- DHS
- DHW (hopefully)
- Quakecon. So far there's no news about ugc (for more than a year), adroits, that netherlands lan or anything else.

How about we the community donate some prize money for both dreamhacks? faceit, russians? That way there's a higher incentive for top players to attend.

Also I think there should be a list of people that won't be accepted at next dh because they signed up for previous ones and didn't bother trying to attend, which is the reason quake was going to be out of the tournament. Ins is a prime example.

Was stated plenty times before. It's not about the money or prize pool, people just drop out 1 hour before the tournament which renders admining a pain in the ass and it a big middle finger to the organizers.

Most probably carmac doesn't know about what's going on with qvak since IEM dropped it. Nowadays the online scene is more alive than ever, q3 included, but he can't know since he doesn't play quake to begin with. All that is community-driven.

No Esport SM is a swedish championship for SC2, CS:GO, Super Streetfight 4, FIFA 13

Two months to go and no announcement. If they're not gonna announce it right now then they shouldn't be surprised about low attendance again.

I think they should go for a 8 player tournament, because 16 players simply won't fill up. Heck, 8 (top)players is hard to fill up.

we'd be very fortunate if dreamhack gives quake yet another chance. they were the only one supporting the game on LAN in europe (adroits being a one-off and the money hasn't been handed yet), time and again, forfeit after forfeit, even when IEM dropped it

If you don't realise that FACEIT is actually making a lot of money on this then I have some news for you. They are doing great things, but money is probably a bigger motivation than generosity.

Well, I think it's understandable to think otherwise and I just wanted to clarify this, but if you think about it from his point of view then it does seem a bit weird if they have to pay for the studio and flights etc. and all they have is "merely" 2000 viewers.

It's only when you think further that things become more clear. A studio can be setup anywhere to look decent, I have a room available and could do it. Youngsters can often rent something from the cultural desk at their town. The furniture and everything would be a 1 time (potentially costly, I'll admit that) purchase and flight tickets are pretty cheap nowadays. +-50€ to fly back and forth between Brussels and Manchester (http://i.snag.gy/q8Y2S.jpg).

If somebody wants to fly out to Belgium we can set something up right there and then :D

if it happens and goes smoothly, the winter one could be excellent . we're really fortunate the top players love the game and still play even if we only have online tournaments, with them still being present, it'd be a shame to end it like this : av3k retiring, cypher not playing his third place game and a lot of people dropping at the last minute

It's just not so popular amongst the masses anymore, I think that's the issue. I just went to a LAN event last weekend and signed up for the Quake 3 compo. 12 people signed up out of 200. This is how it went:

2 poules Bo3, I was in poule 2 so I don't know what happened in poule 1.
3 players played 1 match out of 6 and forfeited all the rest. The other 2 players played 1 match against me and forfeited the 2nd map.

Brackets then, the 4 best players from the poules went on, incl. the players that actually forfeited matches, because there were so little players. They didn't want to play so I went straight from the quarters to the finals.

They had setup rules and gave us 3 maps, however if players agreed they could play any other map listed in an extended mappool. Every time I approached someone to setup the match and I asked them which map they wanted from the 3-map pool they had never heard of the maps (cpm1a, hub3aeroq3 and ztn3tourney1).

They came to the LAN for League of Legends, Starcraft 2 and CSGO. They didn't really know Quake, they just seemed to have heard about it being the esports game "a long time ago".

That's the state Quake is in. I brought up to change Q3 with QL on their forums and got 9 votes against 1 to keep it Q3, as QL is the latest installment and somewhat actively played and hosted.

