Not sure, I'd say about ~2 years ago when QLRanks was made.
I was never in favour of the opinion that stats are a double-edged sword, I always thought having some sort of ranking is way more beneficial and just a few sore losers can't deal with it.
Recent months have proven that the game outside of tournaments is just an elo hogging parade with people threatening to SUE QLRanks and id software and everyone seems to be more and more concerned about their rank.
Maybe I was oblivious few years ago but I honestly think there was much less drama regarding elo and stats.
It was more the shift of power on ESR from the Americas-centered pub CA retard (post-raythenoob demise and after CooloutAC stopped posting frequently when he was put on probation and we didn't approve all of his posts, choosing to either delay or downright delete the batshit insane and illogical walls of text), but the demand for retardation left a power vaccuum causing the angsty Euro schoolkid to step up and eventually prevail.
Hence, more Euro-centric retard threads being made, once the tsunami that brought all of the official QL forum rejects and perpetually-banned onto ESR collapsed on itself, with the lawsuit thread a prime example: you encountered at least three people in their mid-teens (from France, Germany and Poland iirc) with no clear grasp of "due process" or "commercial law" intellectually debating with you by calling you names related to ponies (I guess they haven't learned "satire" in school either).
Because he doesn't mention the possibility of lawsuit in the title (which is additionally mis-spelt, and not due to the character limitations of thread titles either) and it looks like another shitty whine thread that possibly may have been hijacked by Jamerio due to 222 replies for a thread with a non-issue?
I dont think thats a valid argument. Surely one mistake decides games in high level chess, between equal players.
You do have a point though.
The argument for ELO not mattering should be the amount of luck thats affecting the games outcomes.
My opinion is that QL doesnt have high enough luck factor that ELO system is not viable, but its purely subjective.
I wouldnt use ELO to determine the best player or anything, theres too much luck and other factors for that.
Well, Blitz Chess is most similar because of its pace. Blitz Chess ELO doesn't necessary reflect vanilla Chess ELO. One mouse click might be an exaggeration, but it's certainly not too far fetched. A direct rocket, grenade or rail could change everything in a match. It might lead to a 10 frag spree, for example. Ultimately Chess isn't analogous with Quake because there are turns. Quake would be really silly if you could only fire in a certain order.
I think ql-rankings led to a more hostile dueling environment, because people think, that they are entitled to win over an opponent with lower elo, which leads to more flame and whine. Many people also don't understand, that elo varies greatly (probably around 200 points) and therefore should be considered a highly relative measure of skill, as what many don't seem to see it - they don't see it as a measure of outcome expectancy, which it is, but rather as the future outcome of a match itself.
and when they are losing to a lower elo player they feel they are underperforming and they get even more frustrated which leads to rage, anger and so on =)
Exactly and I actually wouldn't exclude myself from this, because it's my very own experience with my own feelings during games, but it gets better fortunately.
im not exlucing myself too
i was angry once when i lost to u cuz u only had 1500 elo and i had 1700 =)
quake skill cant be measured by any stat
there are too many variables which change outcomes and we are all human so its natural to try to comfort our ego by using imaginary stuff
but what i did was lose a lot of elo on purpose so i stopped caring about it helped me a lot =)
i agree with you and like you said i just want to highlight that people are to blame if they fail to understand how to read rankings, not qlranks itself.
Under certain conditions and analyzing Elo score in a statistical view, i think it can measure skill in quake (i'm talking about duel, don't know how team Elo works).
i dunno, I was playing some clan arena the other day on another account ive had for the past 3/4 years and some guy put up an elo filter thing and started bitching at me cos my elo was only 1000~ and i had to leave etc ><
i just thought "clan arena... with elo..." this is the game type i play while dinner is in the oven or something or before i head out. to me, since q3, this was always just the fun gametype where messing around was the given.
I remember the old q3 servers which were just dm6 nonstop and everyone just seemed so happy flying around killing each other. barely any chat or flames, just ya know - fun.
now though - "WAAAAAAAA BALANCE TEAMS WAAAA MY STATS WAAAAA ELO WAAAAAAA" and im just sitting there thinking "these people honestly give a fuck about their standing in quakelive public clanarena"
my theory is the new kidz are f'n pussies and stats and elo have a very very very negative effect on young male gamers. in every game ive played with elo i have found the communities to be absolutely toxic and i just feel embarrassed that im playing the same game as them :s
would love the option to turn off stats for myself (i dont see my stats and other peoples stats, other ppl can ofc view my stats).
a simple script would do that job, too bad i have no idea about programming/scripting
The shitty attitudes started around 2006 with the Walter generation.
This is when the attitude that duel is the only gametype and quakers stopped helping/teaching other quakers.... Although it wasn't so bad in Q4. Streetrunner and a few others were always nice and willing to help.
