I'm sorry but I don't think keeping ins as a regular is a very good idea. I realize it probably saves you a fair bit of money but you really shouldn't compromise on what has made you what you are. from what I've seen the viewing numbers have also gone downhill lately and I'm afraid that's not only because of the summer.

Ins is okay, but I have to say that other casters can spice things up a lot and have the potential to make the viewing experience even better. Why not invite calipt for example? When he was co-commentating, this was a real blast.

see I don't dislike ins or anything, I'm sure he's a good guy. It's just that he's not good enough of a caster to justify having him there all the time. While the other guest commentators weren't always great either it was at least an incentive for me to tune in and kept things fresh. That aspect is particularly important with the abundance of online duel cups going on right now. also I think he goes a lot better with zoot than he does with ddk.

Sorry Sub_ but gotta agree with T1E here(#13): Co-casting is a chemistry issue, period. Zoot absolutely knows how to work with ins and gently steer him -- plus he knows ins' strengths(e.g., when Zoot asks him what the non-pov player is doing or about weap acc, etc.).
Zoot also uses an almost "big brother" kind of interpersonal style with ins that makes them unique to other casting teams that can seem kind of generically professional.
ddk doesn't seem to get ins at all or know what to do with him; not even sure if ddk knows just how much time ins has put in duels with amazing players(TONS w/ Strenx alone) and played just about every other ql mod to a proficient degree.

The question really is: Who else besides Zoot can bring out the synergies ins has for casting?

EDIT Sub_ : Sorry I reread your second comment and realize we basically agree that ins does MUCH better casting with Zoot than ddk. So I really wasn't at odds with your clarification. derp me.

Ins casting is good, he actually says relevant things about what is happening in game.

Ddk is good for 1 match, then he just repeats the same themes over and over and over and over and over....

Zoot is alright, I personally can't stand his no backbone personality. Though his play by play is fairly good and he understands how to work well with other peeps.

The thing i've gathered most from watching too much quake, is that you need to be a player, a good player at that, to even have the slightest chance at being a good caster. It's not like starcraft were you can just say the advantages of each players build and hype up a battle, because everything can change in the space of 2 seconds and you need to be able to keep up with the pace.

This takes immense knowledge....just because player a hits a good rocket and has more stack doesn't mean he's in an advantages position...has so much to do with were the players are, who can get to the next strong point first and the routes they take as well.

On the fourth and fifth paragraph, not really. Joe and wheat are among the best casters of all time and they have no clue about quake duel (at best 1200 elo).

In quake duel what is difficult is playing the color commentator role, but the play by play commentary doesn't require even knowing about the game because of its very nature, as most of what happens is what you see on the screen and all in a first person perspective.

What I'd like to see now is a solid main commentator, better than ddk, and that if there's three people at the studio then use the extra guest too, speaking once or twice a match. For example Tosspot (says what he sees on the screen and does the introductions most of the time), ddk (strategies, lets say 2 minutes out of 10) and cooller ("pffft").

Joe wasn't a good quake caster. He's a great caster period and he was with 2gd that's why he sounded and looked like a great quake caster, but he really had very few hints of what was going on. When he had to cast with someone else and take a more prominent role in the casting he just lacked the knowledge and lost confidence, even his tone of voice was different and sounded pretty much confused. When 2GD was into casting was just the whole package, funny, nice voice, smart, good knowledge of the language and fresh view on quake duels, bit egocentric and an asshole at times. You just needed to add a sidekick with great chemistry with him who knew his shit on a professional level to grant high standards most of the times, filling the voids every now and then and just bounce off and follow 2gd's lead. And that was just perfect for Joe to shine in the quake scene.

tl;dr he's a professional who had GREAT chemsitry with 2gd and James was indeed 2gd so it seemed like joe was a great quake caster. But he wasn't.

Pretty much agree. It seems so few people appreciate how good Joe and Wheat were with Quake, more than half the comments I ever read about them are along the lines of "didn't know much about the game". It never mattered, they made the game exciting and come across better than any other play-by-play commentators Quake has, it's only 1% of delusional elitists who would denegrate what they did. I can almost guarantee, that to any non-regular Quake viewer, they seemed great.

I actually don't think color commentry is difficult, I think being good (genuinely good) at play-by-play is harder, especially when combining it with hosting and carrying a show. Color commentry has only a few requirements, game knowlege (which hundreds have), intelligence and good English (or whatever the main language is going to be). The only hard aspect of good color is filtering through all your game knowlege and providing relevant, interesting comments into what's happening and why, in a time sensitive environment WITHOUT killing the atmosphere of the game by descending into some kind of lecture. This is hard in Quake due to there being few moments of downtime between action.

There are no good main commentators in quake unfortunately, plenty can do analysis, which just goes back to my "play-by-play is harder" comment. I agree you would need to drag someone like Tosspot back to fill that spot if you want to shift ddk into analysis, which I'd rather see as he's perfect for that role.

Also, why are the conversations between games seemingly so awkward at faceit? The only time from recent memory that it wasn't was when Liefje was there.

btw now I'm watching the finals and ddk is throwing one or two analytical comments per map, which are very, very good.

What made 2gd great were the insightful comments and the jokes, which is the color caster role, and I agree there aren't great main commentators in quake left. The best ones left to other games.

imho it sounds like ddk says always the same because:
A) He's always been on stage from the beginning.
B) They show mostly the man in control. Well, after a while there isn't that much to say i believe. After a guy got 3 frags, cycled the map and is again 200-200 vs a 100-75 you kinda run out of things to say and end up repeating urself.

I'd bind 9 cg_follokiller 1 and bind 0 cg_follokiller 0 and after the guy in control got a couple of frags, if nothing had changed stackwise i'd push 0 and show for some minutes how the guy out of control plays to get it back.
I get that they want to show the frags and the guy in control is likely to get them but it gets kinda repetitive imho.

I don't think B applied to 2gd though. He always had new things to say and new aspects of the game or meta-game to analyze or comment on when things on screen got repetitive. And sometimes he'd just talk about something else than the game itself if it was already in garbage time at the halfway point. DDK rarely does the "what player X should've done" type of analysis.

imo zoot is the best quake-caster in a long time. and thats coming from a guy who couldnt stand zoot in the beginning.

zoot can do play-by-play with eyes closed, and it would still turn out to be great. he perfected his style, his tone, his dynamic to just paraphrase the ongoing battles. very enjoyable to listen to.

zoot effotlessly keeps up with the pace of a game. so inbetween his play-by-play he does add some analysis. sometimes only scratching the surface, sometimes going deeper. but i never heard a caster whos so good at adapting to the dynamics of a duel.

what does that have to do with the fact that seeing mostly the same maps over and over and over and over and over and over and over again is boring?

on a regular map people play with a high degree of precision and thought. many players have almost fully fleshed out their play on such a map. in the end, its merely details that decide the fight.

very enjoyable to watch for people who notice all the small things.

on a new map however, people are just in the process of exploring the possibilities. im not saying that is not entertaining, but its far from the skill-level that regular maps can offer.

i dont find p0ni style boring per se but because it is so predicatable at times it takes the joy out of watching im play. but seeing him play vs player that are the sorta opposite of him is fine: like p0ni baksteen, p0ni ash, p0ni pavel. and so on.

well yeah. no doubt hes incredibly good at what he does (shaft/position), but i dont think this style really works well.

whenever ash got in control, poni was completely helpless and just relied on his aim. obviously it works out sometimes, but often it doesnt, even with his kind of aim.

i just dont see that special talent in him that made cypher/rapha/cooller champions in ql: the out-of-control play
