Adapter from dp to VGA should, to my knowledge, limit the data transfer (only 16 pins) rendering 120hz impossible @1080

Disregard that, that doesn't apply for CRTs - iiyama should run 160hz@1024x768 with VGA because it's analogue signal and bandwidth shouldn't be a problem. - not sure what comes out of it when the adapter comes into play.

Honestly the internet seems to be split about it - from what I've gathered I can assume 1.1a will work @ 120hz below 1600 resolution, I think you should give it a try, if not check the links I posted, this was quite informative for me :)

it's all about bandwidth, 1920x1080@120hz requires ~7.5 Gbit/s while 800x600@120hz needs less than 1.8 Gbit/s

It almost sounds like hdmi could push 120hz@800x600... am I wrong?

I currently run my LG W2363D on 1920x1080@110hz via HDMI from my laptop. Had to use EVGA Pixel clock tool to make it work though.

if there's DVI it's most likely dual-link, moreover due to bandwidth required a single-link one is enough for 800x600@120hz CRT
as for dp, passive dp->vga or dp->dvi with a dvi->vga adapter should work

Thanks for all of your reactions so far. It's really surprising to me that single link dvi supports 120hz at 800x600. I have been googling for a while and so far every comment I have read indicate that 120hz is only supported by dual link when it comes to dvi. Nonetheless it's worthwhile to give it a try.

I am quite surprised that there isn't anyone else who is in the same situation as I am as I know that there are many people who are still using their old CRTs.
