A bit the opposite, I'm actually smaller than I was over 2 years ago. Used to be into weight training/gymnastics/martial arts/track stuff/sprinting etc, but I had an injury 2 years ago and then a major surgery just a year ago and I've just been able to go back to the gym for the first time in the last 2 months.

Ah, okay good to know. I know the feeling. I had a really bad inury myself and I could not work out for over 6 months. It was a horrible time - now it's okay again. I cannot lift as heavy anymore but at least I can run/do some weightlifting.

I still see a physical therapist every week.

Yeah the 8 months after the surgery was the lowest point of my life, all that stuff can be pretty fucked up.

Mentally, it was really the hardest. I could not use my right hand in a way that even allowed me to play Quake Live without pain. So basically I could not work out nor spend time playing or even working on the computer. I used to actively play TDM and CTF up to that point. Had a nice time,was involved in playing a lot of cups.

For me, this was the worst thing happening. Made me realise how important my hands are. Sounds funny, but it isnt.

Luckily, during that time I met the girlfriend I have now. She did not really like buff guys. The time I met her, I already lost like 10kg (dunno what that in stone is, but you figure it out :D).

Now, being able to play for 1-2 hours without too much pain, I revaluated my situation and started playing duel actively. I just hit the 2000 elo mark, yeah :D

In addition to your video:
For me the mental part of tdm was always the nicest. I sure had good aim, but I always seemed to know where the opponent was so it gave me the opportunity to always be the guy with the least amount of deaths. Dodging, desicion making, rotating on items, information from coms.. putting the pieces together in tdm can be quite challenging.

I have started enjoy the mental part of duel more and more though. I also would love more insights from you and not so much "play by play" like you used to do in the beginning.

I doubt it as he used to play a bit of starcraft when a load of us guys from cpm made a sc irc chan to start in, we all sucked! ... I'm sure he was playing with us then.

"QL theory" will always be abstract. Where in poker and chess you can actually solve alot of situations. You cant make direct comparisions between these types of games, but I do like the way of thinking ddk promotes. Its just that trial and error will always be a bigger part of getting good at an fps, compared to more solvable games.

The styles explanation is just plain wrong.
The % of succes analysis you gave doesnt make any sense. Something working 30% time and someting 70% and then you choose the lower because at this moment your aim is actually stronger etc etc. All that additional stuff should do, is alter the percentages to get it enough to your favor, where it becomes the better "EV" play. If its not altered enough, then you should NEVER do it, from theory perspective.
But theres definitely styles, that I agree with.

High masters in 2 months is impressive as hell

I'd like to add though that, I had 2-3 months of Brood War under my belt before delving into SC2. This gave me a decent enough base point for my mechanics. So my starting point was diamond in this statement of "2 months". I made masters in the first month and rose up to high masters in the second month. How many games did you have when you advanced to masters?

Or was it more like: meh lets play a few games a week so we might get there eventually, one day?
I mean, did you start with the purpose of actually achieving masters or just play for fun and ending up improving that much?

from diamond to masters was probably around 100 games, from masters to high masters I'd guess around closer to 400.

the goal was to get to grandmasters, I can't play a game like sc2 casually, the fun for me is in improving and getting to as best a level as possible. but I stopped when I realised the amount of time I was putting in was increasing but my gains were slowing significantly so I eventually lost interest and started learning street fighter instead :P. then I went back to some ql tdm and played eurocup with sitto, more or less.

I really like your approach to improving, though it should to directed towards more experienced players, especially in Quake where having good tools (combat skills) allows for much more efficient tactics crafting.
While researching new ones without sufficient basics might lead to wrong conclusions which eventually will slow one's progress.

For all those more interested in subject I highly recommend reading "How Life Imitates Chess" by Garry Kasparov, that's some great input by known chess champion. Although it's not gaming-oriented.

The amount of analysis you put in the game is great. With an approach like that, there really is much to be gained in esports. That's why I love Quake, all those considerations at such an incredible speed, it's really amazing to watch. My neurons are just happy. Keep it going!

Watching or even studying demos can depend on the game.

In Quake 2, demos became a necessity, something almost every great player did. In a 15min duel or a 20min 4on4, there are strategies based on map layouts, movement techniques, and just plain old good decision-making that a demo reveals.
Some "recent" NA q2 players(now ql) like DaHanG and naymlis owe a great deal to the tons of Euro/Scandie/CIS player demos posted.

Didn't Thorin just talk about when he learned that Cooller was asking for pov demos from opponents he beat? He said Cooller was looking for that little extra edge to move his game up.

you're supposed to watch demos of the other player's pov from matches where you get pwned, dummy.

when I get pwned hard I usually know the reasons that made me lose.

Losing slightly or slightly winning would make it much more relevant to watch.

ddk you have amazing insight into the game we all love, its a wonder the community is so small in comparison to other games. There really isnt enough content out there that goes into this much depth, its really fasinating. Makes me realise how little I know about this game I've been playing since q2 days.

You should create 68 min vids of each section you spoke about, really go into the "nerdy" detail, breaking it down bit by bit. Bring in more pro's like Rapha to provide even more depth. Its reasons like this vid that quake is slowly making its way back into the limelight.

We used to discuss strategies and tactics in Quake for hours, damn I miss those days. Felt so rewarding when you actually all stuck to them and played a great dm14 or dm7 game.

Well, maybe it's just me, but I'm not gonna watch ddk sitting in a room for 68 minutes anyway. Nor, if it's ddk and Thorin on a rotation. I did listen to the whole video, though, while doing other stuff. I think it's just hard to make a 68-minute-long interview visually interesting.
