it's actually an intresting mix of survival horror and tactical fps gameplay set in a 500km/2 map inhabited by zombies. built as a mod for the technically clunky but very indepth arma 2 engine. permadeath while all weapons and items gained are left on your body to be looted. no rules to the game other than the ones the players create themselves although this tends to lead to a kill on sight policy. reminds me of the stories of ultima online involving monster trains and teleporting new players into rooms with no doors or windows before it was patched up. so a slow and interesting experience that can shape to your own playstyle but as a previous poster said i'd wait for the standalone if you intend to try something like this.
Played it a good bit when it came out but just got so frustrated with all the hackers. Played alot of ARMA 2 ace mod in high school and never encountered a hacker once(although this is probably because of the demographic that was playing ace mod.) I think I remember reading that the issue was how much of the calculations were done client side, the server seems not to validate to much and just accepts pretty much any parameters being sent to it.
Someone told me there was a hacker that killed everyone on the server by lifting them all into the air and sending them plummeting to their deaths, and there was also a hacker who went around as a dog helping people ?

It stopped being fun after the first 10 encounters.
However it got interesting when some of the hackers spawned an actual arena - a thunderdome, if you will - in which _ALL_ the players were put, where they all fight to the death. The last man standing in the arena got a prize of sorts; a helicopter filled to the brim with all the supplies you need (as well as those you really want for troublesome times - i.e. heavy duty thermal scope sniper rifles and all that crap)
I died first, but everyone respawned back at the arena to spectate the activities from a corner. After the ordeal, the spectators were then killed again but this time they respawned at the original spots.
would have liked to play the standalone, A YEAR AGO! but rocket pushed and pushed for new implementations, but all we wanted was a mod standalone alpha and then he could have patched it. This way i think i lost interest, not in the concept of the game, that's awesome, but the way the developers handled the SA.
shitty engine, annoying developers ending up rewriting EVERYTHING to make a SA alpha that's not even out yet.
I watched a few episodes on youtube and it reminds me of SA:MP. Driving around, doing fuck all and pretending you are in some story line. 3 Months later you are bored to death and start questioning why you played it in the first place.
