- ql netcode is pretty nice to me (you can dodge hitscan better with lower ping, you can aim projectiles better; you can aim hitscan well enough with higher ping)
- from 24-55 there's not much difference at all
- from 60 ping on projectiles and the game in general gets slightly weird
- it's still possible to hit decent with over 100 ping on non-pro dodgers

I have played with a lot of different pings in q3 osp/cpma and ql. in ql untill ~50 ping, it's realy good, after it get's realy worse.. even 5 ms can make a bid different... but as he told, it's possible to play untill 100 ms..
ofcors less ping is better. 0 ms ftw. So 0-25 super, 25-50 good, 50-60 everage , 60-100 good vs a lot lower skilled players.

its possible to get some fun up to 100 ping yes.

but ppl can forget about playing serious duel and tdm in the 75-100 ping range unless you have amazing spam, +back skills, and rarely do any mistake. this goes for duel, they can still forget about tdm :D

ctf on the other hand is doable up to 100, you will want to claw your eyes out but its not hopeless.

with a 30 ping you can really rock with the lg. I rarely see a 30 ping but when I do it feels so good using the lg. Ive had low ping at times seem like high ping though, maybe because of packet loss? Indianapolis is one of them servers my ping seems good but the lag feels bad. It looks like i get some bad pl to indy. I try to avoid playing the game with over 80 ping as It seems to become unfair because i cant use one of the strongest weapons the lg.

Fucking routing destroyed QL for me. Playing on 55-60 ping to de/nl now, whereas I played with 30-35 for year(s) and it's quite a big difference for me.

I hit a lot less, I don't feel as confident, the game feels laggy and it's basically shit. On Polish servers (ping 10-15) I feel like a fish in a water. Felt the same with de/nl with 35 ping as well.

Now due to fucking broken routing it's horrible.

Plus I'm not buying premium again, can't say I enjoy the game as I used to, ping fucks everything up for me.

Still, youre lucky to have those polish servers.
The lowest ping I can get is about 50ms (.de). Its worth mentioning that my usual ping to anywhere in Germany (except for those shitty i3d servers) is 20-30ms.

Its really a brilliant idea having just a single server provider for the whole Europe. It might be even more awesome than not letting me buy my own server (running permanently) in my vicinity. Whoever @ID made these decisions has to be pure genious.

I still don't know what happened with nl/de servers or routing to them. A shitload of polish players got +30-35 ping to them as far as I know. I'm one of them and it feels SHIT SIR.

Quakeworld players use this a lot.
Try joining poland quake channel or quake world channel and ask around.

It is definitively worth it in my case.
I can get less 20 to 100 ping, crazy difference, but i live in the middle of the jungle and it depends if u have good routing to the Polish tunnel.

Quakeworld players also use commands from 1998 meant to reduce the packetloss induced by the game flooding your *modem connection* by reducing the total amount of packets going up.
They just don't get that in 2012 and with actual pl the shotgun approach will always win vs shooting cannonballs to have lower pl *statistics*

Im in a similar situation. I used to have ~48 ping to DE, FR and NL, but nowadays I am happy if I get 65. Been like this for a year almost now. :/

I don't mind ping 60 but it's jumping 50-80 constantly here (like 20 times a second). I do amazing lg suspends atm that I never did before but my overall acc is ~20%. RL is totally random.

i find ping to be a huge factor, and this is coming from someone who waries between 30 and 70 on regular basis. my lg drops 7% depending on ping (same opponent, thunderstruck 1v1 all shaft), rockets are absolutely horrible. taking a fight with rl means you are probably gonna have to give up aiming more or less, or shot 1-2 less rockets than your (low pinging) opponent.

The lower the better, but the most important is to be used to your ping. You can be pretty good at 30. You can be pretty good at 60. But if you keep switching between both you will probably play much worse.

^ Basically this. Like OP, my minimum ping to the nearest server is about 60, but it's no use worrying about "how much" it's making you play worse... it's just what you got, and you have to get used to it.

Usually low ping owns high ping. But since it's considered an unfair advantage to have a proper connection, QL utilizes a thing called anti-lag or unlagged. In theory you should be able to have the same experience up to ping 80 (iirc). Therefore you're fine with 60. Above 80-100 it can get nasty, but there are many people playing decent enough on high ping to have fun.
However, it seems that QL is some special case where you might get the impression that playing on ping 50 is superior to ping 20. google "weird site:esreality.com" for further information.

