As super koziol suggested; a forum post to get feedback from you guys regarding FACEIT. This can be about our shows, our platform, community management, whatever. If you see a bug, report it, if you have a new idea, let us know!
1. Yes!
2. Not much, it's hard to find where it goes wrong. The most likely now is that during the time of the final either LCS goes live, or US users come online en mass.
3. As long as he doesn't grow the proper height to board planes it will be hard. We've sent him the same stuff Messi used to grow.
- Stream works fine until the semis and finals (11:30 CST or so), rendering them unwatchable and potentially ruining the whole thing and losing a lot of viewers*
- The website is somewhat confusing, maybe there's just too many things on the same page
*I know it's a twitch issue and presumably LoL finals start at that time, but that doesn't mean the issue should be ignored.
-be better prepared for unexpected delays - have something ready that you can talk about for a couple of minutes, show a frag movie or maybe some pre-recorded interview etc
-have more frequent interviews, let players know they should be ready to come on skype for a couple of questions
-if at all possible I'd really like to see something like a 100/50/25/25 price pool, if you're getting to play a bo3 with >3000 people watching you certainly deserve a little cash for that. also more of an incentive for players to take part in the cups more frequently
-give away some goodies, make it a facebook competition if you want to
-maybe have somewhat regular special events such as a 2v2/tdm cup and announce these in good time. have them before the start of the next duel season.
that's about all I can think of right now, looking forward to see what you'll come up with :)
thats not necessarily true tho. for the people who can load 720p+ at 60 fps it will look better, but the ones who are stuck at lower resulotions will have a shitmess of blur. and the advantage 720p+ has over a 480p+ at 60 fps cant be that much. twitch.tv doesnt load resulotions lower than maximum in higher fps than 30 =PP but like i said, i cant imagine 720p+ looking that much better than 480p+ in 60 fps
480p+ would be suuuuhweeeet. also 102 stream yesterday had 57sthp+ quality and it looked great and run great on a slow-ish laptop. I say it's worth lookig into
It'll look like shit if they keep picmip 0. Everything that isn't at least 720p with a high bit rate does; Quake isn't stream friendly in that regard, at least at low picmip.
There's very little they can do without either ruining the quality of the stream at 480/720+ or resorting to high picmip to make lower quality settings more bearable.
yeah it's a vicious circle. I think that the solution is multiple high bitrate resolutions to choose from, but at the moment twitch doesn't allow it as far as I know.
picmip would increase quality for lower quality options as well, but i dont think thats the best solution. i think setting a lower maxium resulotion wouldnt effect the people who are able to watch in 720p+, and at the same time allowing those who cant a much better experience.
1) i'd say (i did serveral times but whatevs :D) add the feature that modifies the hitcolor based on damage dealt. I want to be able to listen to some music while watching while knowing what amount of damage spam did.
2) kidnap 2GD, torture him untill he says yes, make him wear a suit and give us a 2GD+Diddy K experience. And off-camera brainstorm a little with the guy for future projects (together or whatevs), his take on what's going on there and stuff
For your streams: Lower caster volume and make the ingame sound higher please. In game sound really adds to the immersion. - especially since your casters tend to have to a fast pace/loud presence. :)
I would totally leave q3 music on in breaks instead of the themesongs, half of which are gay as fuck. sonic mayhem + FLA ftw
etc
this shit would totally get my juices flowing if it were playing leading up to the stream going live as well as during the breaks... not the emo shit that everyone seems to like now ("omg omg what's the name of this gay ass song guise?") old school game + new age wank don't mix motherfuckers, BRING BACK SONIC MAYHEM

I agree, although the FaceIt song should always be there, and the current electronic with lots of strings piece they're playing a lot is fine compared to the "Android incoming" stuff they had before.
YES, O MY LORD YES! ... how could this be forgoten for so long?!
... and croshair pulse on dmg: by the size of the crosshair, you see if the hit was direct or splash, having like current constant red you dont know what happend at a corner shot.
