But you cant compare a quake player with a lol player. Nearly all quake players are extremely obsesive with their stuff and are asked by their relatives/friends when they buy gear. Thats when we recomend a asus/msi mobo, kingston/corsair memory, razer mouse etc.,,

he had no sponsors because he was/is an idiot. who would sponsor a guy saying i quit quakelive just because of nerves? Then he pretend he wants to find sponsor to QCon. How about he first grow up the hard way like everyone? He keeps saying QL community is shit etc.

He is also way too talkative when it's about talking of his skill, achievements etc AS OF LATE.

I think the main reason why Cypher didn't get sponsor is his inconsistency.

First he competes. Then he whines. Then doesn't train. Then evil outplays him. Then he retires from Quake. Then comes back. Whines.

If he would be consistent and just said: I want to play Quake, I will do my best to prepare and I need sponsors. There's a sum I need.

Then something would happen. Maybe sponsors would show up, maybe community would chip in.

beats me that a player that has won tens of thousands of dollars on quake and has a huge shot at winning back his investment would not go there because he doesnt get sponsored. I was already questionning myself in evil's case, where it was kinda obvious he'd endup atleast top4 (at the very worse lets be honest).

yeah but evil in the end only lended the money! (at least he said he would pay it back). that's the general idea, you don't need a sponsor, but you need the $2000 in the first place to get there and rent a room. not everybody can get a loan from the bank (especially in EU its very difficult compared to NA)

also in case you don't end up top4 (with is possible, like getting sick or something), you owe someone hell a lot of money. and fore some people owing $2000 equals being completely broke for quite some time.

I see what you mean but still beats me. I would certainly find my way to qcon were I in evil's shoes. Obviously winning a few faceits isnt sufficient money to travel there and I have a much thinner chance than him to endup in the top4 and get it all back

Exactly. It's not the money, it's an ego issue. If you don't feel like you're at your top game, why go to a tourney to finish third (even if you'd break even or make a small amount). I'd imagine its hard to not feel miserable on not winning for a person so used to it.

Not that it is only id's responsibility but it would be kind of nice if the defending champ shows up. Also I've heard 2 reasons why cypher didn't go one was sponsor the other was visa.
