I'm a low-skilled Premium player. I play casually on public, sometimes pickup or very often with friends in a Freeze Tag oriented community called Chill.
There are tons of big communities like this with players ranging from Pro to Standard where everyone is welcome. It's all casual, and fun. Mostly low skilled players, like you, and there are no unnamed pros slumming the crap out of you, because you know everyone.

It's a common misbelief that only professional/competitive players pay for the game.

If you would have some decent social skills and some common sense, you could join a community like this.

But first, I advice mental therapy.

I don't like freeze tag. I want to compete in CA clan matches. Its why i stopped trying to scrim ca in clans. Cause all these clans just would put their best top t4 players against my t3 clan and demand freeze tag.

Probably you are tier1/2 in those so you can't see tier3/tier4 servers rofl. though all I'm seeing say that are lower than my skill level (grey) with the exception of dkt's (yellow).

Also remember to use the "all populated" filter so it shows full servers, otherwise it doesn't even when you can connect as a spec or wait a bit in the worst case scenario (*id software*), and tick premium as sometimes it shows regularly not shown servers (*syncerror*, since he doesn't want to add a "next" button in case of many servers so he chose to not show them by default).

This is one of the reasons the game feels dead to 99% of players, others being not joining tournaments (some are advertised in QL news on its forum, fb and twitter, that no one reads), organizing scrims (irc and others are 2 clicks away and it works, though it'd be very nice having an embed client on ql.com), not knowing about streams and events (adroits ended one day ago and dh:w is in one month, though they aren't advertised anywhere in the game unlike LoL for example) and so on. You fall in all those categories rofl.
Someone said non subscribers can't see all premium servers but that's way too retarded even for id software.

Right now it is 3 ctfs (1 premium, spawned by tac() exposed_ and it's been up and populated since the last post. The other 2 are standard and were spawned by fast lash and 3S thegreen3astard) and 5 duels (3 premium), plus one freezetag, one attack&defend and millions of CAs. Obviously I'm just counting the ones that have a decent amount of people playing, not the ones with 3 players, and all public servers.
All that means there's more than enough populated servers that aren't CA even on a monday afternooon in NA, which is one of the worst case scenarios (In europe there are over 50 populated duel servers right now rofl, monday evening).

and since you are a ca-only retard, right now there are 7 populated CA servers in NA, 3 of them premium. All have over 4 people playing, and 5 are full or almost are.

Stop spreading misinformation. That's the very worst case scenario (monday afternoon NA) yet you can still play your silly mod, but you go all over the interwebz saying the game is unplayable. I'd bet you that on sunday I can find 20 populated ca servers in NA.

Quake (the game from 1996) was intended as multiplayer title, originally only as LAN game (similar to previous id Software title Doom and games based on it, like Heretic, that was a blast on LAN!), then id released an incompatible QuakeWorld client to allow comfortable Internet gaming in 1997. First game that could be comfortably played on a modem (as opposed to T3/E3 connection). That was all done by design.

Also, they sponsored competitions back then, just to put more emphasis on the competitive nature of player vs player combat.

It was 3 years later when they released Q3A, game without a normal single player campaign. Something really rare even today.

So please don't tell me Quake being multiplayer was an accident.

Despite playing quake for years and years he's still pretty shitty and stuck at tier 3 at best. Everyone who was new to quakelive surpassed him in every way possible so he turns into the mindset of "Everyone in this game is a hacker alias" to give an himself an excuse as to why he sucks.

It's not true.

GPUs are good for highly parallelizable instructions, and specifically those that use floats. They use hundreds, if not thousands of cores running at a relatively low clockspeed to do this.

CPUs are for serial processing, and general purpose calculations. They make use of relatively few cores running at a very high clockspeed.

Not all instructions are easily paralleled, if at all possible. It is analogous to making a peanut butter sandwich. One guy can do it fairly quickly, two could do it faster, 4 perhaps even faster, 5 maybe, but that's pretty much it. Any more and there's not enough for the rest to do, and if they tried it would actually slow things down.

Sometimes instructions have to go in a certain order. If we assign one person to the first piece of bread, another to the peanut butter, another to the jelly, another to the other piece of bread, and one guy to transfer the project between them, we still have the issue of order. Person two cannot apply the peanut butter until there's a slice of bread brought by person one to apply it on.

In this analogy, persons two, three, four and five must wait until it is their turn to act. It is because of this that the "task" is fairly serial in nature. Despite the holes in this analogy, I hope the point comes across.

There are many such types of instructions that the GPU does poorly at, in fact you could even say that it is slow at most types of calculation. The way common software is programmed is not in a way that a GPU could accelerate, and designing it to make use of the GPU is often difficult and potentially even unfeasible since there is a delay for transfers between the two processors.

