Not sure if related, but in order for my (linux) color correction settings to kick in I have to open nvidia x server settings. I could probably make this load automatically but I'm to lazy and rather just click on it lol, So this sounds funny but try simply opening that before going into a game and see :o

yeah try open nvidia x server settings and uncheck sync to vblank and keep it open.

I had same problem on my laptop, but cant remember how i solved it.. it's still at work but i can try to look at it tomorrow.

Its strange that you can get 125 fps some times though.
Is it a stable 75 fps or is it flickering?

Do you get the same problem if you use Xfce as desktop environment for example instead of gnome 3?

Don't really know much about gnome 3, stopped using gnome when 3 came out.

Just tried what ChillOut suggested and it seems the same for me, after I open nvidia x server settings and join the game it is fine.

Try disabling desktop effects. Either click the gnome logo on the login screen and choose "gnome - no effects" or disable it in the control centre or whatever they call it nowadays. I had the same problem with compiz that would keep turning vsync on. You can also use the "compiz fusion icon" to quickly turn compiz on and off.

try editing ~/.nvidia-settings-rc

.nvidia-settings-rc is automatically generated/updated when you run the Nvidia control panel aka nvidia-settings.

But you need to add
nvidia-settings -l
invocation as an autostart service for your GNOME session if your distro doesn't do this automatically.

Seriously, i work with linux stuff and for servers it rocks, but for desktops i tried many times but man, its so frustrating to make things that are so easy in windows, whats the point in losing many hours, posting in forums, trying things to fix something that shouldnt be more difficult than some clicks?

na I agree with this, I think most linux users know the pros and cons for the most part. linux is nice cause you can trim the fat off if you know what your doing or feel experimental, but as a all purpose desktop it's just a headache.

Partly why I like it though, it acts as a roadblock and usually stops me from playing games all together. Cause for a game or something else specific I personally like creating another desktop that loads a low resource gui or none and exclude a bunch of stuff which is a time investment that I usually think rationally about -- someone should really streamline that process. (I use to boot in prompt and just run x window and firefox I think, cause I'm weird)

I also like it as a workspace, having different workspaces as different contexts which segregates alt tabbing, so I don't have this hugh ass list is nice. also <3 xfce-panel

I am playing QL on linux since a few years now. Not exclusively, in between i was playing on windows, too. Let me tell you one thing: Out-Of-The-Box experience on windows is way better than on linux for QL. So unless you don´t know how to setup QL on linux windows should be used for best results.

My setup is as follows:

1) Compiled own kernel
- Configured kernel for low latency (preemptive kernel)
- 1000 hz tickrate
- Disable dynamic ticks
- Apply BFS patches to kernel

2) Compiled network driver from vendor
This may not be necessary. I have a realtek network adapter and the in kernel driver feels like shit. I don´t know why but when i used the kernel driver from realtek it felt much better afterwards.

3) Mouse configuration
- I´ve set mousepoll to 1000hz
- Use dgamouse in qlconfig
- disable middle mouse emulation (can produce mouse input lag)

4) xserver
- Start seperate xserver instance for just QL.

I don´t know why you get only 75 FPS. It sounds like a vertical refresh issue. Try disabling vertical refresh in nvidia control panel and set r_displayrefresh in quake.
