Chosing saturday was questionable enough as it's probably the worst day they could have ever picked (and we would have been forced to use a sub if it had started at 16 because of that day), making it happen at 11h is just retarded.

Perhaps faceit should have considered making it happen on a sunday instead of the almighty, sacred and untouched duel mode we already have too much of every day of the week.

I feel bad for dlcompare as it appears to be a complete waste of money due to the poorly chosen day and time.

We actually asked some of your team mates if they preferred groupstage, which would take more time, or a single elimination bracket like every Saturday.

They were fine with both, thus we chose the same format as we do with our duel finals, as we want to give as much attention to you TDM as we do to duel.

Update: We have changed the starting time and format due to players complaining. Sorry for not being able to bring you a full day of action due to this!

In reality:

- two teams actually couldn't play in the morning (players working on Saturdays), others just don't like early play,

- there was enough teams ready to play at 11:00 (us included) if only admins wanted to shuffle the groups a bit, but this wasn't considered,

- teams really wanted to play group stages and proposed playing both groups at the same time (starting at 15:00 like original schedule for group B), apparently the problem was too many games at once (up to 4, wow! Guess how many games at once will be played in 8-team playoffs' first round),

- since that wasn't possible, teams wanted a DE bracket and we thought even bo1 LB would be nice to have and shouldn't prolong the tournament by more than an hour,

- all that was rejected and looks like we'll play bo3 SE with bo5 final.


For a second-to-last team this sucks because in a seeded tournament, we'll get seeded against favorites for the final and leave the tournament after quick mercylimits. We could get more games in groups or better games in DE.

But it just looked like admins were tired with players' demands. And yeah, they actually liked the idea of 5 hour cast compared to 10 hours of original schedule.


Oh and to put a nice ending to a rant! Teams were told to sign up on the cup page, but first you need to have a team...

I think changing groups would work if only it was announced few days earlier. I guess Faceit wasn't prepared for issues when they were announcing the groups late Thursday.

Legitimate complaints have to be heard in order for the whole thing to get better.
Don't get me wrong, I'm appreciative to the fact they are holding team based cups, just disappointed they seem to be holding those cups only because a sponsor gave money for it and have even gone against the opinions they gathered and made it happen on the worst day.

If you can't see that's a bad thing to hold those cups on any day but the one you will get the most signups in a small and elitist scene, then you can't be helped.

Ok here is my constructive critique:

I see that a saturday might not be the best day in the week.
But here are 2 thoughts.

1st: duel ist just bigger and better suited for a broad spectator field which results in more vies. I for myself enjoy watching and sometimes (if I have the time) play tdm. But duel ist just easier to comprehend and follow. So thats a good reason why duel should be played on the "better" day than tdm. My guess ist that you would complain even tdm was played on sunday BEFORE duel (so 10am - 2pm or something).

2nd: I always complain about the professionalism of the quake players. On LAN they come too late and expect mercy by the admins. Games get delayed because some pro has some "unsolvable" issues and its so freacking difficult to get a team together. I played sports for the most part of my life and I played team based sports but also sports for myself. And the level of professionalism in all the sports I have played outreaches the "quake level" by like 10 times, even though I never earned anything from doing that. In the 3rd league (or even lower) in football the games are played on the correct time. They can be hold on thursday - sunday and nobody complains. (sometimes even during the weak) And if there are amateur teams, sometimes somebody has to work. And then they have to play with a "merk" or just don't have the best team possible. Thats unfortunatelly just the way it works in amateur sports and people usually just deal with it. But somehow some quake players think they have to be treated like freacking ronaldinho and get every single possible favorism by the admins etc.
To me thats an uneven relationship. Quake is small. Quake is amateur based (even though we talk about pros). And quake is far, far, far, far from professional when it comes to the behavior of its top players.

If thats not a constructive criticism, please just be quiet.

