serious posting: sets aside a portion of ram as a disk drive.

I have 16gb but I don't need that much so I have my windows/internet temp and cache folders set up on a ramdisk. Speeds up access and unzipping etc. if you've got a regular hard drive. In my case just lessens the number of writes on my SSD.

I also use it as a scratch disk for photoshop etc. instead of thrashing my mechanical drive.

You can set it up to reset each time or make an image to read/write from. In which case you'll retain data after turning your pc off. This can increase boot and shutdown times a bit though.

Also you can install smaller games or apps to it and boot them up faster :]

this, although you should realize that /tmp and /cache can get quite huge depending on what you do (photo and video editing for example) and you should consider putting an hard limit to the amount of ram it can allocate.

i currently have my OS (fedora using tmpfs) and firefox in ram.

You would lose data in some cases though, like in the event of an unsaved word document and the power goes out, right? I'm not sure how the imaging works for ramdisk or backup caching works for office but this seems like a scenario where it's a bad idea to use a ram disk.

Imaging is basically write to disk on shutdown and read on startup.
Office could be an issue, but assuming you're writing something that important (or for any length of time) you need to be saving regularly anyway (with backup copies too) :P

What is a ram disk and how does it work?
A 'ram disk' is a term used when you use part of your RAM as if it was a regular disk. It works by dedicating portion of the RAM, formatting it and mounting it as any regular hard drive.

How do you benefit from a ram disk?
Using RAM as a disk is the fastest way to access data, the gain is speed. As long as you keep the device powered on, the data will be available at the speed of your RAM.
