It's rare but it happened today and yesterday (i had a 1hr+ straight dueling session for each). Don't recall this ever happening except in duel and when i stopped dueling it may have possibly happened outside of quake but very rarely like around 3 times in 8 months period time which is why i never really cared much for it. But when i was actively dueling it was happening quite frequently if not more in real life. The weirdest thing about this is when it was happening pretty frequently i could sense that this short term memory loss is about to happen i could prevent it somehow. But i can also make it occur if i tried to think about "nothing". Hard to explain. Also it probably happened more than 6 times now that i think about it, probably around 10 times. Compared to real life in quake i could never sense when it's about to happen. A lot of these stuff could just be coincidence but i'm just talking from experience. It' only lasts for 30-1min and i just like to rest in bed for a quick-fix.

EDIT: I guess it's like when your grandpa has amnesia and doesn't know who you are but know that it's someone very important to them but obviously my case is much more milder and only lasts 30-1min.

Given the duration, this may be related to a migraine of some kind. You can get many migraine type symptoms without even having the headache part. For example, I suffer from ocular migraines - funky vision issues, last a couple hours, no pain. All of these things are usually stress related.

When you describe feeling it come on, then preventing it, you're consciously stepping away, reducing your stress level. I would really suggest taking a good 1/2 hour break after every 30 to 45 minutes of play time. Go do something else or relax to let the stress go away that's built up during your dueling.

Have you done it around people. What have their observation's been about you during these times?

Sounds indeed serious. I cannot relate to anything that you just said. I know that sometimes a 10 minute game feels uber short and the next game feels really long but that really depends on the pace of the game and the opponent.

but its really odd that you forget how to play a map. its more or less already innate. if you have played a map over a year you should know by heart how many jumps you need to get from one end to another.

whats weird though is that it stops when you stopped playing duel. that is just really scary.

I don't know. The fact that it only happens in duel makes it less scary for me which is why i never bothered to check it out although your right, i should get it checked out.. Taking a wild guess here but might be something to do with more thinking in duel (e.g. thinking where your opp is and timing) or the smaller maps. Because i read online about some door theory where you enter a room and you forget where you came from or something. Still wouldn't explain why it happens in real life though when i daydream.

Okay, let's put it this. If you are able to get into duel so deep that you forget everything around you, then you are 'in the game' this is not a bad thing at all.

If you can get rid of all emotions outside the game (girlfriend annoying, school shit, fuck I have to buy food later, or go to the gym) vs. emotions in-game (god. i hate that little 20ms prick, thinks he is cool and what not. let me guess he is a one map wonder - why did i fuckung decide to play him? this is ridiculous. im gonna ragequit anything now. naw, i keep on going, come on, get serious, *urname*) then you are starting to get the real game - the meta game if you will.

I day dream in real-life as well. heck, i have dreamt about quake. and when i cannot sleep i sometimes run around aerowalk in my head. just jumping virutally in my head trying new stuff.

what happens to me when i play quake is that i forgot all my problems that i have in that particular moment. all the shitty things i have to do, the lack of money or the things that are annoying me. when you play, it is somewhat a "clean slate". a state as new as it can get.

On a more serious note, I fully agree with you on this, however I find myself playing better with a clean conscience.

yeah, a psychiatrist would probably advise to stop playing but the again other 'real' games accomplish the very same thing.

I can somewhat relate to what you say. I honestly think that it's early symptoms for depression (a burnout) and quake can be a catalyst for this. I'm no psychiatrist, but I have been depressed before and I do know from personal experience that stepping away from Quake (and other things, obviously) helped A LOT.

If in on to something here, I would guess it's about how quake can make you look down on yourself, especially in duel, when you fail to improve your game. It is about the competitive nature of the game, and in other competitive games like SC2 and SSFIV, I believe similar symptoms exists.

Simply put; competition in games/sports puts the performer in mental and physical strains, therefore increases the performers total stress in his everyday-life. If you can't handle this stress and/or are not prepared for it, you might end up in a burnout or feel symptoms for a burnout.

At last, some people handle stress better than others, but if you feel symptoms for what could be a depression (memory loss is one), then you should take care and try to stay free in your mind.

For the first part, everyone gets immersed when doing something completely focused. Focus on what you should be doing (in real life) and problem solved, if not you'll die of starvation lol.

I'd treat that as exhaustion. Happens to me when I'm tired and play the game. I assume in duel you notice this the most because you have to concentrate all the time. In ca for example it doesn't matter, you can play it literally mindless.

However, if it disturbs you and it happens in real life, see a doctor.

actuallyi remember a former ctf player who had the same problem.but it was a serious mental disorder and he had to take severe medication. not a doc but was some psychosis i think. he described it as "suddenly awakening and having no idea whats going on"

Do you forget who you are or do you just lose your sense of identity in the real world? If it's the latter, just get out more, really. I'm not being condescending here; I've felt this way before. It's probably a symptom of depression or something. I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty sure just going outside, exercising, etc. will help you a lot.

This is a fairly common condition I see on this website. This is why I used the term victims of gaming for some.

Some gamers are real gamers, but some gamers have mental issues and play games as a form of sedation for those issues because it just happens to be compatible with their lifestyle stemming form that.

Vedic, Kdawg, Brandon, Sonic, Lethe, Potato, Megaman and quite a few more display the traits associated with this.

And they even know this, which is why when you tell them this, they'll spend the rest of their time trying to undo what you said to them by trying to make you feel the same as you made them feel because they cannot actually change this.

My only interest in games was the technology behind them and getting to a high level understanding by only playing the top tier games in the respected genres.

Once I hit that stage where I knew I would have to dump exponential amounts of time and resources just to get a tiny bit better, I prefer to stop playing because I know the only way to go higher is to dump hideous amounts of time in and its not healthy and definitely becomes less healthy the older you get.

This will probably piss off at least one of the above.