The reason you see GPU-style accelerators in supercomputers is due to that what most supercomputers are used for is exactly these kinds of parallelizable problems. You won't find a supercomputer without a boat load of general purpose CPU cores though.

As time goes on, the CPU and the GPU are becoming more and more similar in their feature-set (GPGPU for example). Many have been predicting for a long time that they will end up completely merged. For now though, they are still different animals.

Circumcision is more of a cosmetic procedure. The health benefits are very small for losing your frenulum, foreskin and running the risk of developing keratinization of the glans. I think it should be a personal decision. Circumcising an infant is wrong, in my opinion.

I knew someone well from the USA before and was told they did it for cosmetic reasons to their son. It was nothing purvey, there was just a discussion about the pros cons in the media at the time and they were quite open.

They had a child in the UK but intended on going back to the USA to live, so they said they choose to have him circumcised over here for no other reason than he would fit better in at school over there because nearly everyone else did.

I'm gonna answer in fewer words so you can read it and not say I try to look smart : GPU are good to make loads of non-interdependent operations (like highly parallel algorithms often ran on supercomputers or ...graphic stuff) and suck for "step-by-step" operations., which CPU are good for.

Your OS and all of your applications short for games and video processing software use only "step-by-step" stuff. Programming to make it run on a GPU would be much, much harder and the result would be worse than on a CPU.




EDIT - As for quantum computers : it's a very cool subject and there,s some research done on it at my university but it is pretty irrelevant on this conversation. Well, there's a link in that most of the stuff you need to do on your computer would run better on a standard CPU than on a quantum computer (at least at the stages they are now). Some problems have solutions with a better algorithmic complexity and we will probably see some quantum "super-computers" some day to solve them. If this technology ever makes it to the typical customer and it will probably be on a specialized card like how GPU started. Also, just like today with GPU, not every programmer will have the knowledge to work with it correctly.

Titan is a technically interesting machine. It’s part of a new trend to use graphics processing chips to do some of the calculations. only reason its still a "hybrid" doing "some" of the calculations is cause of politics in my opinion. eventually the cpu will be phased out dude. to deny this is to deny evolution exists as well. do you believe we dropped from space as humans to this planet as well? lmao..... the cpu will become as minor in power as the cmos dude...the gpu has way more potential.

Let's say there are two different classes of instructions, type 1 and type 2.

A CPU can do both, but it is slow at type 2.

A GPU is terrible at type 1, to the point that it practically can't even do it, but is super awesome at type 2.

Both types are required for modern computing.

In the future the CPU and GPU may end up merged, but to call one or the other obsolete right now is completely incorrect.

Intel is one of the world leaders in technological innovation. To say they aren't pushing new CPU technology is absurd. See Ivy Bridge and Haswell.

AMD is also pushing new technology, although their bulldozer CPU wasn't a success, they've made many corrections with piledriver.

IBM continues their trend with high end risc chips, the Power 7+ being released recently. They also make a "balls to the wall" monster CPU for main frames called the z196. It runs at 5.2 GHz, and has a special 196 MB L4 cache.

Meanwhile CPUs in the mobile world are in constant flux and are making constant progress. ARM is a big player there, as well as AMD, Intel, Samsung, and numerous others.

There is no contradiction, I was arguing against your comment that the CPU is obsolete.

The Titan has 18,688 AMD Opteron 6274 16-core CPUs for general purpose calculations, which is almost 300,000 CPU cores.

What's difficult is to try and run those type 1 calculations on a GPU. It's infinitely easier and more efficient to use this 'hybrid' approach, where the CPU handles the type 1 calculations, and the GPU handles the type 2s. I was using this as a clear-cut example the CPU is absolutely necessary in this day and age.

As for programming, while it's not as easy as "normal" programming done on a single system image with a handful of cores, it's far from impossible. Supercomputers have a rich history as this point and software strategies have had time to mature.

I think the part you're missing is how there are different types of calculations, one that GPUs are good at, and one that CPUs are good at. Both are required, so one or the other cannot be said to be 'obsolete'.

Nvidia makes GPUs, Intel CPUs. These are their primary markets.

Semi-recently Nvidia moved into the HPC (supercomputer) market with Tesla accelerators. Recently Intel jumped in as well with their Xeon Phi cards.

Intel is also going to be competing with Nvidia in the GPU market with their integrated graphics in Haswell being about fast enough to rival some Nvidia cards. So far integrated graphics hasn't been anything close to a threat.

I would say that all and all, they are still separate, but just starting to contest one another. It isn't the same market yet, but in the future it looks like it very well could be.

What you're missing here is that a GPU that does the calculations of a CPU is no longer a GPU, it's a GPGPU (General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit).
