Windows 8? I've described the exact same problem on #quakelive and in my Windows 8 thread. Still haven't find a decent solution, however, setting cl_timenudge to 0 from -20 did help a lot. But still not sufficient enough, when I stream it returns.

so, do you think that quakelive is unplayable with windows 8 ?

It's playable if you don't stream.

try different browser to make sure it's purely hardware issue

try setting quake's priority to high in task manager. and maybe try 120 fps with 120hz. one of these worked for me.

this problem has happened with prism, chrome, and firefox

i dont see how it could be a hardware issue if my framerate is locked at 125 non stop, and even when i lock at 120, the shit still happens but its even more noticeable / more drastic.

i played with my refresh rate at 85 for a long time and even then it did this shit.

so far the only thing ive done that made any difference at all was delete my qzconfig and repconfig so they get created again and that resolved the issue for like 3 days but comes back everytime.


its really annoying having to deal with this. it's impossible to make smooth mouse movements when my whole screen starts to look like jfelipe1

I don't know if this helps much, but if it was me who had this problem, the first thing I would check is my CPU settings (clock step-down thingy), and my harddrive drivers. It may as well be the motherboard itself which happened to me once. (defective board)
Do a memtest on your RAM and update bios. Hmm.. it could be your network card as well... On a second thought, throw the whole computer out the window and buy a new one, just to be safe.

bios is updated
board is brand new
memtest shows no errors, and no reason to believe ram is bad, no BSODs, no excessive memory usage
CPU usage is less than 80% as a standard when i play quake, and there is no clock step down as with newer chips

the only thing that i considered out of your post was a hard drive issue, but i have quake running from my 2nd HDD, which is a much better HDD than the one windows boots from, and it also has my page file on it.

have you overclocked your mouse? Because when I had a wmo on the default 125hz polling rate the screen would look like it was lagging when you move the mouse around.

500hz polling rate as opposed to 125, but ive had this issue since before i started messing with all of that

cpu or graphics card overheating? cleaning the fans of them might help

Ok so when this happens, does it stay that way? Or does it return to normal? How long does it last?

Does it happen more frequently at some times than others?

Does your display refresh rate change any, like if you check via its OSD.

sometimes it lasts through the entirety of a map. it has not once happened during pregame warmup. sometimes it will flicker momentarily and again a moment later.

display refresh is 120hz at 640x480, framerate never drops below 125 on any map or gametype i play, even corrosion CA 7v7.

Is this an LCD or a CRT?

Does the same problem occur if you use a different resolution? Say its native if you use an LCD?

Do you use autorecording? Ie. cg_autorecord 1 or 3? Does not recording reduce the incidence of the problem?

I used cg_autoaction 3 but i disabled it and it made no difference.

try looking for an additional software which can consume your video card resources: run the process explorer from sysinternals.com (there is a redirect from that site to some hard to remember link at microsoft.com), look your gpu usage graph, add gpu resource usage column, sort by it, try to look at it when ql is on and when it is off.

once i had a program which used 50% of gpu resources and 0% of cpu. i was very confused by that. but it was running constantly, so i got 125/60 fps flipping all the time, many times per second.

I know it seems like a stupid question but can you see it happen if you play a demo back of it happening? Try setting hard drives to never power off in power options because ive had a extra hd cause stutters in other games from spinning up. If your sure the config wash fixed it last time post the current config and someone will probably see something wrong.

if it happens in demos at all, it's not noticeable, and i spend a good deal of time looking through my demos.

i have quake and QLprism running from my second HDD as it is, because it's a better hard drive. the power options in my control panel are already set to never power off. ive got everything on this pc streamlined as best i could, so the majority of the settings anyone will know about will have already been changed.

Got postprocess on? Had the same issue like you after i installed some sort of ATI Tray Tools or something like this. Couldn`t get rid of it, so i disabled postprocess and it`s working fine now.

i do use post processing because it helps give the models a bit more pop from the backgrounds but i suppose ill disable that as well and give it a shot.

Yes, you are right, but I managed to get the maps and models look like with postprocess 1. I don`t know why i got this stuttering problem, but it was the same you have: constant 125 fps and 120 hz, but jittering like shit.

i deleted my config and did a cvar_restart, rebuilt my config with another config as a starting point, played 1 game perfectly with no lag at all, smooth to the point that i was getting motion sickness.

after that one game, the map didnt even change, my ping went up 15ms and the lag started again. lagometer shows the green bar with lots of little spikes consistently and gaps every now and then.

in a VA server, my ping went from 49ms to 69ms in the span of one game. i can play comfortably at 69 ping if it's steady, but the spiking i feel is what's killing me.

are there any commands i can use to sort of keep my ping at the high side of normal to avoid the spiking? sort of like capping your framerate 2-3 frames lower than your max to avoid the instability.

Are you on a wireless lan?

One thing you can try is lowering your rate to say 16000, it seems to stabilize things a bit sometimes. Other than that you'll have to try to find where the spikes are occurring. If they're occurring at your computer, router, modem, or early network then there's a good chance that it can be fixed.

Otherwise the situation is grim.

i was using rate 16000 up until i recently started changing my config a lot. i thought i had my rate set at 25000, but it was set at 16000, so i thought that may have been the source of the lag i was getting. it turns out that wasnt the problem at all.

im hooked directly to my modem. also, why do i only get this issue in quakelive and not in any other games?

even games that give me less than 60 fps still feel smoother than quake does when i get this laggy shit.

By the way there is no point to com_maxfps 120, it will just display at 125.

As it turns out com_maxfps still only takes integer values of 1000/x, so that means 125, 111, 100, and so on. It always rounds up, so even 112 will be 125.

Sync put a cap on cg_drawFPS that makes it not display a value that is greater than com_maxfps, which obfuscates what maxfps is actually being shown.

This can be verified with fraps fps meter.
