Take the Halo player OGRE2 for example. That website only has his winnings from 12 tournaments. He's actually won money from over 80 tournaments.

I would actually be really interested to see Vo0 talk about how he managed his winnings. Surely 240k isn't really enough to live off it for the rest of your life (at least comfortably) but it's still a pretty big sum of money.
Also it would be nice to hear about things like tax, payments delayed or even not sent, teams/sponsors cut, travel expense etc and how it affected the winnings.

I don't think there are any real articles/videos about that kind of thing.

in poland theres a law that says tax from any prize must be paid by competition organizer, and he has to pay it without making winning smaller...

Its actually quite sad how little there is to be won in esports.

Gaming is such a big industry, pretty much every 2nd person on this planet plays some kind of game - which is billions of players. And the gaming companies make millions/billions. If, for example, there were only ONE game in the world and all of these billions of players were playing it, then the top gamers would earn as much (if not more) than sport superstars. It just sucks that these gamers are split over countless platforms (PC, Consoles, Mobile, etc...) and over thousands of games within these platforms.

Of course there doesnt just have to be one game for gamers to earn a considerable amount of money. Sports also has many different sports, but not even close to as much as there are games.

But I do think the day will come when gamers will earn some good money, and not just the top 5 etc... but many many more.

But until then: play for fun, not for money. If you're in it for the money, you would be better off working even at McDonalds :)

Still 240k is a lot of money, esports has never been a really viable career choice, unless yout go the fatal1ty route with some really agressive branding, but winning 200k$ on the side isn't really sad nor it is little. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of artists (painters, musicians etc) who don't live of their art and don't manage to extract 200k$ from it either.

I agree with you that as a whole the esport industry has always been pretty laughable when it came down to money, but in the case of Fatal1ty and Vo0 with the famous PK World Tour it was probably one of the rare instance where there was actually a lot of money involved.

right now most games are niche, which means only very specific sponsors are interested. even computer hardware companies are not interested in quake because it plays good even on a old computer. so promoting the newest graphics cards and processors is somewhat obsolete. and let's be honest a quake can not survive purely on marketing gaming mice and stermy gamer food.

Professional competitive gaming ("e-sports") has 2 major problems:
- Every game is a niche itself. It's not even the genre but games themselves are an island that struggles to find resources, and when it runs dry then sponsors move to the next island.
- Relies on advertising (hardware and others) and good will (organizers). Recently the game devs started to finance competitions and make the game be on major lans.

So far we have seen only one game that has truly established, which is sc:bw. All the rest come and go, some with longer periods than others, so lesson here is not to think being already established is what matters because what truly does is sponsors, and companies sponsor what is going to be better advertising for them and that's trendy games, the complete opposite of established (old) ones.

Basically pro gaming does not really work. It's not enough to retire on and usually not enough for you stick around the industry long enough to become a coach, commentator or whatever...

Computers and games are so new and develop so fast that it's impossible to build something that stands the test of time. Maybe in the future....

I think that the future will bring a lot in the eSports scene. Like you said, it is in its infant shoes right now.

It is not like Basketball (or any other pro sport) was founded one day and instantly turned into what it is today. They first mounted a ring on some wall, threw a random ball through it. Years after Years after Years of development of the game etc... and then more years after that to market it and make it a respectable sport.

Considering every damn kid grows up with computer gaming today (which is not something that can be said about our parents/grandparents), it is not far fetched to think that in the coming generations computer gaming will also be able to throw off enough money to make a living off. And not just for a handful of top players, but for a whole lot more.

But... only time will tell :)

Here there's 2 problems:

1.- People talk about competitive gaming like it was only one activity, whereas in reality every man and game is on himself just like sports are. Literally no one cares about "competitive gaming" but about one particular game instead because everyone likes the games they like (I know), not every single thing there's out there. It's not like "sports people" watch 200 sports isn't it: they are either soccer fans or polo fans, not both.

Where I want to go with this is that "e-sports" does not and will never have a development as a whole activity; every game is on itself so some will fail massively (warsow, nexuiz), some won't (LoL) and every single one is doomed to fail someday after a good run (quake). Right now you can live like a millionaire playing LoL, considering a successful pro player has practically 0 expenses (gaming house, pc and food provided to him, etc.), lives playing videogames, travels around the world every month and earns quite a lot considering the lack of expenses, including stream revenue (a player who's individual stream has dozens of thousands of viewers earns dozens of thousands of dollars a month just on that), salaries (ok but not awesome) and tournament earnings (dozens of intl lans a year, plus lots and lots of online tournaments. It's not only the $5M tournament but a whole season).

With that said, it's better to talk about individual games instead of a whole activity, because financially and on the players side it doesn't work like that. It's not like you are playing and watching "games" but "black ops 2" instead, not warsow and the hundreds of fps games out there. It's not even a genre thing.


2.- It cannot be compared with basketball or any other real sport because that's the same activity being professionally played for decades. That hasn't happened in "e-sports" because there's no money on supporting a game for decades since people play and watch the newest thing (sc:bw to sc2, or rather kids play halo4 not donkey kong arcade) instead of sticking to one (basketball). Marketing, hardware, graphics and others play a part, but the obvious tl;dr version is there's no money in donkey kong arcade anymore.
People talk about "competitive gaming" like it was the newest thing, but it has been around to the very least for 15 years or more if you consider what happened before with consoles and arcades. It has not changed the slightest bit in all this time, with generations going by and all that.

As far as marketing goes, Sports are very similar to eSports. They have to "fight" eachother for marketshare just as computer games (Quake vs Warsow vs CS vs Battlefield etc...) have to do it.

Or even within a sport there are multiple disciplines, example: Skiing. They could also say "Hey stop doing this discipline and that discipline. If we all only do THIS ONE discipline we would could combine all thesponsors/etc., meaning we could earn more...". So its kind of like the Quake community splitting up between Q1, Q2, Q3, QL etc..

Its just a fight of marketshare.

But I dont agree with your last sentence. 15 Years is a VERY short amount of time for something like this, which takes generations. Parents who are gamers woh have children who become gamers who have children who become gamers.... it becomes NORMAL in Society to become a gamer. Because right now, it is definately NOT normal to be a gamer. But after a few generations, it will be normal. And then people wont be scared to say in public "I play competitive games"... etc. It might actually one day becom "COOL" to say it publically, and THAT is when it will become BIG.

This is why the distinction between "videogames" and "esports" is crucial. While one of videogames' problem is the social stigma, that has practically nothing to do with competitive gaming's main problem, which is where the cash flow comes from and how much it lasts on one game before moving to the next one.

And btw it's been at least one generation since this started, depending on where you start counting.
