Personally I don't give a shit if it crashes and burns to the fucking ground, it's not like the gaming industry is actually doing anything to entertain me as of late, for all the billions upon billions of dollars it's supposedly "worth", and a purification through flames would be much appreciated. Since the mid 2000's there have been 1-2 titles released each year that I've been even marginally interested in.
Just like the movie "industry", there have been enough great movies made in the last 70 years to keep the planet entertained for a decade without having to churn out 50 piles of superhero wank or retarded horror sequels every year... but no, people insist on being massive faggots all their lives and feed these money machines in exchange for stale wank in the case of movies or dumbed down wank in the case of games.
The movie industry is actually a really good analogy, more particularly the genre of slasher. Slashers went through the same process essentially as described in the video above. When the genre was born through titles like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Halloween and Friday the 13th, all of which were made on very low budget but has great success in theaters, everybody wanted to cash in on this new, very popular genre. Tons of slashers were made in the early 80s, but they were decreasing in quality. Soon enough, the industry was flooded with crappy slashers, and the theatrical revenues critically dropped. That's when the genre was banished to video.
Then the movie industry started pushing out endless amount of sequels, riding the success of previous big hits, and Friday the 13th in just 10 years got to 9 movies. After even these big franchises starting drying out, the slasher genre seemingly crashed.
This is when the industry got a revelation, and instead of pushing out more sequels they started making quality films again with high production value, and thus neo-slashers were born in the late 90s, with titles like Scream, Urban Legend and Final Destination. However, following the success of these films, the same thing happened all over again. And once more a couple of years later when movies like Saw and Hostel made a break-in for torture-porn into the mainstream.
But in the second part of the 2000s, a new trend emerged. Now they started remaking every mildly successful slasher and exploitation movie from the 80s. And started making sequels for these remakes. But for me, the most frightening is that as we just reached the 10s now they are making reboots of these franchises remade just 5-10 years earlier.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre got remade in 2003, and got a prequel in 2006, but now the series is being rebooted by Texas Chainsaw 3D. Same happened with the superhero movie Spider-Man that got 3 parts in 2002, 2004 and 2007 before being rebooted again in 2012.
1-2 titles a year is quite a lot, I hardly can remember any good game since 5 years.
Skyrim, Dragon Age 1, Starcraft 2, maybe Civ V and Masseffect 1.
I guess the last decade was very resourceful for the MMO genre, with wow, lineage, guildwars etc etc.
I'm also surprised with League of Legends, It feels like dumbed down dota version, yet it's so much more successful. Sadly, FPS has been dead for a long time.
Oh and Teamfortress was pretty cool, though it was released in 2007. On the other hand, Diablo 3 was the biggest upset so far, like 10+ years of development for what?
Indeed, the last 5 years have been particularly bad, at last in mid 2000's we had all of HL2 stuff, portal, teamfortress, crysis, mirror's edge, and to a lesser extent pre-expansion WoW, which was pretty enjoyable. I also enjoyed red alert 3 (although the multiplayer feels unfinished) and LOTR: Battle For Middle Earth 2. Probably a few other games I enjoyed but can't even remember them now.
Haven't played Civ V or Skyrim yet. Will play them when I have the time, although I think I'll pass on Starcraft 2, I value atmosphere in RTS which SC2 seems to be lacking..

I wonder how old this guy is. When I started with NHLPA93, the consecutive titles didn't really revolutionize the genre, in fact even back in the 90's running joke was "COMING IN THE NEXT NHL, THE PUCK CHANGES COLOUR BY THE HOME TEAM". Video game crash didn't affect finns, because c64 was the first machine in the family and every game was basically pirated.
Kickstarter has challenged the financing model in the PC realm and is responsible of making the PC horizon brighter than it has been in a long time. Anywhere from Chris Roberts making a new space sim and Project Eternity to Double Fine Adventure and Wasteland 2, the veterans gave the middle finger to geezers in suits and communed with their lifelong fans.
His speculation about PS4, false. Is ME3 a poor title? Only to nitpicking comic book guys, who can't get over about 1 percent not tying some mundane details together, while the 99 percent of the game is amazing. So is Deus EX:HR, Witcher 2, Skyrim, Guild Wars 2. The games aren't getting worse outside our niche, the people are just getting more cynical.
Speaking of SWTOR, where the fuck they sunk the 200 mil? Besides the immersive cutscenes, the game is totally wank. The game looks like shit and plays like cunt. Boring and outdated.
I liked the introduction of the '83 crysis which I was not aware of, and the general stock market discussion.
In general, thinking that producers are evil by defaul is wrong, but seeing what some of the big ones are doing calls for some rage. While a lot of innocent developers may end up in troubles, the fall of some of the giants could be beneficial in the long term.
Wouldnt mind EA going bankrupt first, infact i hope it happens. Companies like that dont deserve to rape peoples wallets yearly by selling the exact same shit. Hope this video stirs some shit up, but for me i already know all this (cept for that 83 crisis :P )
inb4 'just dont buy it'. theres nothing much to replace their games, kinda feel theyre cornering people with their bullshit (weird as it sounds)
heh, some people just really like games, or uhh (i) used to. im extremely careful on what i buy but i still fall for it now n then. having bought bf3+premium for 100 euros, and now its completely abandoned with bf4 announced. bf3 still has plenty of bugs :/
aint helping that this new generation of kids believe this is all normal, to them EA games is GREAT. mommy and daddy are paying 100 eur anyways right!?
That is why I pirate games and only buy those that I want to own, as a show of pride or support for the companies that made them.
And I am sure as people will get more and more bitter piracy will go up and sales down. Which will leave developers at a dilemma of either making better games or fighting piracy. And just purely fighting piracy will not solve a thing and ultimately drive away your customers.
and I doubt that games are marketed for the kids that rely on mom and dad. It's more the late teens and young adults where the market really is and also ma and pa wont keep buying crap games the kid loses interest after couple of hours.
ive grown tired of pirating believe it or not, especially with alot of games having always online drm these days, making it more of a hassle to get things to work. i tend to stick to steam sale games with the occasional full priced game.
i do think we are at that drm stage right now where companies actually believe piracy is killing gaming. just a few more steps before things crash, and frankly, i cant wait for it to happen either! :D
