One of the first columns i read 2001 was called something like "is q3 dying" - xsr/esr doesnt really change that much.

xenon-hakeem-sujoy started the site in 2000(i believe)
bds, of sk-gaming fame, did the webdesign for xsr/esr
xsr was mainly focused on the american scene because that was where most of the lan action was at. once the cpl dropped quake3, the focus turned to the euro scene.

some other difference:
not many trolls existed in the early days.
people were too busy playing quake to care about creating an online personality. fanboys didn't exist either.

you got your demos from challenge-tv, cached.net, and cyberfight instead of here. took a while to get the ability to post your own demos and even longer before it became popular to do so.

columns, columns, columns
that's what xsr/esr did best back in the day and something i'd love to see return. of course, columns are easier to make when there are tournaments to talk about, so yeah, i'm not holding my breath over that one.

About the no trolls bit it was mostly the same in game. Atleast in q1 when online gaming was still quite new, most ppl where behaving, not much flaming not as much retards around as of now. Good times.

funnily i was registered on xsr1 and registered on xsr2 right after it was 'out', but i forgot my password after a few months, so had to register again. and now that i have database access, i can't find my first account!

xsr2 is a rewrite by sujoy after xsr1 was gone, with a new design and 'any number of games'.

Xou is kinda the new nicky, cept he's not as cool and does not have tits.

*woman, who was some sort of PR for our clan Levitation back in the day. Then slowly rolled into esr to remain in the scene a bit because she enjoyed it somewhat. When her kids grew up she had less time and slowly vanished.

I only hooked up just recently, because I noticed the extreme increase of intelligence from the users lately, by judging posts and replies.