1. Duel may seem bigger because it has always been the mode pushed in tournaments coz it's simply easier to organize logistically (and also requires less prizes).
I agree duel is easier to follow than TDM or CTF in which you can miss many important actions simply because there is much going on but does that simple fact should make duel to be forever the mode pushed in competitions? Does it have to be prioritized over other modes ALL THE TIME? Would it hurt the duel scene as a whole to have a TDM cup on a sunday for once instead?
Also and more importantly, will duel be the savior (to justify its over the top current prioriziting) for the quake scene in the long run? I don't believe that at all.
To be honest I don't think anything can revive the quake scene to its glory days and take it for what's it's worth but back in the q3 days, community was driven by team modes and I don't believe that trend has really changed, most people will always prefer playing with mates/friends simply because it's more fun.
So why is duel pushed so much in comparison to team based modes?

You make it sound like I would have complained regardless of the chosen day which isn't true. I'm complaining when there are legitimate concerns to complain about. But yes, I would have complained about a 10am start because I don't think that's an optimal time to start a team based mode cup.
I didn't even necessarily want it to happen sunday, when I got asked I even mentioned different days of the week (evenings) which I think would have been better than saturdays.

2. I don't want to comment much on the players professionalism (and we don't seem to have the same definition of it anywya) but I will say this: You greatly overrate its impact in my opinion. A game will do great in esports regardless of the professionalism or in some cases amateurism of the community simply because it's played by millions. I'm not saying it's ok for players to disrespect the schedule and be late, it obviously isn't and I like to think I'm the kind of players that is very punctual. I'm just saying a whine there and there isn't making much of a difference.

no one would watch during the week cause of 125fps coverage (which whether you like duel or not is essentially good for the scene). sundays are weekly cups day since forever and it would be impossibly hard to change that status quo. saturday is the team modes' best bet. it's not perfect, but it's the best you (we) have got. and sometimes you have to take some shit to get ahead in the long run. we won't bring back glory days but we can always strive for better. and cups like this are the way to go.

It became an habit.. just like it became an habit for quakers to not play on saturdays. My point was that it wouldn't have hurt to have TDM instead for that cup and then back to duel the weeks after.

the way I see it now is as follows: we have about 2k people willing to watch quake regularly during the week (it's obviously a guesstimate, but I think I'm in position to make that guess). no matter the promotion or anything these people are there. scattered on various streams obviously. now most of these people want to watch duel more and are less interested in tdm which is a shame but that's what we have now. here's the problem: it's difficult to convince no tdmers to watch a whole tdm tourney let's say after the 125fps stream (which often lasts more than 3 hours anyway) full of exhausting goodness. I mean I'd watch it but I'm a fucking freak. and the week's schedule is so full of duel events it leaves practically the most hardcore audience and those who specifically want to see tdm (not many) to potentially watch the event. saturday on the other hand has no competing events whatsoever. I understand that's not without a reason, but viewer count wise it's the best way to go. and viewer count for this kind of event is everything. and as much as I love tdm I don't think it's good for anyone to permanently swap the sunday duel cup with tdm. once in a while yes, by all means, but not permanently. we as a scene can't afford than now when the things are starting to look better and better. not yet at least.

That must be why the only 1v1 esport is SC2 and all other esport games (currently mostly MOBA) are team-based? Even if you look only at FPS scene, for years Quake was the only game where dueling was big. All the ETs, CSs, CoDs, BFs etc. up to SM are played in teams.

Of course, QL's spectator support for TDM is seriously lacking compared to CS:GO and games like that. I've contributed my share to this thread, but people seem not interested or plain clueless (check the ammount of people mentioning "clutter" even after being reminded CS:GO still has more information on its spechud).


Good points about players. It's always a mess, whether it's online or on LAN.

And today we're playing for money, so if you have such a strong team as Unknown with huge chance of winning actual money, I'd take a vacation for one day, or tell my boss I need to leave early today.


But if you look from the other side, admins also have some room for changes in schedule/groups and it shouldn't be a problem either.

The groups were announced really late (Thursday evening), so there was almost no time to schedule a vacation. And just yesterday, the schedule was changed again, without even announcing it officially, so spectators like yourself don't even know when to turn the stream on.

So even though there definitely is a general problem with the players' attitude towards cup rules and schedules, I think you will agree that this time the organization could be better.

I agree on the "it should have been organized better". About the teambased stuff:

If you die in cs (cz, go or whatever), you are dead until the next round starts. So even without a map overlay its farely easy to follow (more or less) what is going on. The gameplay is in general also slower.

