ArchLinux 64-bit here, latest nvidia proprietary drivers, sound via OSS. Running QL in a seperate X11 server, was a bit tricky to get the 160hz refresh rate for my CRT but once i figured that out everything was perfect.
60 fps = everything feels like lagging behind. Get more fps / hz.

new nvidia drivers actually work with xrandr and now the default is vsync on, so i suggest you turn it off in nvidia-settings to get 125fps.

Just curious why OSS instead of ALSA?

cause oss has proper hardware mixing, among other things :> oss is just great, until you decide to plug in your usb headset... that's what made me go to alsa, since i cba to invest a lot of time in makin it work with oss.

I've never had a card that could actually do hardware mixing lol. Alsa's Dmix seemed to work fine but I've heard that there is more latency with it compared to oss.

Not much of an issue though for a workstation :p

I have hardware mixing in ALSA, works identical to OSS on the same hardware. Identical as in: OSS 15 years ago used to create /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. ALSA provides hw:0,0 and hw:0,1 for the two channels of the DAC (or maybe those are separate DACs, whatever).

I still need to route QL through PA because I have headset connected to a different sound card (that doesn't do hardware mixing).

plus pa has a system wide equalizer.

60 fps and 60 hz feels just right on Windows 7, it's a laptop btw, here it feels laggy as I said, I'm going to try the running ql on a separate X server though.

60hz simply can't feel right. Never, ever & forever.

i'm on 64bit archlinux, using pulseaudio+alsa and i have enormous sound problems at times (sound dying). they mostly occur when i'm on teamspeak3 :(

i've no idea if this is isolated issue or not, but every time sound dies i have to snd_restart and hope it doesn't die in the next minute or so. hadn't had the problem with OSS on.

also, nvidia drivers have been updated to apply vsync by default, so open nvidia-settings, go to "X Server XVideo Settings" and untick the "Sync to VBlank".

On my Fedora 14 (yes, the last one with GNOME 2, I'm aware it's EOL), I had sound not being there in some games and needing snd_restart.

Turned out I needed to downgrade alsa-plugins-pulseaudio from 1.0.24 to 1.0.22.

Probably this could be fixed by recompiling QL against newer alsa-lib headers or maybe it's some code bug. In any case, don't expect id touching Linux port ever again, we're lucky that it still works with some work-arounds :)

Couldn't you just use dmix instead of adding in pulseaudio? Every sound server i ever used just caused problems like latency or crashes.

I think its enabled by default on just basic alsa on archlinux.

Sometimes on pickups my modelsound is louder for a sec, alsa is on this laptop

I had some audio buffer issues on my system and I think I fixed that by tuning s_alsa_latency (currently I'm using 64 and it's fine).

Maybe you can send QL audio directly to your USB headset using plughw, you'd just had to find it's ID. If you don't have any other sound card besides the built-in, it should be "plughw:1.0". (Notation is "plughw:<soundcard>.<device>. <device> is usually 0 unless your sound card has multiple channels.) If you use s_alsa_pcm "default", you'll probably end up using pulseaudio and have loads of audio lag in game.

i had some sound failure with that setting, had to delete it, i asked in the chat from #ubuntu about getting a usb device for sound to plugin a 3.5mm jack for stereo headsets.

Which setting? If it's s_alsa_latency, try larger values. If it's s_alsa_pcm, try what byce suggested below to check for your soundcard #. (Unplugging and plugging it in a different USB port may make your PC give it a different ID, depending on your udev config.)

Also, if you change the USB ports polling rate, it might affect other USB devices.

Get alsa-utils and run:

$ aplay -l

Look for the card # for your USB headset. If it's card 1, set:

s_alsa_pcm "plughw:1,0"

iam not an admin on the machine

Try this then

dmesg | grep "#[0-9]:"

or find "ALSA device list" in dmesg output.

Using ubuntu here, just log off click on the ubuntu logo and click 2d so all the eyecandy turns off and you get a more stable fps.

60 fps? what pc do you have? maybe you should use a lightweight distro. Ubuntu is a beast. Try Lubuntu or something.

I agree linux sucks... there is no hardware support. The sound will be the biggest issue in linux you'll probably notice, as long as you at least manage to get proprietary video driver working.

Those linux communities don't even do much online so there is no security either. If you think security by obscurity is the way to go, then by all means.

Once you click wrong email or visit wrong url...your iptables is toast. Thats if you even know how to manually set up complicated rules.

I don't even think ubuntu comes with default iptables rules. Their forums also just got hacked offline for over a week last month which they want to blame on some 3rd party.

I know windows xp is just not even viable anymore and gets broken soon after install if you are targeted......so I would install apparmor and a diff firewall besides iptables at least for Lubuntu.

I don't really have a problem on Linux Mint, but I'm not as tweaky as most. Proprietary nVidia drivers are installed and I use PulseAudio. I'm using Mint that I've long time ago switched to Debian repos. The game does 125fps, but the laptop screen can only do 60Hz anyway.

Stable 125 fps on it, altho i moslty use my desktop to play ql with windows and a preferrable 120hz screen.

try to open up nvidia x server settings and uncheck "Sync to VBlank". And keep the program open in the background and it should give you more then 60 fps if your computer is powerful enough.

If you want a more lightweight desktop environment you should try xfce instead of unity.

just run this command in the terminal and then log out and log in but choose xfce as desktop environment instead of unity.

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

Another thing worth noting is that I used to have to set PowerMizer to max performance or I would get weird delay in QL and the fps would bounce between 121-127 instead of solid 125. This was on a 9600GT.

It didn't happen in any other game, probably something to do with id refusing to touch the engine and make it more modern. I don't think anyone uses Quake 3 to test video cards anymore guys, you can update QL now.
