I dont want a super loud pc but something nice that I can play Quake with, which still has the power to play new games on low settings (whcih I always do anway. plus, with the i5, i can still upgrade the gfx card in a two years or so, to get more out of the rig).

Your comment about the i5 made me think maybe this setup isn't as scalable as I would like it to be.
But I'm no expert in this so no idea if i3 is good enough in that field.

it really depends on what kind of games you'd wanna try

if it's just "I install this one, try it for an hour and never touch it again" there's no point, those specs are more than fine and you can pick something else than a z77 as you can't overclock that cpu. if you want something scalable and think you'll really play in the future with all those "next gen" games coming in a couple of months, you want something more powerful

i3 3220/650ti is a nice bundle, one component won't bottleneck the other, it's balanced

I prefer to buy the components at one vendor. Cant be arsed to shop all over the place. If I understood you correctly. I guess the biggest difference between my and your rig is that you use a better i5 (which I dont need - the difference between mine and the 4570 is not so big). On the other hand, your gfx is probably a lot faster but also louder - I would like to know how much louder and faster...

The performance difference between the cpus isnt huge but at least i wouldnt buy a tray version which very often is a retoured cpu. Middle way would be a Core i5 3470 boxed plus Asrock H77 MVP MoBo.
The HD 7850 is A LOT faster than the the crap GT640 :D

if its just for games and not bothered about storage i would ditch a normal hdd altogether and go with a 128gb (ish) ssd, not much price difference and don't need that much space surely, but the speed is so worth it.

Once you go SSD, you never go back.

Could anyone tell me where i could purchase a rig for a relatively low amount (In the region of 200-400) and it would be good enough to run current games on low-medium settings. I don't like spending a lot of money on upgrading pc stuff so any advice would be much appreciated.

$50-60 mobo is sufficient unless your overclocking. Screw the case; real men don't need one and look for the best GPU you can afford and pair it up with an ivy bridge or some shit.
