we loved cooller while he was alltimes 3rd 2nd. we loved av3k when he lost to rapha and decided to retire. we love czm and voO even tho they dont win stuff anymore. on the contrary we never really loved rapha even tho he constantly won.

its harsh to say esr loves winners. esr likes people that everybody likes - charismatic personalitys with unique characteristics in their styles, friendly and humorous persons that can take a coarse joke. players that have a history behind them and linked to their names forever. players that show weaknesses like beeing depressed, sad and demotivated and stand up back again afterwards. surely also those who are dedicated and hence improve. in short esr likes people that you can look up to. and that is not about the sucess in game only but also the person behind it.

how is cypher not winning in quake again? in last 3 weeks he lost faceit final to cooller and ruined everyone else in every competitive match I saw. I think he should take cooller's example (not in retiring:]) and change his mindset regarding the game. relax, loose pressure, stop letting esr retards get to him and crush again. same goes for av3k tbh. they need to realise that the scene changed for good, but their potential to dominate everybody is still there. i saw it in av3k's match against k1llsen (who I think got all the bullshit I'm laying here some time ago and came back to form big time). he was tense and playing for the result and not his best game. come on guys: you can do this shit, cooller's giving good example.

You may be trolling, but this is a place to post my reply, no just to you, but to all who are somehow gravitating around this topic.

I think what people seem oblivious to, or simply do not care, is what Cypher (or Avek, for the matter) is living at the moment.

They've been into Quake since they were teenagers, achieving results that would set them apart from 99.999% of their peers. This goes to all levels, from money (realize what it means to win 16000$ at Quakecon, as teenager, when you live in a country where the average salary is 300$), to traveling the world, to getting exposure to the public etc. And this was possible because of their talent and dedication; they put their lives into this.

Now they are in their twenties, and Quake can no longer support them. It's a turning point in their career, and not necessarily a good one. They live in countries where you don't have many opportunities, and may not really have options to move to a different country (Belarus is not in the EU regulations, for instance). Whatever level of education they have, for a non-esport job they have to compete with people that spent the last 10 years either in school or doing that job. This is very hard, even in easier, richer countries.

So, it is not a surprise if they have other things in their mind, if they are stressed and behave not exactly like gentlemen. It's a hard moment of their lives. Reducing this to "oh, he lost this or that and now rages" is plain stupid. Give them time, and they will sort out what to do professionally, and eventually go back to their former, happier, personalities.

To conclude, to me this is a measurement of the failure of esport today, and is precisely what good people should (and are) trying to change.

I agree with your general point that this isn't easy for them, and so I understand their comments about how sad it is that Quake is dead, the other games are shitty and the community's pressure on the players is a bit silly at times. However, sometimes they do act in silly manner. If they do in public, it's their own fault.

You might be not be talking about those moments, but I'm just saying. Sometimes they act silly, and there's not much more to it.

That's all good, but don't be a crybaby, ragequitting finals, etc. Quit, go inactive, or play if you feel like it, but be a little bit more considerate of the other player and the people watching.

edit: I wasn't really fence-sitting when dm6 was re-re-reintroduced, I was kinda disappointed by this move from faceit. It felt misplaced and catering towards a very small group of people, but the recent dm6 matches were hands down such a joy to watch.

Expected some one sided rapey games but somehow dm6 proved to be a good map.
I'm still not quite sure if it should remain in the next season (summer), but for now, let's keep it in for a few more weeks. Players are offering great matches, some upsets, sick shots etc

This is a bad argument. Silence wasn't dropped because of the viewers. Campgrounds wasn't kept because of the viewers. Campgrounds was kept because many, and not just old school, players pick it. Silence was one of the least popular maps, like Hektik. Hektik, though even less popular, was kept.

However. Let's say Silence is kept. How does that mean we get new talent? Even if say ppl like strenx and Cypher get trashed on Silence because they don't care to practice it, they still beat these "new guys" on other maps. Aaaand, many new players don't even excel on Silence, but on older maps. Shall I say, for example, Sev3n? His best maps are Aerowalk and Blood Run, two of the oldest...

So it's a lot more complicated than how you paint the situation. And I'm not against Silence, but honestly, I think it has zero to do with new talent, and viewers and what not.