ET has not round based, but the attacks come in waves. I watched some cup latley with warwitch and the coverage was much better since its objective based. PLUS the spectators actually change the POV sometimes. I hate the somehow established rule in Quake that you only followkiller and followpowerup. Thats just stupid.

I can't follow MOBA since I never played any of these games, so i can't comment on them. Same is for CoD and BF. And shootmania is bad to watch no matter its mode. So the only comparisons I can make are QL:TDM - CS -ET. And of all those quake is by far the most spectator unfriendly even though I probably understand the most (compared of the other games) by playing it myself.

I casted some TDM games like 2-3 years ago from dreamhack with mops. And from those games it was even very difficult to build some tention. When you are back 10-0 in duel on dm13, players usually go spec and call the game. That never happens in TDM allthough the games might be decided after 10 minutes or so. A mercy limit might help a bit. But nonetheless there are, compared to duel, very few comebacks and the games seem to be decided much earlier IN GENERAL (not always!!!!!!).

Another reason are the casters. I VERY MUCH enjoy watching vor and dis in TDM. But besides that I have not seen many good casters. Maybe ddk. But in duel I can at least arrange with most casters and somehow accept them.

Some of these are just personl oppinions and not up to debate. But there are some strong arguments against tdm as a spectator friendly game mode. And again, I enjoy playing tdm and I'm looking forward to todays games. But nonenthelss duel seems much more suited for a broad spectator base.

If you checked the thread I linked, there are two proposed features to remedy that:

- automatic switch to stacked players (= expected to do important stuff or just go on a rampage)

- possibility to switch to predefined cameras (PU rooms on all maps and important areas which are cessed)

We were denied team forfeit functionality, but there's mercylimit. Nowadays most teams play with 50-60 even if cup rules say 80 (hi doz3r), so it's not as bad as it used to be.

There also used to be /setmatchtime 1199 command for referees (if losing team asked for it, it was the way to forfeit at any time). For whatever reason id removed it, but left mid-game /kickban and /put s in place.

35 frag comeback is the highest I remember being streamed in QL, ever, so mercylimit 50 is equivalent of 20 frag difference in duel.

20 frags comebacks happen all the time, you just don't view them as comebacks, I guess?

And even when the difference is 30 frags at 17 minutes and you know it's garbage time, it's still much more interesting to watch than a duel after it's 15:0.

Because in TDM if there's no mercylimit by then, the game is fairly close and interesting things are still happening. In contrast, when the duel winner is decided, both players stop playing proper and just fool around.

There are a lot of TDM games I enjoyed watching. But most of them are just too one sided. Maybe its not because of TDM itself but because of the bigger skill gap. I don't enjoy watching cypher pwning some 1200 elo player in the first round of faceit eighter :D

All the others are playing themselves (h8m3, tony, Lam), some of them are even trying to lead a constructive discussion (Lam), and the rest of the people posting obviously just want to see a great show and don't feel like they have to get involved with organizational decisions.

Also note that, even though both your post complaining about the schedule and the posts complaining about your complaint (brandan, h8m3, kk-super, ...) were plussed a bit, the post with the most plusses states: "needs more dis & vor ! ". As I said above, most of the community clearly just wants to see a great tournament.

Of course, you have all the right to complain if the schedule causes problems. However, complaining in a more constructive way may have prevented the admins from just going for the easiest fix and making it a single-elimination tournament -- which makes both the players and the spectators lose out on many great matches.

But: Did anyone of the complaining participants (winz, funnyb) suggest this in time? No. That's my point.

If the players are like "oh great admins, you fucked it up, everything is wasted" and "yeah, agreed", then it's easy to see how the admin might react thinking "Ok whatever, let's just make it a quick single-elimination bracket" instead of thinking about other possible solutions.

I'm actually disappointed by their choices because I personally know dlcompare and the course of actions faceit decided to take is far from the optimal one which caused the cups to have overall very few signups and most of the teams being mixes. Faceit could have posted a starting time for the "Finals Day" at the start of whole cup so people could've prepared for it by taking a day of work, you can't really do that 2 days before you know it.