... and please fastsky ... dm13 looks tottaly crap in 1 color sky.
... and 2GD! ----ty, and please more of him as a guest.
My only complaint would be that the casting has been a bit too 'low-brow' for my tastes. While it is important to make the casting accessible to an extent, I know that ddk at least is capable of a lot more, especially in terms of analysis. It gets a bit silly when you hear 'oh my God' or 'wow, that was amazing' with every noteworthy shot. Exclamation in moderation. Zoot's been improving a lot which I like to see, I hope this continues.
I don't mean to unrespect these guys by the way, they're great dudes, but I'm not one to shy away from negative criticism.
Sometimes ddk feels the need to talk all the time, which I think is counterproductive (starts tripping over words, sounding nervous and exhausting excitement). When he does not do this he likes to change voice tone and build up some tension which is good.
Maybe some prerecorded stuff that help beginners and intermediates one way or another.
ex. Make a weekly demo analysis of some demo thats sent in by the viewers. Choose a shorter sequence the demo and go in depth at an interesting situation for both players and discuss the best options.
Very good one. IMO they should do that about some of the matched they streamed the previous week.
Even some openings may be very intersting. Showing the differences between players.
For example i noticed that Rapha usually tries to delay a lot the first frag and plays the opening accordingly, while a player like evil just jumps on a weapon and shoot your ass (And if that's an LG you are fucked).
That would raise a little the average knowledge of the game and would be easier to understand the depth of the game for newcomers.
I remember some very one sided openings on stream, and half of the chat blaming the spawn, but it was the player who was careless and didn't play the opening accordingly (it was the classic ZTN spawn higher in the RL room, the guy jumped towards the YA instead of hearing and then going to RA, the otherone spawned closer to the RL and owned him).
It seems that when i connect with the twitch tv android app from my cellphone the twitchtv search bar doesnt found anything with faceit/face it/faceittv/faceit.tv etc and it is not listed aswell. Is it normal or?
I find the twitch.tv android app often struggles to find streams and often struggles to play them. It also doesn't support vods. Really poor quality app.
I'm not sure how the tournament format goes for now, but some of my lower tier mates have said that they just got raped in every buy-in tournament they played, at their own skill level. So maybe make a second bracket/tournament for the first-second round losers. Not quite the loser bracket.
Maybe FaceIt should have its own rating/ranking system that only counts tournament matches so people can't easily cheat QLRanks to get in low tier tournaments.
I think it's great as it is. Great casters, great stream quality. Only thing which kind of annoys me is the lag but obviously they're doing their best to fix it for everyone.
Sometimes the casters get a bit quiet-loud-quiet-loud volume wise. I find myself constantly adjusting the volume. They basically have the Joe Rogan/UFC effect going on. The excitement is good imo and this could largely be improved by leveling the audio stream a bit.
The stream often lags, both live and when trying to watch VODs. Probably Twitch's fault.
The highlight videos are awesome but way too dark a lot of the times.
You guys are doing a lot of stuff right and I've been looking forward to watching every week. It would be awesome to have a NA equivalent.
My two main complaints are: accessibility of the brackets during cups (I know it's not THAT hard, but it should be fucking easiest thing in the world and not everybody is using the new twitch layout the button in which often is linking wrong bracket anyway) and sound mixing during the show. and I don't mean casters/ingame levels, but transitions between live stuff and videos you guys put out. oh and also:

Please, please, please always end the stream with the FACEIT logo and the FACEIT song playing (kinda like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb0MjWb8ZZo), it really ties it all together everytime :D
I really enjoyed the episodes where Fraze was providing insight into the duels.. the problem I found, ddk and the other guy were dominating the conversation during matches.. fraze would start explaining the situation and possible options the player has, to which he gets interupted with "LOOK AT THAT... blah blah blah".. completely lost Fraze and some really valuable info about ingame duel strategy - which I for one am REALLY finding difficult to find good content. Live content is a great way to teach. What I'm getting at, you should definately get more PRO players to cast more often, and when you do, more focus should be on their contribution
I really dont mind having the games shout casted, however, it would be really valuable to run 2 streams, one WITH casters, and another WITHOUT.. sometimes I find the casters are not providing anything valuable, so would prefer to just watch the game with quake sounds alone. Also, after the game, these days VODS from streams are made available rather than player demos.. watching a historical game with casting just has no affect at all. Casting is for the LIVE MOMENT.
