Bad example of what? I was specifically looking for what other people think about regarding this. Also, Apartheid ended in 1990, arguably 23 years isn't such a short period of time.

This is a short period of time. People who rule your country, who set these quotas and pick players for your teams - they all remember apartheid.

This is very true, and in relation to business and wealth I agree it will take many years to correct. I also understand the desire to transform our sports teams to be more representative of the country as a whole. However, if you consider our soccer team, it is 90% black. Why does it not have the same problem as Rugby and Cricket? Well the answer is pretty obvious, lots of black people play soccer.

With regards to our other teams, we actually need players in order to change the teams, but this amounts to making people play the sport. Most of the blame at the moment comes down to the school level, as this is were the players will first emerge, but very few people of colour come from the school level into our top sports academies.

Anyway, my opinion is that the quotas should start earlier and our national sports teams should be left alone, it doesn't help making our Rugby team 50% black if 90% of the players are white.

With regards to E-sports, well I would say that the lack of black players is completely socio-economic. If black people got pcs and internet, they will start gaming. A lot of the competitive games don't need super PC's, but we need the cost of internet to go down, it's really really expensive here, and this lies in the hands of the government.

In general the problem in SA is that the government needs to give the people the possibilities to grow (be it education or cheap internet etc) as individuals rather than handing them a huge christmas gift from the get go, that in business often comes with responsibilities/tasks that they can't handle.

This doing nothing but destroying the competitive scene. Only those deserving a spot should have one, not because of your skin color. If most of the teams/players are white in a country with a rich diversity of ethnic backgrounds then something has gone wrong somewhere along the road. However, a quota system sounds just broken.

I could understand a sponsor opting for a black dude going into a tournament as the diversity might attract more interest to their product but that's just the sponsor doing a smart business decision.

Also let's make sure that in the next Olympic games the 100m sprint final and any other sport is equally representing the world's population. Shit like this is breaking competition. And since we are all so nice and friendly why not stop taking scores in competition.

Countries should be able to select the best possible athletes from their country regardless of colour.

However something that annoys me about football in the UK is the lack of British players in the top leagues, I think each team should have a quota of foreign players in the squad.

Not gonna happen: In team competitions everyone wants the best teammates instead of picking not as good ones for altruistic reasons, therefore it's unrealistic without a regulating body to force and enforce that policy.

if you want to put an end to a form of social inequality doing nothing and proclaiming everyone to be equal will manifest (and in some way hide) the inequality instead of putting an end to it. that's obvious, isn't it?

inquality does not go away by stating people are equal and a good (bad) example for this might just be the south african society (or maybe not, ask tbone). things don't change with a simple proclamation and never have. if you want to have change, you might just have to do something about it, if you like it or not.

I don't think forcing diversity constitutes equality though. Discrimination is still discrimination even if the intentions are good.

E-sports is a freaking competition. The entire idea of a competition is to find a state opposite of equality of result. The problem of quotas isn't just that they're rasistic and extremely impractical but they also contradict with the fundamental idea of the damn competition.

if the sporting insitutions themselves are racist then this has to be fought by the collective consciousness of reason, not enforcing another form of discrimination. discuss these matters, out the inherent racism and make those who support these ideas isolated. it's a much longer road but what counts is being successful though merit, not through a quota.

Two wrongs don't make a right. I hate the idea of fighting sexism with sexism or racism with racism. Also, on a practical point of view, this is terrible to reward talent (and grow competition).

I think the NBA does this. They require each team to roster at least one white guy.

German football used to have a rule about the maximum amount of foreign players that are allowed to play at the same time iirc. No joke but I don't think it still exists..

This is completely different to race and I think it should happen in all leagues. Look at the top teams in the UK and how many players are British! Countries should want to enforce quotas like these to establish a good national side in the long run.

That is quite common in soccer around the world, maybe even a FIFA rule.

That rule (and similar limits in other sports) can no longer exclude EU citizens, or those from various other countries that have agreements with the EU (eg South Africa).

Fighting game community have plenty of black dudes, also among top players. Eg Ryan Hart in Street Fighter and Perfect Legend in Mortal Kombat, among others
