It is never to late if you enjoy playing it, and there are opponents to play against.
Besides if something new was to take over for quake as the most competetive fps duel game(which is doubt).
Then you could use your duel experience in the next game.

quake is the basic of any competitive title. experiance you get here is usefull in any game.

If you're going to play solely for practising for a year and reaching top you won't enjoy the game at all. Which is in fact time wasted.

You will neither get famous playing quake nor make a lot of money (if at all). On the other hand this might be your only chance to play a hardcore arena fps with a decent competitive scene before the whole genre fades away. So unless you expect to challenge the top 10 duel players, it is worth it.

never too late m8.. quake is like chess there will be people playing it 50 years from now still, no worries. Tho as the years pass by it does seem tougher and tougher to be assimilated properly, least on the NA side, due to lack of suitable practice & events!

I started in 2008 and I feel a bit fortunate not to of started in 2010 or 2011 since by that time all the oldschool q3 teams had left after a brief period of activity brought on by curiosity more than anything else, so the leagues all dried up... it was a easier to find lower level prac partners to work your way up, but that is not impossible in 2013 either, you just need to look a bit harder now D:

If uve played any other FPS games for a long time it wont take you that long to become competitive. But as other have said..there arent any big fast paced FPS around (on PC..) so if you wanna have some fun you should give quake a go i guess! :)

I'm not a good dueller by any means, so take this post with a grain of salt.

I doubt you'd be able to become 'competitive' at duel within a year. Like, take timing. You don't just need to be able to time items, you also need to make the right decisions concerning items. Then you need to position yourself correctly with that decision in mind. And then you start playing people who counter your decision and then you need to know the counter to their counter.

There are so many skills and so much knowledge that has to be second nature before you can be 'competitive.' So yea, don't be disappointed if you're not like +2000 elo this time next year

I think you overestimate the skill of people with 2000 ELO and underestimate how quickly someone can improve with proper practice and dedication.

I mean hell, there are people at the highest of levels that don't even watch their demos that can beat the world's best, and you can get to like 1600 ELO with some common sense and half-decent aim without even timing.

Obviously if he's just going to play 2 hours a day and not actively try to improve he isn't going to get anywhere fast, but if he actually tries 2000+ elo in a year is far from impossible. Hell, DDK got high masters in SC2 in 2 months which is a far greater feat than getting 2000 ELO in quake is in my opinion.

There won't be any new duel game anytime soon, so if you want to play then there is absolutely no choice.

Actually it's even not worth considering new games by the standards of competitive player, you might not know, but console industry is CRUSHING PC market even when it comes to FPS. So why would anyone bother with it? At best you'll get a port.

Tbh, I barely play and I can win matches in the FACEIT Level 4 cups and have close matches in Level 6.

There is a cs player in SA that only started like a year ago, and he has gotten pretty good, where he beats veterans like me, and gets frags playing against the top players here. However, it does look like he was very dedicated, he has played 1000 more duels than me in total, and I've been on QL since 2009.

If you have motivation.
If you enjoy the game.
If you have a lot of free time.
If you are ready to get crushed and pissed all over.
If you accept losses as a learning process.

Well I achieved a level where I could call myself mediocre (1600-1700 elo) within a year of active playing. What I did: I tried only to improve my timing and positioning and I really didn't think about my aim. Reaching this level in a year isn't too hard of a task.
