For a newcomer that uses 400 dpi, what you should do is not using accel and trying out sens 4.35 or something. What you want is something like 25cm/360, because in general terms quake sens has to be fast, comfortable at all times and not made entirely focusing on the lightning gun.

That fast sensation also depends on fov, resolution, mousepad friction among others, and we aware that's the rule of thumb thus not the only setting available. Personally I use different (lol) because of a ton of excuses and laziness, but if hadn't those I would play with what's described above. Keep it simple and without hindering yourself.

Just be yourself and find what works good for you. Using strenx config won't make you strenx, so it doesn't matter. I think the game would lose a lot of uniqueness if everybody used the same or similar setup. It's exciting to play against low/high sens, vanilla/accel and low/high FOV players. S.: Totally unrelated, but I found while messing with my mouse settings that, on Linux, using s_alsa_pcm "plughw:0.0" (direct alsa output?) instead of just "default" (pulseaudio output), significantly reduces the audio lag and makes QL feel much more fluid and responsive overall. It actually makes a huge difference on my pre-historic PC. :)

NEVER EVER CHANGE YOUR SENSITIVITY SETTINGS

You will lose all your muscle memory and it's just the best way to not improve at all.

If you're struggling in close fights, here's an advice : try to anticipate more the opponent's moves and put yourself in a position where he won't surprise you.
Also a personal tip : when i have to make a fast rocket shot like e.g. a guy jumping over my shoulder, I aim just as an noscope in cs. Like there's no crosshair and I try to keep the enemy in the center by looking at the edges of my screen. Works well so far for me.

I disagree, I had been using the same settings for about a year until a few days ago when I increased my sensitivity and changed some accel settings and my aim has improved drastically since. My elo has also gone up by about 100-200. I think sometimes changing your sensitivity settings can allow you to play in a different style and even think strategically different in game.

I think he means that muscle memory isn't what most gamers seem to think it is. It's not like "everything has to be exactly the same at all times!" If that was the case, nobody could become proficient at something like playing the piano, because he'd have to relearn everything every time he switched piano.

aiming is more accurate, when ur wrist is straighten out, the more u tilt, the worse aim gets. so better use high accel to make the turn. i use high sens+ high accel

Heaps of reasons...
For starters, it's logical... the sens value becomes the number of onscreen degrees moved per centimetre. ( 360 / 27 = 13.33 will give you a 27cm 360 sens ).
Yeah, the accel values might be a little less intuitive than 0.1@400dpi... but still, you can objectively compare accel values across a variety of dpi's... and accel values only really seem intuitive at low dpi's anyway, since it doesn't scale linearly.
Also, It's convertible, if everyone used it... you wouldn't have all these problems of 'what dpi does dahang use', just to name one example...
It's like the 'weapon config' thing in the menu... if everyone used that then testing out other people's cfgs would be simple and easy. You can adjust the key bindings to reflect your own without having to trawl through pages of illegible text in cfg files.
Get with the times people.

Also the weaponconfig variables are inferior to using bind command1;command2 because they only apply _after_ the weapon is raised and not before.

It is better to have that half second to adjust to whatever other settings you have for that bind. Fixing this would go a long way towards its adoption.

Still it isn't really less clutter, because while it cleans up the binds it adds clutter in the weaponconfig variables whereas before they were in one place together.

It's a good thing you asked, because I had it wrong. The settings are applied after the current weapon drops (but before it is raised).

When you switch weapons there are two intervals of time that take place.

One is the time given for the current weapon to lower, which was originally intended as the time it takes for the animation for the current gun's model to lower off the screen.

Next is the time for the selected weapon to raise up, which was originally intended as the time it takes for the animation of the selected gun model to raise up on the screen.

The animation alone wasn't the only reason for these, but you get the idea.

You cannot fire until both times are completed.

In QL these times have server side cvars: pmove_WeaponDropTime, and pmove_WeaponRaiseTime.

In ruleset QL these are both 200 ms, in PQL they are both 10 ms.

So if you use cg_weaponconfig, its settings are not applied until the current weapon drops, whereas they are applied instantly with a bind.

Example bind:

bind [key] "weapon 5 ; sensitivity x"

user presses [key], sensitivity is immediately changed to x.

Example weaponconfig:

bind [key] "weapon 5"
cg_weaponconfig_rl "sensitivity x"

user presses [key], 200 ms passes, then sensitivity is changed to x.

i'm currently using weaponconfig because i don't want to bind a lot of keys for weapons 9-12 and when there are games with them i just use mwheel to switch to them (and i have different zoom and crosshair for some weapons too)

This explains a lot. I tried converting my config to using weaponconfig about 18 months ago and found it really slow and sluggish so switched back to using binds. Stupid really to introduce such a cvar if it undermines ingame performance...

Yep. Actually considering their accel values, their overall sens is pretty much close except strenx (very low) and rapha (very high though feels great for some reason).

Yeah, he really has a different style than the others, with the very limited space he uses. It's also weird that he has the QcK hanging over the edge of the table, since it tends to bend a little near the edge then. :)

Anyway, this is where I found sens 2 on his weaponbinds. rapha-current.cfg -- although I checked the other two configs and those have sens 4.6 and 5 respectively. :)

The sets are for "weapon7".

The actual sensitivity in use is 5.

I find these threads really annoying when people don't post all the relevant details for their mouse config. The minimal set of info should also include:

1) DPI and Mouse - because often certain mice don't have the dpi stated e.g. WMO is typically between 400 and 415 dpi (from my experience, others may disagree)
2) FOV - makes a big difference e.g sens 4 at 90 fov is very different from sens 4 at 110 fov.
3) r_mode - debatable impact but many swear that r_mode 9 results in very different sensitivity from r_mode 24 for example.
4) Surface - although dosn't affect technical sensitivity, it affects physical sensitivity e.g. hard slick mousemat reacts much more quickly than a soft cloth mat.

only info we can kinda agree on is that if you have a sens of 20-40cm/360 with no or low accel, a fov between 90-110 and one of the few mice that all agree on beeing "ok" - then you prolly dont have to worry about your settings beeing too awkyard

True but the most irritating thing that is left out when people list their settings is FOV... Sens 4 Accel 0.1 yaw/pitch 0.018 doesn't mean much if you don't know if that is at fov 110 or 90. And personally I find soft hard mouse surface quite interesting info, but that's just me. At least if I have all the info listed in the previous post, I can quickly try out someone's settings and see what it's like.

The mouse you use won't improve your skill... all of the gaming mice they are all roughly the same.
