if there are not enough italians (or people in that region with italy as center) paying for the game, they close down the servers in italy, seems quite logical to me

actual ita location wasn't offerd by id (or whoever it is now)
was paid by donations made by community, even, the whole sum was anticipated by 1 person who was later fully (or mostly) refunded by those donations...

that's really nice to see, that the italian community is so strong

From a business perspective it does not really make sense,
if there are enough players paying.

why wouldn't it make sense? as long as you're sure (for whatever reason) that people will stay with your game you can make your service worse and hope they don't notice/don't care/aren't able to find an alternative.
on the contrary, there is no direct correlation between people paying for premium/pro and id renting servers. that's a fairytale :)

besides, this is a about something completely different, id apparently never paid for the milan servers, the italian community did through donations, which dried up this year.

just to be sure you get this, people paid for premium/pro AND rented a server for id to use (and make money). now that's one hell of a business concept.

At first I thought this was to do with the Italian Parliamentary Elections and that PdL os forcing the coalition to demolish and pave over Milan and send the proceedings personally to Berlusconi (or at least global warming jeaporadising the city of Milan due to its proximity to the Alps and potential avalanches of death).

"QuakeLive server will shutdown" kind of seems slightly less dramatic :(

What are the infrastructures id require to host a server? Here in europe a lot of people have 100/100 Mega symetric connections, even 200/200 here. Would that be ok if someone give id a line with a server to host there qlservers or do they need to make a contract with a professional server hosting society?

i tried to ask about hw/bandwidth requirements lately. havn't got a reply yet...

italian servers are paid by the community, they are not hosted by id directly.

In op's link they are only discussing about very few donations, not enough to run servers for another year (starting from May).

price is wrong and that conf was above minimum specs; however, server.it lies on milan backbone, that's why ping is good and it has been chosen to host QL ita servers.

Realy they have to host another server in France too... why was he stoped?

french server were really awesome + pretty active as well they should get them back and get rid of 1 nl location :( otherwhise we'll be really focused on .de + .nl only more or less

It only means id's server provider in Europe (as far as I know, aside from donated servers, they only have one provider there) got rid of their servers in Paris. Or maybe they still have servers there but nothing fit for QL. Who knows. But it certainly doesn't mean the company was sold out; the effect would be much bigger than just losing Paris (and id surely wouldn't have said "decommissioned"...).

I'm always surprised the pings are so crap in Europe when everything is so close together.

I get 40 ping on a server in Joburg from Cape Town (1600km apart) on a crappy 2mbit line.

(Well UK to Holland/France/Germany was ok, everything else is crap between countries)

There are a lot of connections in Europe between various internet providers. But as a providers are getting bigger, they form peering groups with only some designated traffic exchange points only in few places.

For example, imagine you live in central Russia (or even somewhere in Siberia) and you have one provider and your friend across the street is using another provider. Imagine a usual situation: those two providers are in different peering groups and are exchanging their traffic not in your city, not in Moscow, but your packets go all the way across the globe to Frankfurt and then back to your friend.

It is, sadly, happening everywhere, the bigger providers are becoming, they tend to have less traffic exchange points due to the commercial reasons. BTW, when ports on exchange points are do not have enough bandwidth, you experience packet loss along the way. Hello lagging streams.