Made me sad and 1 motherboard richer :(

yeah it clearly has that "old game" tag but even if you don't know anything about the game, you show a frag movie to somebody and they'll tell you it's spectacular (because... well, it is)

that's the main selling point, I think, people don't know about it and come to see starcraft/dota but still hang around the main stage and they should be able to enjoy it

actually I don't think it's been drop because it's not popular enough, it looked like it was more about the lack of professionalism making the organizers think "why bother ?"

and dreamhack shouldn't have such a hard time selling that tournament to a sponsor because the number of viewers is always good. even if those suits don't know anything about gaming, this should be enough to get some "B sponsor". it's still quake, it's a known name and carries some weight altough the "upside" seems pretty hard to quantify indeed, unless something major happens, new players aren't going to pop up. but you still have the core community representing a few thousands, better than nothing if you can't advertise in dota/LoL/sc in a major way

it's pretty sad to talk about quake in such a way but that's how it is and it could be much much worse, so let's just enjoy the ride

Where would the money be coming from?They have no sponsors that I would know of (at least they don't advertise any) and the stream has measly numbers in the grand scheme of things. At the same time they have tons of staff taking care of the production, organization and website and invest big amounts of money in prizes.
Of course right now they are in a phase when they finalize the system, try to bring their production to perfection and make themselves known in the scene, hoping to find sponsors and extend into more popular games once they feel their system is ready. But there is no way they don't operate at a huge loss right now.

Not every initiative is created to earn money. QL itself has always been a moneywaster for everyone involved, id, iem, sponsors, dh, etc..

As far as we know faceit was created by quake players to stream and save quake, in a time there was literally nothing going on.

It'd be better to have 4 lans a year, with quakecon (intel/ventrilo), two dreamhacks (apparently ram companies like quake) and another that's community driven yet stable lan every year, for example ugc or even better something in the US. Seems like adroits didn't pay last year's prizes........and that's it really, that's QL's potential. As of now there are literally 0 confirmed lans for 2013, so that wish might be a bit optimistic.

Wouldn't it be weird to have a QuakeCon without a Quake? :(

I believe for a Quake LAN, you need a reasonable amount of players to come to the LAN for Quake. Not just invite the top 8 players, but that's my opinion.

Well, it's basically how the Quake community has always reacted in the past.

People that moved on (Carmac and DjWheat to name some) were slandered and so were the tournaments that dropped Quake. It seems to be hard to recognize how much further Quake has gotten with the of some of these people.

The hive mind doesn't seem to understand that love for a game will only get you so far. Facts are simply stating the competitive game for the big money is over and with that also the incentive to hold LANs. People that love to play this game more than any other can continue to do so in the many community-driven tournaments which are hosted online, no LANs are needed for that.

and djWHEAT totally didn't defend Riot at every step, say fuck ESR and not do anything for quake for years. As 2GD said, he can have tunnel vision at times and for quite a long time he's only really seen money and growth instead of the place where he came from.
Carmac is a totally different case and I agree that he did lots to help Quake, but he is a little bit of a hypocrite.

QL is "alive", has daily monetary tournaments, potential lans, relatively high activity as far as fast paced FPS games go et cetera.

"Quake" (3, cpm, live) has been proclaimed "dead" since 2004 and yet here we are, still runing tournaments, still seeing new blood reach (sub)top.

Doom 4 hasn't not received a single positive review, it will only get worse once it's released.

Google trends has nothing to do with QL activity.

Quake live just need better marketing/advertising, better politics and it could grow easily imo. There is a niche of people tired of new cods/bf etc.

like me, I played cod4 promod competitively mostly, cod is a bit dead too, friends are not playing... but I don't have place to move... Reborn, refreshed Quake will be fine for me.

I really hope Reborn is the next big thing. FPS deserves to be at the top! The skill level is so high you cant even explain! hehe.

One real bonus for Quake to me is that you only need 2 players for a duel. The same applies to Street Fighter. No dicking around organising teams.

Only one I know is qlranks, supposedly duel-only.

QL's potential is at most 5k viewers, realistically 4k. If syncerror finally implements embedded streams it could go up to....6-7k really. All those numbers are nothing nowadays.

Though in the end those two are not the reason why QL is out of dh, considering organizers love it to the point of losing money in it and was there no matter if it had to be in a dark corner.