Examples:
"To be aggressive or not to be aggressive"
by Anton Singov.
More than a book, a philosophical journey into the mind of one of the brightest quaker ever and how he sees Quake itself. Added in the special edition, the last chapter "What Strenx should do".
Av3k's shoes. Suspiciously looking like yours. Buy them back!
Spartie's Party Invites. With the exclusive feature of ragequitting the party during the first 20 seconds if you bump in a russian guy.
"Situations". Perfume for men. By Anton Singov. "Situations".
Decypher: the new type of weed discovered in Belarussia with dangerous side effects: you could feel like Neo in the Matrix while playing quake. And very hungry.
I never said it should work like that. I'm just trying to figure out where it goes wrong. If it works by adding the $ sign, then we know we need to remove that. If this doesn't fix it, we need to look into it further.
I don't want to sound like a smart-ass here, but having the dollar sign as required input by the user should never have even been a considered as possible cause in the first place. It's just plain wrong! For a website such as FaceIt's, the currency sign should be strictly limited to appearing as a label (or image) client-side and should not be involved in any way what-so-ever in the serverside processing for the amount of dollas, transactions, etc.
But more importantly, having someone who is not versed in web development (*) act as a middleman between the devs and the users is only going to complicate things. I insist, I don't want to sound like a smart-ass, it's just I'm a bit of a purist in the proper methods one should follow when it comes to debugging and beta-testing. I blame my former boss :x
* I'm under the impression that you aren't versed in web development precisely because of the dollar sign suggestion. If you put forward that question by yourself, and supposing the devs are already aware that the site shouldn't and doesn't work in that way, then it's a case of the middleman that's complicating things. However, if it's actually the web developers themselves that specifically told you to ask him to check with the dollar sign, then it's their fault entirely and their dev skills are questionable :p In fact it doesn't even make any sense... surely they would have just tested it themselves anyway instead of asking you to ask rehepapp...
Whatever the case may be, as you can see, somewhere along the line something is flawed with the whole debugging protocol you are following. I strongly suggest you seek an alternative to the middleman scenario, such as setting up an easily accessible and highly visible feedback contact form on the site that is sent straight to the dev's inbox. Said form should be accessible even for people who aren't signed in or registered, and should require an email for further correspondence with the user.
This thread is a good idea, the problem is it's mixing administration / management issues and content requests (your job) with technical issues (devs job), but having direct communication with the devs, directly though the website and straight to their inbox, imo, would be better for the technical side of things, and give you more time to be the awesome admin you are :D
Edited by quake is potat at 10:15 CDT, 14 March 2013
The reason I asked was because it did work a while ago like that. Unfortunately devs are not organized enough to get things straight into their inbox. They need lists they can check things off :)
I have the same problem with login when using firefox. With chromium it works just fine. With firefox, I need to press f5 after first pressing login and getting the nothing to happen.
Start forcing servers and starting times. It should be join a server and battle, not let's start finding a server amidst the fucking tourney, then warm up, go smoking, it goes on and on. Loose administration has made TDM unwatchable. The game never starts.
Have you tried getting some sponsors yet? There are companies that are still interested in sponsoring Quake Live (see Corsair Saturday derby) and you get pretty good viewer numbers on streams. Plus now that you picked CS:GO it should be pretty easy, no?
corrupt tdmpickup ppls (they are a polish guy and a czech guy iirc, so that must be easy) and let them do their thing on faceit site with all the ranking and stuff. TDMpickup is the best way to lure new blood
could you maybe tell ddk to show us where the follow button is? he never does and i've been looking forever, a little help would be greatly appreciated.
