Recently it's pretty obvious but it's taken Evil a loooong time to get to this level. Maybe QL just suited him more than Q3 or he's putting more time in, although Evil did start to be quite dominate towards the end of Q3 (in Russia at least)
Back in 2002-3 time Cooller was winning more, 2004 bit mixed but then 2005 saw Evil come through and win a few ASUS cups. Worth noting that Q4 was out then and Cooller was playing both, probably putting more time into Q4.

Overall... Cooller, he's been at the top for 12 years on an international level!!!

If you want people to take you seriously you might wanna stop mentioning the russian fun 60hz-lan with 10EUR first prize alongside Dreamhacks and Quakecons.

And more importantly, defeating the best player in the world on LAN on a tournament counts no matter the prize. For example the last TDM Prague Lan wasn't a major event yet it kinda counts like one because of the participants.

Obviously both aren't exactly Dreamhacks and don't count on the score for major events, but still matter. Of course I wouldn't even mention it if there were still lots of major events in quake, but in a whole year there has only been one (quakecon 2013).

Yes, you can totally expect players to be equally prepared, focussed and determined when playing for 10EUR at a local funlan or for 3000EUR and the world champion title.

I'm not saying cooller is better than evil right now. What I'm saying is cooller has stayed at the top for like 10 years, which is way more consistent than evil's career (10 years 1 win), to the point in his last LAN duel appearance he beat the best in the world in a grand final (everyone plays LAN finals seriously).

I didn't watch Prague TDM, only FFA and it didn't seem of the scale of what is called a major event, like Dreamhack and with better prizes than a nerf gun. Winning Prague TDM is not on the same level of winning quakecon TDM. International =/ major.

BTW if it wasn't for quakecon 2013 the same phrase "it was the biggest event in over a year" could be said about that Russian LAN.

That was a placement match only, not for the tournament. Might as well win a friendly and count it as a world championship.

Besides, what matters is not the map count of the whole tournament but winning the final. It happens all the time in group stages, which quakecon didn't have, with the champion losing in group stages to the player he defeats afterwards in playoffs or in the grand final (IEM finals 2010).

Since quakecon2013 final had a map advantage and it ended 2-2 we don't know who really won the final, when it matters. What's clear though is evil didn't win (a tie isn't a victory) and that he lost one match in that whole tournament, against rapha in winner bracket finals who he met once again the grand finals, which was a 2-2.

It could be said that rapha earned that map advantage so he deserves the 3-2 win, but that's not how double elem works (the advantage is a set or none at all) and is quite unfair. I'd say the same if rapha or cooller had lost.

In quakecon there were three rapha-evil matches:

- Placement = not tournament
- WB finals = tournament.
- Graind finals = tournament, the one that matters the most.

What do you mean by better? Is it who wins more? Over what period of time? There have always been top players (top 3) that have had an achilles heel in the form of a non-top 3 player...

better= beats other guy in a convincing fashion and/or most of the time
examples: cypher is better than cooller at ql duel.
rapha is better than cooller at ql duel
rapha is better than av3k at ql duel
evil is (probably, need some more lans to see, but so far, evil seems better consistently) better than cypher at ql duel
everyone is better than spart1e at ql duel

Better is the one that wins LANs. Did evil win the last one? No, so no certainty.

sure evil didnt do as well as many thought at quakecon. he did well, but not as well as expected (at least by me). expectations were high tho too

well if you really want to compare them, try to do it while they had both their peak time.

achievements don't really work to compare these 2 as cooller was playing on the highest level when ql was still pretty active and with 5 different favorites to win the tournament just out of europe (avek, cypher, cooller, strenx, stermy, spartie/k1llsen) even without any non european player attending. evil keeps getting top 3 now when the field of favorites is rather small and they are all pretty inactive.

so not sure how evil would perform like 3 years ago when ql had some kind of peak time but he would still been able to reach top5 in a tournament (also with americans atteding)

That's a myth. The players you mentioned (and rapha, dahang, z4 etc. too) play as much as they used to if not more. Only exceptions are strenx and stermy, but there are new players who stepped up and filled their spots such as pavel and p0ni.

avek, spartie, k1llsen don't participate as often as they used to 2 years ago on tournaments.

and if we take pavel and p0ni we are at the start of this whole thread again: are they as good as / better / worse than stermy, strenx etc. :)

k1llsen plays every 125fps league, spart1e is playing every faceit cup for a few month.
Avek doesn't play much in tournaments but he's still really active, and he got raped by evil in the oldschool cup a few days ago, so...
