DVI and HDMI are completely interchangeable, only difference being HDMI carries video+audio and DVI is video only. When buying a monitor with a digital-in either one is fine; if you want sound jacks for headphones, choose a monitor with either HDMI or DVI+3.5mm.

I wasn't able to find your laptop. Whether it will support 120Hz will depend on what kind of video capabilities it has. Give us some info to work with.

Before the internet experts come crashing in with how MASSIVELY different DVI and HDMI are, I'll just mention that HDMI supports HDCP encryption and has a max pixel resolution of 1980x1200 while DVI does not support HDCP encryption, has a maximum resolution of 2560x1600 dependent on device and cable.

Neither of these two points should matter to you if your primary concern is to play Quake and not watch blurays or encoded on-demand video.

DVI is backwards and forwards compatible in that it can be easily converted back to VGA or forward to HDMI.

ignore this post, all of it. you need dvid-d or hdmi 1.4b for 120hz because of zee bandwith needs.

i missed that? i figured 'flat monitor with 120hz' refers to a lcd with 1080p. besides, iirc 640x480x120hz was the only resolutionxrefresh rate that did work when i tried this.

/edit: also as an heads up... there are laptops with hdmi 1.4 that do not support 1080px120hz :}

HDMI 1.4b was released on October 11, 2011. One of the new features is that it adds support to 1080p video at 120 Hz, allowing frame packing 3D format at 1080p60/Eye (120 Hz total).

That may very well be the case (640x480x120hz). Not going to argue here.

In his config, his res is 1024x768. Also, I was unable to find his particular laptop, so whether or not it has HDMI 1.4 is up in the air. I can't say 'Get that' if the case may that he will, it will not do what he wants, and he'll end up money-out-of-pocket. Nor can I really speculate that he's got a DVI-D dual conn.

except that instead of 750go hdd it has only 500Go, and the processor is a i5-3210m (2.5ghz) instead of the 3230m (2.6ghz) that you can see in the url above.

hdmi 1.4a aka you are out of luck (afaik).

it depends on the resolution you wanna play at and the hdmi version (1.4 should be ok, iirc).
edit: if you want to push res up to something like 1920x1080@120Hz you will need DVI dual link for sure.

HDMI and DVI are electrically compatible (meaning you can use a simple adapter) but HDMI generally has lower bandwidth specifications.

As a result, unless your laptop manufacturer wasn't cheap and used a new version of HDMI (1.4) you won't have the bandwidth available to do 1080p@120hz.

You may be able to do 120hz at lower resolutions however, assuming of course the monitor is capable.

I couldn't find out what graphics card was in it (ATI Radeon at least). Maybe you gave the wrong model number.