When Silence was relatively new, I watched Baksteen dominate Cypher on it (for example). This would happen much more often with a fresher map pool.

Imagine 4 or 5 fresh maps in a map pool, without old whiney pros being able to drop back to the maps they have been playing for 10 years.

silence is a bit too much stuffed with stuff imo. a bit too many edges and collumns. also i usually dont like doors in maps (maybe vertical doors where a bit cooler though, i dunno).
the teleporters seem random in a way, that watching a game becomes less fun.

the old maps are just damn cool. i tried to make a maps with radiant, but failed completely. this is an artform, that i dont master. but i got a very different view on maps now, and all i can say, the existing maps are really really well done. not many can do stuff like this, seriously. it looks simple, but it isnt. at all.

another thing is, a map is made of angles and distances. actually its pretty hard to make something new, thats not already been done, lolz.

As far as I'm concerned a new map shouldn't be put the map pool just because it's new (unless it's to test it in a tournament environment) and an old map shouldn't be taken out just because it's old and visa versa.

'Better' is subjective bullshit that means we're still playing the same maps as 10 years ago.

We're still playing them because they're better than the new ones, period. Hektik, Tox, silence, sinister ect don't compare at all to ZTN, DM6, DM13, Aerowalk ect in any real way. They're less balanced and in general produce far less skillful and interesting games than any of the new ones do irrespective of player experience while remaining unpopular amongst both players and viewers.

The only thing adding in a bunch of new maps would do it let players worse than those in top 8 do slightly better for a week before the rest of the old pros get accustomed with the maps and destroy them like they always did because they're just better on a fundamental level, just like they did on Hektik, Tox, Silence and every other new map introduced.

They would compare if you played them for the past ten years. Nostalgia is the main reason old maps are so appealing, making the habit even harder to break. There should always be a map circuit, where competitive maps are played for a certain amount of time before new maps are introduced. May as well wait for the game that replaces Quake for anything like that to happen, unfortunately.

As I said, irrespective of experience. These are just better maps, to those that have played 10 years to those that have only played for 2 years and to those that have never played quake in their lives to those that only watch and don't play.

There's a reason these maps have stuck around over something like T2 and if this is all about 'experience' or whatever then there's a ton of 'older new' maps that can be used that players barely know how to play that are a lot better than some of the ones we have in the pool right now.

1400 elo people shouldnt talk about this. Lol that you think that Tox is unbalanced. It has consistent respawns, initial spawns are always fair and most importantly, theres 1 50 hp bubble and thank Jezuz 2 YAs. And tox is actually quite old, its from the CPMA days.

And tox produces amazing games. Have you seen the Avek k1llsen game for example??

Other maps, like Silence, depend alot on if you get a good or bad spawn when you get fragged. Tox always has the same =)

1600, which is almost entirely aim so I guess it doesn't mean much, I don't play duel. And I think I have all the right to talk about those maps when I was able to beat latrommi on Tox despite being outplayed in literally every possible respect while not timing any items at all, bearing in mind I lose to 1400 elos all the time and tox is my worst map. Things like that happen all the time, you see significantly worse/straight up bad players beating pros occasionally, something that doesn't happen nearly as much if at all on any of the other maps. Just watch Qlranks for a bit, maps like Tox and Hektik are maps where how much better you are than your opponent matters the least

He could beat me on a bad day drunk on his worst map, of course he could, but I won on Tox because that's how the map is. Skill matters far less, and that's shown not only by my game against Latrommi but the countless matches I've seen where 1600-1900 Elos are able to even get close to beating some of the best players in the world.

This doesn't happen on Dm13, Dm6, Ztn, hell even Aerowalk, period. A player that isn't even timing items, let alone doing anything else, should not be able to beat someone significantly better than them, even if they get insanely lucky.

Just seems like typical burnout syndrome. Its easy to tell he never enjoyed SM and the QL enviroment is very unfavoring for any serious player. I think what happened is he reached his goal he was working hard for through the years, than started to putting in half effort which by now visible in the results causing general depression / disinterest. Every mildly succesful person experiencing this once in a while, but of course you can fall hard too hard from the bottom of the pyramid, people who used to reign on top usually get drawn into it much deeper.
