I actually believe the site is at the final stage of decline and this thread is nothing more than an attempt at passing the buck when the real problem of inapproatite posts stems from admins like you who have failed to provide a suffient user expereince thus turning the readers into trolls and generating the behavior you are now trying to monitor.

As for my own moderation, I've generally been more strict on major news items and generally less strict on private journals. Though "more strict" doesn't mean much as I've been very loose regardless.

back on topic, im not sure nuking is really the best way to go about getting the site back to a place where the majority of the content is interesting/topical. to me personally its perfectly fine to let the trolls have their own topics in which they happily argue away at totally irrelevant semantic bull shit. as long as they're not on the front page and do not push the genuine articles to the back.

so perhaps we should look at how things get promoted to the front page etc and see if we can devise a mechanism to push the troll topics to the back.

ps: there's very little you can do however if the average user actually WANTS to read the troll posts. i know they're strangely fascinating but it seems like people here don't get bored of it even after they've seen it for years. if that's actually the case then no amount of censoring is going to fix anything.

it partly is, and perhaps trolls should be left alone to fight it out all they want, but the problem is to 'protect' normal users. I have had friends are smart and perfectly capable of defending themselves in an argument, use this site for a few weeks and just stop telling what a troll-fest it is. these are the good natured users who have in the past contributed to the site, and they need some form of protection. now, I can be biased and pick the users I want to protect, or be more blanket about it, in either case, there is no win-win for all sides.

Really can't see what esr will offer if content is going to be heavily moderated. The most entertaining part to this site is the arguments, trolling and general chaotic threads. Take that away, and esr offers nothing unique.

A "STFU-or-GTFO" is seriously not the way to go, especially for a site as set in its ways as esr.

Seems like everything is terribly intertwined in this. While the new breed of sub-par trolls from QL.com and other sites in the past couple of years has certainly made ESR a less appealing place to visit, I'm scared for the destruction of the sanctuary that this website has become for some of the internet's most interesting heroes.
I guess this is inevitable, for else everything could just be going plain downhill. But from the self-proclaimed "best thing about this website", to it's deep analyses, to hours of meaningless discussions, to incredibly biased, silly and usually at least mildly insulting memes, many a esreality user have experienced some of their best interweb experiences.
I'd hate to lose that, and would thus like to appeal to the sympathy of admins to ask for an asymmetry between the rules that concern new, 14 year old newcomers of intelligibly low intellect and ones that concern our proud clowns.

Even delusional bullshit, like the kind Jamerio tends to spew has the right to exist, obviously within boundaries, but I feel as this is such an overwhelmingly subjective matter it may very quickly descend to abuse of power (or not; again, it depends on how one perceives it).

I knew a site back then that went to the same way it was really effective. Let me tell you the story.
First they banned all the "trolls".
It was all nice for the first week because nobody opened a thread or generated a discussion other than tapping each others back and spit polishing the new smart and hard handed admins dick.
I dont know if they have ever realized but 80% of the content on the site was that either there was a "troll" topic that generated attention, or a "troll" reply that generated a lengthy discussion. Im using "troll" in the plebeian sense that everything that creates any controversy is trolling regardless of validity and anything is fine that doesn't regardless if it is without meaning or simply a stupid shit annd ultimately interests nobody.
The site admins and the site owner looked at the sky with teary eyes, winning the battle preparing for the explosion of popularity and the influx of new users.
The site went away some 6-8 months after that. Turns out ppl doesnt give a fuck, average nobodies dont generate content and attention, they are just there to complain if someone does.

I've recently joined a very heavily moderated classic pre-web-2.0 forum which is not only very temp-ban and permaban happy, but in fact charges you a modest fee to generate an account and post (yes you need to pay actual real life money to view (some of) the content and post in the threads), and it's one of the best sites I've ever been part of. A paywall is a really good filter.

Sorry I dont visit LGBTQ+ sites so I have no experience with that. 4chan also seems to be OK though

4chan has its own appeal, but gets tiring quickly tbh. Though I've spent quite some time there. Some of its boards are cool. Imageboards in general are cool, but they too get better with moderation. Some of the niche ones just ooze with original content and people who use the medium to talk about and process their innermost troubles, as in, actual NEETs openly talking about their failures, depression and how shitty they really feel most of the day.