Can't explain that properly. Playing (instagib, referring to rail only) on higher ping is more fun. Since both pings are below unlagged threshold, it should be (as far as I understand the concept) the same experience: click model to win. But it's not. I have the impression that the "sweet spot" where I can register hits is not only depending on my ping (which is ok) but also on my opponents ping. It feels worse when playing on lower pings, compared to higher pings.

And it's sad, because:
a) we're talking online gaming here. Ping is a factor. The only thing that matters, is LAN, because of ping. And it doesn't change with this special olympic "everybody under 80ms will play JUST LIKE on LAN"-unlagged solution. It's not working, and it probably never will.
b) when I started online gaming, the goal was to get closer to those zero-ping conditions with low latency connections. And now I'm ranting here about having more fun on worse pings...

I know you wrote that. But it's not strange. It's intended afaik. Players nowadays think the possibility to play "competitive" or even "meaningful" matches with fairly high pings outweights the amount of randomness it brings to the game. I didn't say I could win every online tournament... you're know that because you always whined that I couldn't even get top16 in random cups to which I would then point out that I made top4 fairly often which you would try to discredit etc. But fact is that I also often dropped out before the last 4 (top32 or top16)...
So to positively affect the number of games I would win online has hardly any correlation with "winning every online tourney".

You actually are describing the situation REALLY BAD by saying "it will just fix the shot that you should hit on your client... so every time your enemy will start a lg fight, he will deal free dmg, and knockback...". As this is false.
Ofcourse if 'you start the lg fight' you obviously press fire first and can deal a bit of free dmg. But it goes both ways and it's rediculous how much difference there is between playing a ping 10 guy and a ping 60 guy.

Also I don't say he's at an advantage I say that his ping negatively influences my side. While you can get used to playing on a high ping easy (it takes me around a day to 'rework' my game to fit a different ping) you can't ever get used to your opponents ping (as in online tourneys you have to face different connections all the time).

I refuse to play a 'non lan game' because 'netcode is fucked up'.
Other people however don't care if what they are playing (imo) "is not quake". I mean people like strenx play track the bunny rather than quake.

Now that is fine with me... everyone can play how he wants.
But I hate it that the netcode in ql forces people to do certain things. And I hate it even more that you cannot counter it if you don't also alter your game to their connection.

Say that strenx warps slightly and has ping 45... that forces me (if I want to win) to heavily damage him every time he picks up an lg or I have to play around all lg fights which heavily limits my options as to which areas to enter.
This would then lead to me (in control) moving around the level like a madman trying to keep possitioning while whoring the rl and spamming nades to limit his movement and out of control I'd have to be very weary about jumping into rooms.
If however he would have a no warp I can suddenly play a whole different game as I would be able to hit him with rails which then means that I don't have to move around as much and I can play much more passive throughout the game.

Now because I hate it that the netcode forces you to make such decisions I refuse to alter my game based upon that. I alter my game based upon the preferences of my opponent (so indirectly I still tweak some stuff according to their ping during the game). But I could pre-game say how to 'best counter his ping' and just do that... but it limits my possibilities to actually play the full game of quake.

Now people who have a crap connection and play a lot of lg... they DON'T force you to play a certain way... the netcode FORCES you to do so. As you cannot solve 'their advantage of the combination of playstyle and netcode' in any other way.

So they optimise their gameplay to fit to their connection... this is not quake! Because in quake you optimise your gameplay to counter your opponent.

- I ended top4 in csn cups I entered (usa cups) where I played on ping 100 - 140. Also I had many games on usa servers just to "improve my overall game". Heck I even played semi pro's on japanese servers without too much trouble (ping 350 - 400). I played close to prozac for instance while he was in japan.

- I don't blame others for playing in a certain way which is forced by the ping. I blame the netcode that forces their playstyle.

You warp when your ping spikes. And extremely obviously it has to be 'solved' by the netcode.

would forcing the ping to the highest spike solve that? say someone has 48-64 on lagometer, would forcing ping to (56)-64 not solve the studdering model?

hmmm well if pings are constant then they don't warp yes... but to 'solve' it by putting the ping to the highest spike has way too many negative influences. And it actually increases the difficulty of synchronisation especially if you have packetloss etc. This would probably lead to other problems as well.
And ofcourse you don't know which ping is the highest untill it is reached (so you can still have warps on the way up).

the problem is that you exaggerate everything and find miserable disadvantages in things that are way more beneficial for you than flawed.