Now you can say the players should be ready to play and what not, but we're not talking about a pro-scene where this is people's job, the players who entered want to play the finals and tried to change the schedule or starting time to make that happen, is that a bad thing?

This is a great learning experience for Faceit, TDM and CTF ask for a different approach since you're dealing with teams, having 8 teams means 32 players have to show up, instead of 8 for duel, and they aren't as easy to replace as duellers are either.

Let's hope for some great games even though there might be a few less, as always it should be quality of quantity and if its anything like K1llsen vs Evil then we should be good.

I just found out that we were even discussing another start time. I have not been online much last couple of days.. If you make these changes, perhaps get a reply from all the teams? :)

All seems to be good though, just a bit surprised the start time was changed even 1x time without getting approval from all teams. This is not whine, just observation and perhaps this can be done smoother next time.

We would of been just two of our team if we started it earlier and probably wouldn't have been able to play at all cause of that.
Now we got to play some games cause they changed the starting time, even if it was with a sub.
That would of been more sad to not participate on the finals at all after playing the last 3 qualifiers (thought most of those were with a sub aswell as frs mentioned).


Hopefully next time there will be more suitable days and we get plenty more teams to participate.

Afaik we weren't the only team out of the 8 that wouldn't been able to play that early at all.
I personally think it is better for the tournament/organizers that all the teams qualified plays, rather than only seeing 6 teams on DE groups.

Why so much hate for saturday tourney? Is there some sort of soccer tourney everyone in EU must watch this day (like Hockey Night in Canada!)?? Thats what PVRs are for nubs! I just don't get it, so ungrateful also..

well we kinda raged a lot in purgatory midgame which cost us the map so when it finished everyone was raged and tony came TS to cheer us up and suddenly everyone thought that playing with 3 guys from 102 is better than 2 eventhough tony wasn't really warmed up ;D so it's kinda rage decision i guess(though I can't rly say that I would have played better)

no,i sucked,no excuse,fuckin 60 ping,fuckin 70 fps till i timed out for close some software,just came back home after a family party,no warm up,stole the spot to h8m3 for playing totally bullshit,fuck.

i hope faceit runs a proper tdm _league_ with a set day & show in the future. this could have been so much better but still good effort, thanks

well not necessarily, ddk lives in milan now i think and he can cast the weekly tdm gameday show. if they insist on having a co-commentator, he could be on skype.

but a proper, semi-long league with a set gameday and strict rules about showing up etc to ensure atleast 2 streamed games every show is what's needed for the scene right now, imo

ok, enforcing of those rules then. allowing teams to be 3 + 1 merc (who doesnt play for a different team in the league) would also ensure games to be played on time, this is what they use in dota2. it is so important to get games played on time & them being streamed that its basicly the only thing that matters right now. if you dont get that right then the rest doesnt matter

also i think faceit has built enough prestige for themselves that playing in the faceit league and being streamed by them would be far more important than just playing for hoq where its jsut b lahbalhbabhalabhalbhdlbfgfdefdgf

I'm fine with their duel way - 1 day cups and grand final in the end(basically what this TDM cup was), league is more interesting for players, but will be a pain in the ass to organize and cast for faceit. Could switch it on the work day due to so many whiners, but the format is fine

a set of cups is fine aswell, but they need to do something about the mix teams and laughable mercing that basicly made this series a joke. ie. you're not allowed to play for more than 1 tag/team per season and not allowing more than 1 guy who isnt in the original roster to be added per week, or something similar

set of cups is way better. easier to follow for newbies and more condensed audience for the sponsors and stream. one step at a time.

Some observations:

For me as a spectator, saturday was the worst day possible, even though i would like to watch TDM, and I like it better than duel

Anyway, from the games I saw of the final match, it was close and exciting

seems like after starosta's departure to army 102 has problems with a stable team lineup.

Thanks to Faceit for organizing this, but from a business perspective I wonder how much longer they can run it :)

when you set out to plan your tournaments, i dont think the starting point should be that the most active teams and players "can just skip it"

maybe don't name the VOD with the team that won in the title for people who watch, like myself, aftrerwards :)
