It's a niche genre.
If you want to succeed in FPS genre you need to do one of the following; Either you have patriotic US soldiers kicking ass of some <insert political bad guy here> or just something bland, uninteresting very limited as far as sandbox gaming goes, generic FPS with experience points and RPG elements. Oh, and HP regen, that's a must.
Come to think of it, maybe rage should have sold more copies than it actually did.

I dont see how, not after doom 3 bfg, to release a mp game like that, they would have known everyone had unplayable pings. the lack of options etc. You cant even vote maps in game, you run a server while you play, no search by country etc. Nothing. Honestly I never seen anything so bad.....
So it looks like idsoftware consciously choose to release bad things like that, to me, that is like selling a car with no reverse.
Let me just check, I will jump on a server quickly and take a screenshot, let me see....
I cant, I appear to be the only one in the world wanting to play at the moment so there are no games to join, but then you cant blame them, becuase its unplayable thanks to idsoftware not setting up a few dedicated servers to give the game a chance.
They deserve to fail cos even a retard could tell you what is wrong, so for a dev studio to be evaded means they do not care, or are incapable.
Either way, its not a positive sign for the future...

this. it was meant to be a triple a singleplayer game. all doom games (for basically forever focused on the singleplayer), I mean shit ya sure ppl played the original doom games in multiplayer but that was back when most ppl didn't even have a good enough internet. same for doom3 and doom3bfg. neither game focused on multiplayer, which is hilarious because id threw a lot of money at it at quakecon

the game has over 15 maps and 5 modes in its mp game, maps by threewave and has a big fat "multiplayer" option on the front screen, how you can possibly sit there and say its not a mp game makes you look absurd.
No one is moaning about the subletities here, its the fact that you cant play a game, or use any of the weapons to any useable effect.
And the fact that idsoftware would have known this, and still released it, that to me highlights a major issue with regards to trust and quality control.
it's not that absurd when you're able to remember stuff that happened some time ago, like id software stating before the initial release "don't expect doom 3 to be a mp game, we do ql and raven does q4".

The original doom 3 IS a mult player game, not a great one, but more than playable. Even now I can find a server with 50 ping and have some games.
For god sake there was over 250k in prize money awared to players of that game.

You would physically have to sit down and say how I can make this game more shit, to do what they did. They ripped sections out they had already coded in.
You are judging it on what idsoftware said 8 years ago, I enjoyed many aspects of doom 3 in spite of that, What I am saying is, 8 years on, they made it unplayable by taking stuff that is core to enjoying a game.
Things like searching by location, being able to start a dedicated servers, voting a map in game are all basic things they had in the original, by removing them, they have ruined it 110%.

i hate to break it with you, but doom 3 bfg largely came to light because of carmack's recent obsession with 3d displays and more importantly head-mounted ones.
they only ruined the game for people like you and you're going to be pretty much alone here, everyone else never cared about the mp part anyway.
its just a way to kill time between different titles, since they had a guy (ONE PERSON) working on doom 4 prior to finishing rage, that is probably the only reason for them even making doom3bfg. its a nice product, but a decade too late tbh. im just praying for doom 4 not sucking dick cause ive actually played the doom series since like 6 or 7 yrs of age and looking forward to hopefully a good title, dont care if its mp or sp (but likely will be sp focused, just like its predecessors).

Things that idsoftwre have been doing for over 20 years and things they did in 2004 with the original doom 3. But left out here, and there was me thinking they were going to polish it, they did, but with a wirebrush.
The game has many multiplayer modes, DMDUELCTF maps by Threewave, I am not buying this is not a mp game.
It clearly is, but its unplayable, you add things to games over time, you dont take out core aspects of it.
I used Doom 3 BFG as its the latest game idsoftware have released and they have gone backwards in mp, so for me, in my view, this is not a good sign for the future as the game is virtually unplayable and that has NOTHING to do with its original design spec, this is them taking out things.
Since then, there have been flawed arguments against what I said, while nobody still cannot tell me why they removed key features they coded in 8 years ago and made the game worse.
Have you not had enough data from id, the last great quake type mp game they did was in 1999 over 13 years ago, since then year on year, you have all fooled yourself and every time its disappointment.

just to inform you on something regarding the xbox doom 2 port. They fucked the multiplayer/coop even more on that one. They used oldschool pre-internet gaming p2p networking or something AKA HUGE input lag when playing online.
dno why they did it, it's not that it's still doom2.exe?? and sourceports solved it years ago i could imagine.
what im trying to say is, doom 3 bfg missing content or features present in an earlier release of the same game, is not new for id.
last really good game was quake one ...
