based on romantic reasons? BTW it is not going to improve with developers (finally) leaving.

And that's assuming there's someone to play with, because you know no one does and that you all did everything that could have been done. QL easily has 1000x more players and activity even in its demise.

the thing that made me start and keeps me playing warsow is the movement.

i can have my fill of duels whenever i want and can participate in teamgames if the fancy takes me most of the time.
