Ubuntu 12.04 for building a small, dedicated and embeddable system? I may be wrong but I don't follow those rumours ^^

Well I have no idea if its true or not or to what level they would strip Ubuntu down (obviously a lot I'm thinking). Still I don't think SteamOS's target is really for embedded devices but more for HTPC/Gaming Machine usage. That remains to be seen depending on how/if their streaming system works.

Valve doesn't have a lot of staff so basing off Ubuntu doesn't seem too surprising. If they had a lot more people they might have based it off straight debian, gentoo or rolled their own LFS.

I reckon they already made the hardest part with Big Picture; you may be right, given they already worked with Ubuntu, but I'd not be surprised if they go with their own distro, ie using busybox.

Packages marked as stable in the repos are old as shit.

The "stable" branch is meant to be reliable, there is "testing" and "unstable" for up-to-date packages

Even those are quite dated compared to most distros.

Debian stable is great for machines that just need to work. If you want bleeding edge get Arch and pacman -Syu break your system every day.

Gentoo is a nice balance for me though.

Out of the box, Debian is one of the best distros for sure. But you have to live with >1 year old software.

You can get bleeding edge with Gentoo as well, and it probably won't break every day. Maybe just only once per week. ;)

Slackware was the bestest in its time. But that time has ended a while ago. :)

Naw I never have gentoo break. Even running hardened grsecurity pax & pae. If there's problems compiling packages it's usually pretty trivial to resolve. Stuff is actually tested here (usually :p)

I have bear paws, I keep breaking stuff. But yeah, the solution is usually among the top 3 google results.
