If you played football, you know that Messi is the best. You are right about goals and stuff but it's what Messi does for the team that makes him the best. Besides scoring ridiculous amount of goals without being egoistic he also produces an insane amount of assists and goal opportunities for other players. Ronaldo shoots all the time, even from half the field if he has the space..He's not much of a team player.
If Messi gets covered well he pulls back and plays a top class midfielder, and he does that a lot. Ronaldo can't do that. Yes he's a top player for sure but Messi is just Messi.

The award has nothing to do with who wins La Liga (as you might or migt not know there is more than one big league in Europe), it goes to the best player and that is Messi.
He scored more goals than Ronaldo with less penalties, gave more assists, has a bigger influence on the game.

The captain and the coaches of all the national teams can vote for the Balon d'Or. Ronaldo is portugals captain so he was supposed to vote. It's not allowed to vote for yourself though, so he apparently was injured and let Bruno Alves vote, who guess what, voted for Ronaldo first and didn't include Messi in the top3.

Unlike the Portuguese Ronaldo he didn't drove Lamborghini's and put himself on the top model date market, or go for any kind of publicity stunts to boost his career.