Before routing to de change I had 32ms ping while now I ping around 45 to de and I can tell you for sure that my lg feels weaker in direct 1vs1 fights vs good player. I hit around 3% less in those fights.

also on higher ping it's harder to dodge projectile weapons. On 80ish ping a rocket that would hit you directly explodes and hits you a couple of meters b4 it should hit you. If you watch better players not used to highping they have the tendency to take an higher amount of face rockets.

projetilenudge gets weird at 30+ms, rockets spawning 5 meters in front of the models, makes it harder to dodge in close encounters.

It has different effect for different people.
For me, <15ms is fine, but still there's a very noticeable difference between LAN and even 5-6ms online ping
15-30 is okayish, gets harder to aim with rockets, and you start feeling weirdness in lg aim, some rails can be hit off enemy model
45-60 is crappy, rocket aim is too hard, normal lg can be hit in minority of special situations, strafing is impossible, and for some reason even what should be minor lg or rocket knockback cannonballs you through half a map; for many rails you should aim in the air, not for the enemy.
70+ is unplayable (though on USA servers european can easily win even with 200 ping)

The netcode is one of the bigger issues at the moment in my eyes. With the low-ish player base you have to go further a field to play.

I also think the unlagged code is not good. I've picked up RA twice in a few games (within a second). Picked up MH only to not pick it up, die and the other player to pick it up. It makes me wonder what world view I have compared to my playing partner. Am I shooting into thin air? How much lg have they shot into me before it registers on my monitor.

At higher ping I find I seem to be much more 'hittable'.

Personally I think they should slowly step away from the browser; use it as a portal. We know it wont happen. The annoying thing it as a paying customer development is slower than when it was free. Don't get me wrong, love the game and I will still pay as it is cheap as chips.

There is a market out there for the taking, a truly competitive gaming platform. Built with thought behind it to keep the masses, the noobs, the pros. Wonder who will take it.

getting pickup sounds and chat animations before pickups is by your client, u can turn that off by some cg_predict command =)

I've had rockets disappear into thin air twice. Still not sure whether that was a connection thing, or some weird ledge/clipping thing. It was seconds before I died, so it's not like the mega-situation you described.

okay so, this is what i know:

ping 0-15 = not THAT good for hitscan, good for projectile weapons -> awesome
ping 20-30 = okish for hitscan, pretty good for projectiles
ping 35-45 = best ping ever for hitscan, not THAT good for projectiles
ping 50-70 = not THAT good for hitscan, pretty bad for projectiles
ping 80+ = bad for hitscan, bad for projectiles

Basically, because of the fact that the anti-lag system doesn't work after 80ping, when you play with such a ping, try to use cl_timenudge, cl_autotimenudge and cg_projectilenudge.

for exemple with ping 100 :
cl_timenudge -20
cg_projectilenudge 80

i'm not sure about cl_autotimenudge, dunno if it overwrites cl_timenudge, i mean, i'm not sure that iif you have cl_autotimenudge set to 1, if it's necessary to play with cl_timenudge.

From my experience they combine. Not too long ago I enabled autotimenudge with timenudge set to -20. The models were basically a slideshow. I can't confirm it right now, but it definitely seemed that way the day I tried it.

maybe a good idea to make a binding for that to activate it on higher ping serverers. my default is timnenudge -10. it actually is playable (in CA at least) up to 80.

dunno if this is highping related: when i spec someone in CA i often not get the correct weapon sounds. it gives the sound of the previouse weapon. second shot is corretc then. not a big issue ofc.

edit: actually i think i stick to -10

cl_autotimenudge calculates dynamically your timenudge value depending of the ping, so no... you don't need to set timenudge value if this is set to 1. ;)
Edit: As for the ping ranges. Yes, I agree with you. Before the routing change to de I pinged 32-35 there and hit around 3% more in 1vs1 lg fights than now with 55 ping. :(

One doesn't exist. I think cl is correct and cg was created by accident

3% in 1v1 lg fights but on maps like aero it's much more.

Yes, because even locking with lg is little bit slower/harder, but that little bit is enough for your opponent to deal the innit 50dmg to you.

try cg_hitbeep 0 for a while on lg.

most of the times i ping 70+ and i note the difference of even 2-3 ms while aiming

Not sure if trolling but... 2-3 ms is so insignificant the difference it makes is virtually impossible for you to notice, compared to other major factors that actually affect aim such as position, dodge, opponent's ping...

i note the difference beetwen 71ms and 74ms, i'm not saying it's a huge difference but i can feel it
it's all about the first hit when you go aggressive with shaft/rocket
for example: going upstairs in aerowalk for a lg vs lg fight
maybe 2-3 ms are insignificant on lower ping