Here's a suggestion for the Sunday Cups (and other one-time events too, I guess).
If you've watched The GD Studio you might know that they have this neat voting system where a UI with a poll appears on-screen (let's say with alternatives 1 & 2) and then the viewers are able to vote by simply typing 1 or 2 in the Twitch chat. The viewers are also able to follow the results via a live diagram on-stream.
This could be a good way of letting FACEIT viewers decide what game to watch pre-quarter/semifinal when there are multiple interesting games going on at the same time.
You really should have someone look over the weekly info mails before you're sending them out.
For instance, this is one of the first sentences in the mail I got today:
"The first match you absolutely have to check out WAS WAS etty versus luke_ie on Campgrounds, much hilarity ensued. This match would have some "full retard" moments, but as things progressed strenx and I found it difficult TO NOT TO be charmed and soon we would be on the edges of our seats just waiting to see what would happen next."
I realize written content is not in any way your main focus/strength and neither does it have to be but since you should at least spell check the "official" mails you're sending out and try to have them flow somewhat more naturally - for starters, stop using the word "would" 3 times in every single sentence.
As these mails are written by ddk from what I can gather, he should also take some of this advice into his casting: Whilst he should by all means be allowed to express some excitement over what's happening he should definitely try mixing his expressions up a little and not get stuck on saying "oh my god" everytime something exciting happens.
These little things are rather easy to improve upon and I really think they can go a long way when it comes to being perceived as professional.
Other than that, as always, keep up the good work! :)
edit: also I wonder whether you've given some thought to having tdm and ca the same week, one 2v2 and one 4v4, and then alternating for the next week?
youtube very good, but you weren't posting there for a long time and since you started again i didn't manage to get accustomed to the fact yet:] hence complain. of course there are people who can't watch youtube, so blah blah blah (never satisfied lol)
you need to do something about the first rounds being bo1+se. make the whole cup bo1 except finals but double bracket. must be fun for lower level teams to sign up, get to play 1 map for 8:25 and then lose by mercylimit and then it's over for them. react before the lower level teams stop signing up and the cup just dies . this is for tdm 4v4
nicerdicer/jeesports did something similar back when they've run a lot of cups, everyone could play for their final position in the tournament, of course a lot of people wouldn't play those and forfeit, but it's still a good possibility in the daily cups
If you think luke vs etty on campgrounds was hilarious, then you should really organize a hilarious showmatch between 2 pros on.... SPACE CAMP!
Yes, you heard me right! I specced a random duel the other day on Space Camp between two 1600-1700 elo guys, and it was absolutely hilarious.
About 3-4 minutes into he game, the scoreline was -2 to -6.
It is just brutally hilarious to watch a duel on that map (especially since nobody is practiced on it). So many 'mind blowns' since the map is mirrored, it just really messes with you. Add to that all the space traps, the retarded weapons/items (proximity, BFG, Minigun, Personal Teleporter, Kamikaze, etc...) and you got yourself a good time out!
PLEASE, get a funny showmatch going between 2 pros on this map :) It could be a nice filler during the stream when there is waiting time or something... :D
I know this idea might sound lame lame. But just trust me on this one... the stream/chat will go CRAZY!
Not that theres anything wrong with the casters, but I'd really love to see Joe Miller as co-caster one day. :D
Or does he do a show every sunday? Don't follow other games.
I think the faceit stream config realy need cg_impactSparks 1 which is realy neat and drawgun 1 which gives a nice swaying gun that gives more sensation of movement and precision of movements.
And they could add cg_marks 1 if they think it's good, also cg_crosshairHitStyle 1 which gives informations on damages dealt with color grading.
All in all, activate the damn sexeh sparks at least.
sound, sound, sound. now i'm a wannabee audiophile scum and there's no pleasing me, but the faceit studio sounds like a well, mix is flawed and there are often sync issues with videos during breaks. there's definitely room to improve.
