You are. I thought it could help people who don't know why they're struggling in everyday life. I mean when there is an explanation you can start thinking of strategies to overcome it.

What I didn't mean to say was that I suspect people to be autistic or something, I know that it mostly doesn't show and people can be very good in social interaction, but sometimes it can be overwhelming and you feel the urge to retreat, which comes down to trying to restrict and better control incoming sensual input/information. Like Picmip ;)

I'm just interested in psychology and how this all works, thought maybe it could interest other people, too.

or maybe you are usually bored by "normal" interactions, maybe because the sensual input is actually too low. ... and that may be because filters are too high, so if you open up to let more information in it could suddenly get interesting, filters meaning here judgement about value of information (ahh this is just idle chit-chat).

no but i think alot of people on the net these days havent got the slightest idea what autism means, while using it as an insult. besides that, im not sure there are many people here on esreality that will be interested in this subject, or can relate to it (might be wrong on the latter, see jamerio). but good luck in your quest.

hmm I actually succeeded in downloading configs and getting them to run, but when I made changes they didn't stick, so always when I restarted I had to reenter everything manually in QL. The same when I opened the config and changed information manually (like Playermodel, Name, Clantag, binds etc.). So I guess I have to write my own.. what I really need is the clock in the middle and the weapons as symbols, for a start.

do "/writeconfig autoexec" when you're satisfied with the settings and it'll never go away!

can also go to ql folder after that and mark the cfg as read only

I agree that the term "autist" isn't used the right way here, that's why I said that I don't like this kind of ability to detect movement be labeled as a "disorder".

it's not about what u r able to do, it's about what u r not able to do which qualifies it as a disorder.

I don't have severe autism. I'm only new to the site. Most hints rely on background knowledge I just don't have. I don't have a history in trolling or gaming either. I just love Quake.

I'm generally interested in Psychology and factors that influence behaviour and communication/interaction abilities. Since I studied linguistics I came across sensual perception as a factor that may inhibit/influence interpretation of speech-acts.
Then I watched Quake and the incredible speed of the movement astounded me, so when I read this article this morning I just had to post it here, just to get some discussion going or something like that.
And last but not least I really believe that speaking of mental abilities and disabilities just as disorders doesn't get to the point, so when I see a study like that that may reveal some underlying cause I'm getting excited that this labelling may end at least, because it's mostly a matter of degrees (and even just luck) that makes one a high-grade intellectual or athlet and another just someone who is considered some sort of "loser". Also I have a cousin who has severe autism and lives in a mental institution. Not much to be done there anymore, but somehow I want to believe that if it would only be treated otherwise by society it could change something.

yeah i get what you mean. most people have a bad habit of judging, i do too sometimes :/. but i try not to and instead just see what makes people the way they are. ways of growing up, genetic predisposition, life experiences and all that, i guess alot of things factor in making it pretty complex.
i suppose your cousin sparked the main interest, amongst other things. hope he has a good life, as far as thats possible in society anno 2013. for me i believe in science/biology. always brings a smile to my face when i read about technological advancement. who knows what the future brings ^^

do i get this right that you read about some specific trait that comes (possibly not only) with autism and then generalize autism to everyone who possibly show that trait?

if this is the case go check out:
a) what autism is
b) what its symptoms are
c) what does neurodevelopmental disorder mean
d) what is necessary for its diagnosis and how it's diagnosed
e) what are generally the criteria for diagnosing a mental disorder
f) maybe check out aspergers and other pervasive developmental disorders and what their differences from autism are

Got a family member who worked on methods to detect autism in children before they learn (or not learn) to talk, and I had a shallow but prolonged exposure to the subject. Drawing any connection from it to playing videogames is genuinely naive, if not silly.

no I don't, and I said so. Got a little overexcited and just wanted to share to see what others think about that, I mean after all, if you have the ability to detect motion much faster than others it is possible that this may be due to finer grained perception-filters, which may lead to oversensitivity and the symptoms described in the article, which are associated with "Autism".

BUT as thuNDa rightly said, it is what you are not able to do which qualifies something as a disorder, so as Quakers are not restricted in other fiels of activity (I don't mean the things they could do, but don't want to because they prefer playing Quake ;) ), so the connection to Autism is really not rightly drawn.

Since I put the chance of helping someone with information over the risk of being bashed because of not having it thought through (or because the stereotyping associeted with it would lead the discussion in wrong directions), I posted it anyway, as I said, for those whom it may concern. Rehapapps comment might be helpful for those who think my over-generalization of the matter needs more background information. My focus has been mainly on the connection between perception and interaction, but there is always cognition in between, value-judgements and Salience, adjustment of filters and so on, so I think there is actually a wide range of possibilities between perception and how you deal with it. The cases which are labeled with "Autism" can't do anything about it (filters just too high), that's why they are labeled this way, and that's the main difference between Quakers and people with autism.

Now as for the topic at hand, you must differentiate between "quakers" (as in people playing that game) and people who are genuinely inclined towards fine and quick motion detection. What I am saying is that, among quakers, many will be completely average when it comes to the pure phyisiological ability to detect small changes (be it attention, concentration, reflex, hand-eye coordination)

Then, there's the learning aspect. Much of a quaker's ability to compete in a fast-paced environment has to do with a huge amount of experience, which enables him to KNOW how to react to various circumstances. That is precisely why a guy with completely mediocre reflexes and preception thresholds can actually get good at this game.

Then, there's the concentration aspect. Playing quake requires a great deal of focused attention, which is quite an energy-drainer. Doing so, you direct your resources to exactly this kind of fine motion detection.

My conclusion would be that quakers, as a whole, are not physiologically different from other game's communities. If there was an old delta force community, THOSE would have bene the guys who would have been the gods of small movement detection, since the delta force matches revolved around everyone having a sniper and reacting to a pixel-change in the distance.
