This would require server demos and ability to download them afterwards. Lots of bandwidth and storage unless it was made avaible only for lans but on lan you can do it yourself as presented by the video.

They could host them for a limited time (2-8 weeks) before deleting them, and what's presented in the video is barely a solution.

They could host them for a hour, but gave ability to upload them again.

Or offer to download straight after, and let's be honest, not many will do this so it won't be a bandwidth problem.

While I see the problem, I think it's not really the main issue.

In the past servers would upload all maps and stuff to anyone who connected and did not have them.As far as I know servers are hosted and paid by externals, so this would not impact id software's budget on quake.

What would impact it, is the development time to make it. I think this is the major problem.

Most servers are paid by id. Only those in places where the playerbase isn't large enough to make a server profitable are paid by "externals".

im not sure, but a script that makes a "screenshot" of game situation, when its terminated before 10th minute would solve the OP question and your bandwitch concerns

There were cvars implemented for this kind of situations set the clock, set the ammo and hp (correct me if i'm wrong) and other stuff basically to recreate certain situations but they got disabled because of players abusing them :|

If I'm not mistaken, there is a special type of pro account which is "given" to cup admins, such as Clanbase admins. This account acts just like a normal pro account but has extended features, such as the ability to run multiple private servers at once.

I think id software could re-instate the scores/timer commands, together with the new hp/armor/ammo commands (and maybe even a status command for each item on the map), but make it accessible only for the "cup admin" pro accounts. This way it prevents the widespread abuse that originally lead to their removal, but guarantees the possibility of their implementation at LANs and important online cups.

Either this, or add serverside demos (again, allowed only for cup-admin pro accounts so that disk space or bandwidth aren't an issue).

Ok, common duel demo is about 2-3 mb (for 10 min gameplay).
QLRanks were announced 24 August 2011 (http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=2140507) and currently tracked 2.5m duel games. That's a 560 days and 4 464 duels per day.
4.5k * 3mb = 13.5 Gb of demos per day or 0.4 Tb per month. Not so much, huh?

Gotta play the devil's advocate here.

- Why only duel? If there were serverside demos, they would probably be for all modes. Which means a lot more demos and probably bigger demos too since there are more players in them.

Storage is one thing but it's not that much of an issue as they would probably not keep the demos more than a day... the issue here with the transfer of these demos. If you have a demo of 10 MB and 5 players download it, it's 50 MB transferred. There are two sub-problematic here :
- All of these transfers, on top of normal game traffic, must not break the transfer cap for that server.
- These transfers must not hinder the normal game traffic.

Recorded serverside demo will be stored for only a hour after the game.
But any player still can download it and "upload" (or just parse it on client and send only game state snapshot to server) to id servers again, when he will needed to resume the match. So, all demos will be stored only y players, and id wont need much disk space and traffic.

Reducing the storage time will only reduce the storage capacity needs. I really doubt it will change the traffic... players will only download them sooner than they would if demos were hosted longer.

I dont believe players will download ALL their demos. Ok, you can allow download demo of game only to players who played this game. So, duel demo will be downloaded only twice.

they are actually smaller than individual demos by every player. see cpma's or qw's (which are stored server side and have been for years, gg community) mvds.

it's pretty simple, think about it: one players pov includes more than he/she "sees and records" (and sometimes different players even "see and record" the exact same thing), this leads to doubling of the same data if you compare individual demos to server side mvds, which have to store the same data (the same gamestate) only once.

/edit ok, that makes little sense :p it's simple, take a tdm match: 8 players recording what their client receives from the server compared to the server simply recording everything once.

All I understand from your post is that the sum of individual demos is greater than the single server demo... which is kinda obvious already. Is that what you were saying or did you say that ONE server demo is smaller than ONE client demo?

of course not, but why would you want just one client's demo!? who gets to decide which demo ends up on the server and which one does not?

even for a duel you want both demos which would already be bigger than the equivalent server side mvd for the game.

server side demos (cpma's mvds) and the ability to stream demos (replaying demos on gtv) already exist, they exit in the same fucking engine quakelive is coded in, plus there is even the example of a previous id software game that sports all of this and adds automatic storage of serverside demos: quakeworld.

before you ask, neither the qw or the cpma community nor the qw or the cpma servers were harmed in any way as a result of this. it's a good thing which sparked new interest in said games and we should be pushing for it.

you could just aswell silently leave this thread and let the rest of us figure out how to do it and the reason it will never work out: id won't do it, ever. simple as that.

everything we need to get this to work already exists in quake3 (and is community made). there is no need for scepticism on the technical side of things. on the other hand to "put real things in motion" is not decided by the players or the fact that this is doable, is that so hard to see?

the actual problem is the fact that id sells quake3 to us on a monthly basis, which started the whole clusterfuck. if they sell "quake3" they can not legally sell the product of someone else only their own work, hence the need to pay those mod and map makers as a legal principle before being able to include their work in quakelive.

the core of the problem is that id software thought they made quake into what it is, they failed to see that what makes quake great is the community and their work. their plan was to almost literally sell us a game they made in '99 with a game browser in a website.
yet quake3 evolved so much during the years of modding and map making that it's not the same game id software released over a decade ago. they should've known this and be prepared to either pay the royalties to the community or hire people to replace their work.

individual (duel) demos in ql take about 1.5 to 2mb of space, that's not a relevant difference to mvds.

This topic has been discussed plenty, there are added benefits of being able to set a match's starting conditions based on any given moment in a demo... namely training purposes. This could potentially open a whole new world of beginner-oriented tutorials.

I think feature requests are appropriate only for games that are actually being developed, not just poorly maintained.

The cost of amazon S3 storage is really low these days, with good infrastructure and planning it could be stored there for at least 3-6 months with minimal costs to iD team

Today Cooller vs Cypher 5th match - restarting 4 min was so bad. Come on id, the engine is old but you can at least add a few useful features.

It could be even with a "warmup", replay 10 seconds before the restart point so players can be perfectly ready and back in game.

or as an alternative, even add a "auto-pause" option on pro-spawned servers which automatically pauses the match when a player 999īs for more than 2 seconds and maintains everything in its exact state indefinitely, so that even if the 999īd player times out and reconnects, all stays as it was

am I wrong or did I see auto-pause on CPM?

I don't see how it could possibly come from the community. Pseudo-server-side-demos would surely be possible by somehow merging the relevant information in every client-side demos from a given match. That would be satisfying, while not perfect. We can imagine issues where some information never reached a client... like if a player lost his connection as he was stepping on some item and never received confirmation that he took it but the server decided he did. Anyway, that's not the problem here.

The problem is that you'd need to be able to change the server's state to what it was at some random point in a match. If we had commands to change the current match time, item respawn time, player health and armor, player positions+looking directions+velocity as well as commands to spawn/modify entities (rockets/grenades in motion... moving map structures...) we could make a tool to automate the information fetching from demos to server state. But we need id software's involvement for that. Even then it wouldn't be perfect as it would surely mess up client prediction and server unlagged hit detection for the first few snapshots.

Without any control over the server itself, we would need to reproduce exactly what happened in that match through normal, automated playing on client side. We would still not have perfect reproduction (lag, fps...) and that would probably be very hard to achieve.

I think id could implement these commands for league admins, save for random entity manipulation, easily enough. But without that, I don't think the community can realistically achieve "Resume from demo".

You can alter server time in one direction by waiting. There's also /setmatchtime that could be enabled for league admins. Apart from that, I don't see any way. There's always the possibility of an unknown exploit but I wouldn't put my hopes on that. Same goes for player/item stuff.
