I have an SSD, and buying it just only for quake is the stupiudest thing one could do. And its not that much of an improvement when it comes to QL loading. Just be happy with what you have.

not pro users have to wait anyway ...

most crt's supports 120hz (or more) in lower res. you would get 120hz on 800x600 or 640x480.

You have to look up the specs of your monitor and google something like "crt hz calculation". That should give you enough information to find a lower resolution you can run @120hz. For nvidia cards you can create custom resolutions in the nvidia control panel. For other cards just google again.

Why 5:4 aspect? Why not 1280x960 4:3

Well as you already mentioned.. SSD would help you speed up load time the most. But in your case (old system) you probably wouldn't reach the full speed potential.

But if you ever choose to upgrade... you might want to think about including SSD for windows and games partition. It's not just about speeding up load times in games. Windows will also load up faster. So in case you're playing team mods, you would actually be able to restart and get back ingame before the damn 60s timeout runs out.

Loading time is mostly CPU limited, even a ram disk doesn't make much difference. Timescale 10 in autoexec does make a difference. Possibly a defrag of your ql files might help as well slightly.

that's why it helps to speed up your system, on modern pc's there won't be big difference

Yap. thats how it works for QLRanks TV, when "Awaiting Gamestate..." have to go quick. For exaple when server is full.

Just as T1E told you, map loading depends purely on CPU speed, and may I add: single threaded speed. No amount of cores on your AMD can help here, bow before Intel overlords :)

SSD won't help a millisecond. I even ran from RAM disk for a short while (because of an unrelated filesystem issue) and there was no difference either. Same for defrag and stuff. Only the first run after system reboot will be affected by those things, afterwards you just load stuff from disk cache and get stuck on CPU-intensive decompression and reading the bsp.

other things to consider when using linux and a SSD are:

reduce the times the swap is used
/etc/sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness = 10

set up a ramdisk (with 2gb reserved in this case)
/etc/fstab: tmpfs /tmp tmpfs size=2048m 0 0

disable browser cache (eg. firefox)
about:config: browser.cache.disk.enable "false"

and i would kill "zeitgeist" and "tracker-miner" for various reasons :p
gnome-sessions-properties: tracker-miner-fs, tracker-storage & zeitgeist
dconf-editor: org.freedesktop.tracker.miner.files.crawling-interval -2

afaik the current way to disable mouseaccel in linux is this:
dconf-editor: org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.mouse: motion-acceleration 0.0 & motion-threshold -1

I put it into /etc/init.d, but rc.local might also work.

swappiness doesn't apply for me, since I have neither a swap partition nor zram.

mouseaccel: I disabled it via some other method in a startup script.


I might have one or two more nice tips for quake on linux...

1) Are you using an nvidia card? If yes, do you know about the 'max pre-rendered frames' setting?

2) Do you know about the renice command to boost quake live to high priority (makes it smoother, if it's not already smooth)?

Are you two guys on Linux since yesterday? That's some serious Gentoo-forum-level bullshit in the 3 posts above :)

But I will note that "max pre-rendered frames" setting is exclusive to DirectX and even on Windows where it exists, it has no effect on QL :)

pre-rendered frames is working on linux. I feel it. Others feel it. It is there, just not in the GUI interface of the proprietary driver. It as a great effect on the opengl based quake live game. Rocket / rail / plasma / (...) feel a lot better when it is set to 0 frames. No placebo, I play quake long enough to tell the difference.

Also, I'm on linux for not quite a year until now, but I've learned a lot already and am the author of a quite popular custom Android kernel with some own code in it as well. As I don't know how much zealot knows about the stuff I'm writing about, I thought it would be a nice move to help him (and probably other linux gamers) to improve his quake experience.

And you're telling me to gtfo?! Or did I misinterpret?

Also, pre-rendered frames works on windows with quake as well.

OK, call me a skeptic, but...

Even before OGL_MaxFramesAllowed existed, people were reporting they feel difference of the original "max prerendered frames" setting.

And they tested on rigs with a single GPU. (You don't play Quake on a Multi-GPU setup, or do you?)

And they felt input lag goes down after setting it to 0. (In case you don't know, 0 means "let application decide" and effectively means 3.)

The thread you link also includes a guy who sets to 0 and it makes Quake "run with much less input lag".

No placebo for sure...






I'm going home to test setting this to 0 and 100, let's see...
