cypher did defeat both pavel and evil @ dhs. after that he got 3-0'd by rapha in the finals.

evil won the last DH, which was DH:W 2012. That was when evil made a name for himself: before that he wasn't the big online and LAN star he is right now, that schools cypher every time.

In previous QL appearances he wasn't playing at the same level and evil himself said he started to improve after losing in the previous LAN (was it DH or Adroits?), by studying his opponents and taking notes from old school matches. That's why DH:W 2012 is the milestone that marks two different players altogether, like rapha before and after the Athens championship.

After DH:W 2012 came a Russian lan, in which cooller beat pavel in semis then evil in finals, and then there was quakecon. These are all the duel lans that have happened after DH:W 2012 (quake is dead and all). So, after evil became noticeable there have only been two duel LANs: evil got second place in both, losing to cooller and to rapha, the only ones that have defeated him in a whole year and the only ones that have the 'key' to defeating evil.

In between there has been lots of online action, when cypher has retired like 5 times after being defeated by evil, and maybe he didn't attend quakecon because of that (no point in spending own money to attend if he's gonna get third place at best).

For both reasons I think cypher should be a bit more humble and take advice from cooller, as he is one of the two people in the world that can defeat evil and cypher simply can't do a thing against his opponent.

From what I'm reading here cypher thinks evil wins because of better execution. In order to gain something what's best is to think there has to be some depth in evil's thinking (not just 50% lg winning) and also note rapha has worse execution than those two and still manages to be the best, so better strategies can win against better execution. The idea is that the best damage dealer of the game (cypher) should get better in the strategies side, in which cooller and rapha excel. That or hit 70% lg (WMO). I know it sounds harsh but being humble is the best way to take advices and in the end to improve

Now, of course in the interview cooller could be talking crap on purpose -as I said I haven't watched it-, but he must know something cypher doesn't. It's not like cooller can defeat evil with lower accuracies than cypher because of luck, right.

I'd say going from finishing 4th to winning DH is a big difference. I don't care if he would've went 8 overtimes with cypher in the 5th map at Adroits; he still came in 4th.

It's pretty apparent DHW12 was a turning point for him. The point of all this, which you failed to grasp, is that since evil has made that turn, cypher can't really keep up anymore. The only ones that seem to be able to are cooller and rapha. So, I'm not really sure why you're bringing up the Adroits event. As if that alone somehow completely disproves the change in his performance during the time period of mid 2011 to DHW12 vs the time period from DHW12 up til now.

his sudden improved gameplay/skill level was just as apparent at adroits as it was at DH, for those that paid attention. come to think of it, only reason why evil didn't beat cypher at adroits was because the 5th map played was hektik, evil's worse map.

This whole key thing has being handled poorly by the pros. Rapha doesn't tell key to beating Cypher for Cooller in some interview out of respect. Rapha thanks Cypher in interview for giving tips to beat Evil. Cooller doesn't want to tell key to beating Evil out of respect but will tell him in private so Zoot can tell everyone? How does that make it any better? I don't really care that much about tips to beat other players (just a game after all) but lot's of contradicting statements by the pros.

If people want to share something that can potentially be useful in order to beat someone, they ofcourse can do that, or choose not to. If its something even a little bit useful, I dont personally understand why share. Still anyone can do as they wish. Its not a big deal.

The pros are likely trying to come up with ways to beat "x" player and probably all have their unique ideas how to go about doing that. Its not like cooller has some magic key here. He probably has some good insight though!

Take a break and don't be so mad. Cypher is arguably the greatest player in Quake history. He has superb movement and aim and hi style is original. Best player to spectate that is for sure. As far as Evil goes, his style matches up good against Cypher, and that is part of the reason why Evil online is getting the best of him. Lets not also forget that online lg is much stronger than on lan, while rocket is weaker. On lan Cypher overall still has more wins against Evil. Cypher loves the rocket play, and unfortunately on internet ping especially in close combat rockets are not the same as on lan. So in those close combat situations online Evil is able to dodge the rockets and land consistent damage with the lg. It is like the main point that's turning the game in his favor.

On lan its a different story, Evil will eat rockets in those situations and he will have to be more careful. I mean cmon even Strenx who is extremely linear in his play was able to beat everyone online because of his lg whoring and aim, on lan he never placed first or was close to being as dominant.

Rapha showed in Quakecon that evil on lan will get spanked if you play a good plus back game, he landed rockets on Evil left and right and Evil couldn't implement his game and he lost.

You can only abuse lg to the extent that evil does online, on lan his games even if he wins will be much closer.

Not to take anything away from Evil, as his execution is top notch, but lg is a big part of his style, so for becoming an online hero its the best recipe.

Cypher and Rapha have the best resumes in ql, as far as anyone is concerned they are the two best players. Evil has only won one lan,he needs to prove himself a couple times more before he can be called a superior player to someone like Cypher.

Of course, would he be a mere aimwhore, he would play apparently unstoppable rushing all the time, and then losing 20-2 when someone manages to exploit his weaknesses, because that is what aimwhores only do.
And regarding Avek, he's still unmatched in smartly overaggressive playstyle: he based his style way less on pure aim, he comfortably rushed and beated opponents using just the rl, and, so far, his resume is better than Evil's one.

T7 was a boxing match.

Rapha's gamestyle is calm and focused on what moves he will do in the next minute. He makes the moves first or traps, and then the enemy reacts.

When Rapha was playing evil, he was almost always reacting to EVIL, not playing his style, not controlling the map. He would double back, stand and wait, just looked really lost or paranoid when evil would show up. It was like he was playing resident evil not quake.
