haha i think it might be cause marvel is flashing images and 1 millisec mixup's. at an non-fighting event like ipl they might not find the right crowd for it =)
this won't mean much in terms of hype.. the completely sterile environment and esports over-production castrates any fun out of fighting game events
the only way to salvage this is by flying a great amount of Japanese/international players.
the only major problem with the fighting scene is it has only one noteworthy event every year. If they pushed the idea of having 4 to 6 majors every year then it could compete with starcraft and dota2.
e-sports wise. Sure fighting games have lots of viewers all the time and there are lots of events globally, but they aren't like sc (bw and 2) and dota2 in terms of being up there.
EVO is immense, but they have the potential to do more than one a year and right now that requires more hype than organization/players/peopleinterested because all that is there.
SBO isn't what it used to be and never was much to begin with.. its only merit it was that it existed during rough times for the scene and it had a good production. it's more of a game show at this point.
in the last 3 years it was progressively worse as a tournament.. this year they had the whole event in open air, with so much sun glare on the monitors you needed your friends to make shade for you so you can see the game. not to mention the drama with international qualifiers that weren't recognized once people arrived at the main event, flying there for nothing.
also the prizes were always something symbolic, hiding behind "gambling" laws in Japan that can be circumvented, but they never bothered to do that.
Daigo & others said they won't bother to attend the event in the future.
They aren't that far behind SC2 and Dota 2 (excluding The International) in terms of viewers for big events and, depending on how the community reacts to having SF on the IPL, they might find their niche in e-sports events. At least they don't have to compete against LoL.
