Dirt2 is about as sim as you get besides Richard Burns Racing in Rally games, and I agree rfactor > gt5, but gt5 is pretty fuckin close...

i dont know what mods of rfactor you played but gt5 isn't close to it : D

It depends on the approach really, what the player wants and has time for.

most rally mods in rfactor are arcadish, best are enduracers and blackpain, very well made

I was talking about as a whole game btw, because GT5's rally portion is a piece of crap (not a single real life track, the 'original' tracks are way too wide, faulty physics) and the only 'proper' rally game/sim I've tried is modded RBR

What I like the most of rfactor as a concept is summarized in this.

yeah the Rally in GT5 is pure garbage. I was not pleased. physics are booty.