Is there no way to get 480p VODs? It'd be awesome.
Twitch's VOD server is super slow and the videos are huge. (It literally takes 2h for 30min of video, and the flash plugin is an unstable piece of crap)
- Get a lower skilled player on stream and critic their play.
- Cover recent news about QL, give your opinions on the matter.
- Set up a poll each stream. (e.g. Should Cure be added to map pool?)
- (Maybe) Follow a different player each week. (Cooller one week, Cypher the next and so on).
Make a video for that person earlier in the week. (Where they are from, How long have they played Quake, player Montage, interview).
im surprised noone has mentioned the map pool in this thread.
new season, new mappool of totaly new maps. thats what quake needed and still needs. without this, we wont get any new players. noone wants to play against players who played a map for 10 years.
and it gets boring to watch the same people on the same maps for years with the same outcomes. we used to get the best to battle it out a couple of times a year, so it will get boring even faster now that we can watch them every week
quake gameplay could be pushing the boundries of gaming just like extreme sports do, but we are limiting ourselfs with the maps we play on
With Cg_followKiller enabled, I just dont get to see how good players recover from being fragged & losing the map control.
So I'd very much appreciate a collection of demos from each cup (even if its playoffs only) available for download on the faceit website.
- Cast some oldschool demos.
I know you guys prefer to use your own content, on the other hand, DDK and a lot of guests make a reference every now and then to an old game from the past, mention the big names such as unkind, lexer, b100.death, zamuz etc. Itd be a great thing to start things off with an oldschool demo casted from todays perspective.
Yeah, casting some old school demos as filler content would be awesome! The nostalgia level of Z4muZ, LeXeR, uNkind and, oh my god, old cooller-demos would be through the roof!
mby make Diddy K and Raffer analyze one of Raffer's games? Like they did on ESL Classic TV or whatever it was?
And with mby i mean DO IT DIDDY K!!!!!!!!
Here's an audio suggestion for the stream.
Currently ins' voice comes out as very thin and almost a bit
insufficient while ddk's voice comes out the complete opposite way which makes for a very unbalanced mix.
How about adding a bit more compression on ins, and maybe up the low/mids a bit (200-400Hz) to make ins come out as strong as ddk in the output mix?
Fix the fucking stream lag already. Come on, really ...
Week after week, month after month the same exact thing. Stream is pretty much unwatchable at 720+ and this seems to be an exclusive problem of the FACEIT channel.
Currently the FACEIT stream is running at 60 fps. Could lowering it to 30 fps reduce the required bandwidth and make the stream more watchable at higher resolutions (less lags and stuttering)?
To add to this, just setting everything to 60 fps, like suggested in #156, is not enough to remove tearing, the frames also need to be synchronized from the game to the capturing/broadcasting software. Now there still is tearing, see this from the last FACEIT cup: http://imgur.com/a/rM0Hh
Ideally, I suppose, the game and the stream would be running synchronized at 30 fps, if it doesn't cause other inconveniences.
The Avermedia capture cards have this tearing! I assume they use avermedia as stermy is pretty close to the Faceit team and I know he has one of their cards.
- Try to set up Skype Calls with (semi)-pro players to cast games, should be loads of fun when Rapha could do some guest-casting.
- Run some TDM cash tournaments again, that was loads of fun and TDM is alive and kicking ass atm!
- Announce FACEIT cups earlier so people got more time to get hyped and to sign up.
- Show the bracket (more) during streams.
- Let DDK play in some TDM showmatch or something.
Can someone please explain to me how FaceIt "levels" work? I'm level 8 at 1600 something elo when some guys are 1800+ elo and lvl 7 or less (and they have 1500 elo on Faceit site for some reason)?
- Needs more TDM
- Think there are to many daily cups.. Signed up a few times for TDM thursday cup, but were eventually the only one
- Sign my butt Roychezz
- Needs more coolness (ZEROQL GO CAST SOME)
