ya 99.999998% of people that get stung by a bee survive, just like 99.99998% of the people who skydive survive. This isn't anything statistic, its about environment which he grew up in. a glaring sign of bad parenting... His dad took it as a joke when he said he had killed his mother and in the past took it as a joke when he threatened to kill his mother??? my dad used to call me over and tell me to never curse @ 16 if I called my sister a bitch (which btw she was a total cunt sometimes). but ya, this is kind of a freak accident (????), and not all families turn out like this.

So, what's the solution? Mandatory parenting classes?

My point is there is nothing we can realistically do as a whole to prevent stuff like this from happening. There are too many variables that go into creating a situation like this.

It's not uncommon. I got a .410 shotgun on my 8th birthday to learn how to properly use and handle firearms and hunt.

It's also not uncommon for 14-15 year olds to receive a vehicle which is arguably even more dangerous.

Don't you think you can be taught how to use and handle a firearm without owning one? And at 8? Wow!

I believe it's actually illegal for anyone under 18 to purchase or own any sort of firearm, but I don't think it's too uncommon for people much younger to shoot or hunt.

In my case my parents weren't dummies and I didn't have full unsupervised access. They kept the gun locked up and I could only use it with an adult present until I was older. I was around 13 or so when they trusted me enough to go out on my own with it and I did so primarily to kill snakes (we had copperheads all over the place).

Back in high school, one of my classmates argued that Quake makes you a psychopath, because of its theme, while he was a Call of Duty player. I argued that, because Quake is complete fiction, and these guns don't exist (at least not in this way) in real life: it's easier to tell apart reality from game. This is important because in many cases where children shot people with guns the defense was: they couldn't tell reality apart from the game. I think, therefore, video games with realistic guns and violence should be much more damaging.

But! People have killed over Farmville, too, so maybe it's not the type of the game, but the average intelligence of the playerbase. Or maybe there's no relation what-so-ever. We must also note that most of the defense blaming violence on video games is just a bogus, because if they can prove it was the video game causing temporary insanity, their client will get less or no jail years at all.

Still, it's terribly stupid to give your 13-year-old kid a gun. A real gun. But it's also our society. The way we are going there are more and more mentally fucked up loners with no friends. We have quite a few in our community as well. And I'm pretty sure if Quake would be bigger, there would be cases of Quake players going berserk on their own mom as well. Because it's also that CoD has a huge playerbase so the chance of something like this occuring is much greater.

Furthermore, though people say violence nowadays is getting out hand and there is more and more, it's actually not true. It's just now with the way information is spreading, everyone gets to know about them. There were horrible acts of evil in the past. Tons. In fact, the number of violence have never been this low in the history of humans.

So what does that leave us with? Maybe it's natural selection. Maybe we need stuff like these to realize "hey, you shouldn't give your kid a gun, or he might shoot you because he's just a kid, who doesn't know what he's doing". It's sad, alright. But to this date there had never been a time when humans could live together in peace. Maybe there never will be. Maybe it's the human nature.

Lol, most of the players strip the textures to a brown mess , and all the ambient sounds are taken away. Most modern day quakers play the game for the gameplay, by the time they are finished with the game there is no theme beyond the gameplay mechanics which are simply superior to everything else.

Although one thing I am thinking about is unrealistic vs. more realistic video games. Sure one should be able to tell the difference either way, but I just can't like games like CoD and the like, because they look like playing actual war and one thing still fresh in my mind is the Wikileaks video with the shooting from the helicopter, I'm sure you remember, too.. and with drones coming up, maybe it's one step towards loosing touch with the other side of the story and just treating lives like pixel. But I haven't come to terms with it yet, because after all, it's only in the minds of those playing those games, they have the control, the emotions, their view of the world will decide how they play and see it. And then it comes to education and parenting again. But maybe it's a question of culture, too. So much of popular culture - yes, even South Park - sometimes really shocks me. The amount of sarcasm and irony needed to cope with this shit freezes me to the bones sometimes.

there's always going to be a select few who have no chance of rehabilitation and because of that, no place in society. there are no obvious solutions. advances in medical technology to identify these types by genome sequencing followed by corrective behavioral therapy, heavy sedation or euthanasia at birth might be a possibility. crazy right wing theories aside, some will always slip the net and this is far from the last deranged story we will read. stepping over civil liberties because of the very few is something we really need to have at the forefront of our minds, though.
